View Full Version : white smoke + brownish coolant + 180ish Compression + code 105 (egr/solenoid) = Rich?

S14 OBDI, just got it and it wasn't too well taken care off
-After being at a stoplight for a little bit, then i would go, sometimes i would get white smoke coming out, but after i go there's no more white smoke to be found
-I did a compression test and got about 180ish all across the board on a cold engine,
-I look at the coolant and it was brownish, I'm not sure if that's oil or if it's just really dirty, he mostly ran water w/no coolant in there
-I checked the oil and I'm not sure exactly how it should look, just heard 'milky/coffee like' but it seemed fine to me (unsure)?
-my ECU is throwing a code 105 which is the EGR and canister control valve (Solenoid) can this either be cleaned out or does it need to be replaced? where's it located or is it just the whole canister? or is it just throwing this code due to the typical cracked hoses?
I'm assuming my car..
-has a really dirty coolant system
-running rich due to EGR something something
I just want some second opinions on my problem

leakdown test!
drain your oil, drain your coolant, you'll know if theire intermixed...
the oil should not look chocolate milky, it should be Black and not thinned

If it just smokes after youve idled for a bit, it's probably the valve seals showing there age. My old S13 did that, till i replaced the valve seals.

^~~ Exactly what I was told. Mine does the same thing as yours does (S13-KA24DET). I think its just the valve seals. *a
If it was blueish white smoke or if it smokes every morning when you fire it up I would say valve seals. It might not be valve seals. My subaru would puff white smoke if it idled for a few minutes. I used a BG intake system cleaner and ran some fuel injector cleaner through it. Smoking seems to be gone. There is probably quite a bit of nasty carbon and oily sludge in your intake.
Also, good compression doesnt mean good head gasket. Head gaskets can blow many diff ways.
Oh yeah, ditch your egr if you can. That right there will fill your intake mani up with real nasty shizat

the valve is a charcol canister purge valve, i believe, it helps with emisions.
How does your emissions program work in Cali??? It's pretty easy to get by here in CT. Both my cars are catless. I put the stock one back in my 240 with and sr swap. Passed the sniffer test with flying colors. My WRX is catless with a cobb tuning ecu which turned off all the check engine lights. Anything 1996 or newer doesnt get sniffed. Its all plug and play with your OBD2 port. If you have a CEL on you fail. If there not on though you pass.

exactly what's happening
assuming that it's my valves/valve seals why does it smoke? (just want a better understanding/explanation) maybe they're dirty and can be cleaned? or is it something just worn that needs to actually be replaced?
as far as the code 105 (egr and charcoal canister valve (solenoid)
i researched and found a thread on nico saying it's located in the back of the head towards the intake side where a part of the engine harness plugs into...
how have you guys fixed your code 105 (only code i'm throwing other than the knock sensor)? does replacing the solenoid valve fix it or is it just a vacuum leak in somewhere causing the faulty solenoid
Valve seals are in the head around the vavles, all they do is seal oil from running down the valve stem and into the cylinder. They leak most when your car sits for a while. If it puffs smoke in the morning after its sat for the night, your valve seals are shot. When the seals first start to get bad it will only smoke for a few minutes and then clear out as the seals warm up and start to expand and actually seal.
