I need to get a new Catalytic converter for my 96 240sx. It is a California car and I want to know is there a difference between Cali and other states? I dont have like 800 bucks for a new one from Nissan (remember most 240 owners are broke) The reason I ask is because I can get a used one from someone but its from Florida but I dont know if it will still pass somg. Anyone know anything bout this?

Should pass fine, try it and see. Most states allow for a retest within 30 days.

first of all why do you need one? if you car destroyed the cat and you KNOW the car destroyed the cat the car will destroy the next one you get and you just wasted money. First you should test you cat to see if the honeycomb inside is damaged or all crumbled to pieces. I usually just bang the cats with a mallet and see if all is disintegrated inside. If you want to be more precise you can use a pyrometer and check the temp diffrences before and after the cat for temp diffrences. They should be around the same temp if not then its gone. You can't just assume it without testing it. Or if you failed smog the report can also tell you whats going on.

As far as diffences go they are the same. Cali 240's and outer state diffrences is usually the smog emission devices like egr.
Also why get a stock one for 800 when you can get a free flowing one like for instance from pdm-racing for 160?? does the same thing and prolly gives a little bit more flow.

No see the thing is my first cat crumbled because I had a greddy header. Now my car is stock. I had a muffler shop cut out the cat part on the downpipe and weld a new piece in. when they welded it, it was a lil crooked so now when it mates againts the test pipe its not flush and it leaks. I dont want it rewelded and I want a factory one. I was thinking someone that has done a SR swap might have and I can get it. But I want to see if there is a difference from Cali cars to other states. Anyone got one from a S14?? I apprieciate the help.

They should be around the same temp if not then its gone.

The temperature at the outlet side of the Cat. should be atleast 10% greater than the inlet temp. this is because there is a checmical reaction going on inside the Cat. and heat is created. Just to clarify not to be an asshole.

All S14s use the same converter, 95-98. There is no "OBD-II" version.

If this question is in reference to the post just above your own, no other answer is needed, Russ knows his S-Chassis shit better than anyone you will ever meet.

Damn, and to think, he lives in the same city as I.

Just take a look at your downpipe cat. Look to see if it's remotely decent. Then take a look at your second cat. Your car should pass if your motor is in stock and good shape. The only thing you need to look out for is high nox during the smog.

duely noted, i didn't read over what i had posted but thats basically what i was try to say but thanks for the clarification.

BTW i used an s13 cat for smog on my 95 s14 and passed smog. It really doesn't matter as long as its doing its job, your engine is combusting right and you dont have a mil lamp on. You should be good.
