Same as the KA, and you'd know that if you took a moment to research it.

My friend has done a few rebuilds
I'm 'mechanically inclined' but I wouldn't attempt it
hope you have access to a shop

I've only ever seen 1 rebuild kit and it was alittle over $5000! F that. I'd get an adapter kit and throw in a z32 tranny.

yeah I used to say this. I've collected about 4 of them so far, plus two in cars now. My friend has about 7 of them sitting, couple good, couple bad.

Problem is they are all 20 year old with unknown mileage. Lots have broken parts inside, all of them give trouble shifting 2nd except one of them that I know only have 50k miles and its in my dads car. Its really hit or miss with the used transmissions, and even the good ones tend to feel a little crotchety, grumpy old parts inside I figure. At just $250~ per trans rebuild rate, once you have the tools its not such a bad deal. And it looks like I can do a complete trans in a single day.

I'd rather buy the mazwork adapter plate for the ka and a z32 trans. To each his own though.
At the end of the day, you really didn't come out bad. 2 rebuilt trans for a grand, but the vast majority of your monies seem to have went to the tools to do the job. So, if you had to do another trans in the future, you'll already have the tools for the job.

We are building 5-10 of them actually. I wouldn't have bothered with just two. It got to a point where we are holding 10+ transmissions, and wondering "hmm which one should I try using next?", they are all equally as terrible. And keep in mind the 90 day return policy for harbor freight, you could potentially 'rent' the tools to do the job if you are ambitious. It took me a month but I am setup now where I can do a trans a day almost. The biggest surprise was that nobody ever mentioned the 2nd and 3rd synchro rings are identical in the SR transmission.... blew my mind, you'd think somewhere, somebody'd mentioned it at some point and I was just not paying attention.

Quite the old thread, but now i would not even bother with a z32 swap. A z33 swap is much better, the GB is fast AND stronger than Z32 ones, not to mention you will have a hard time finding a GWO z32 gearbox.

CA/SR/KA gearbox all suffers from the same design problem, gears can't hold the power, shafts flexes and make the gears go further away from each other, resulting in breaking them. 3rd is esp. prone to that, and is one of the most abused gear if not the most. The Z33 GB is a great answer to all these.

If you know how to drive it, even the old worn out 5-speeds will hold 400~rwhp for a long time (20 years). You just can't beat it up with twin plates and slicks, or shift really fast into 5th apparently. My only major complaint has always been 2nd gear, every 5-speed seems to give shit with second, I tend to find I am 'waiting' for the RPM to come down before it will slip in easily. I do not 'push' into 2nd when I am just driving slow, that is reserved for a real race :D

I am almost done playing with these anyways; next couple of years will bring the 4l60e and some more displacement to the table. I already put together one of those transmissions years ago, and I much prefer it to the manual trans.
