Got a s13 redtop w/ trans, came with a rare earth magnet plug, and short shifter,
tranny shifts smooth, however makes a horrible rattling/crackling sound like somethings bouncin around in the gears at higher rpms,
the car also makes whir whir whiring at idle, when i press the clutch in it goes away, however when i rev it up to 7000rpms with the clutch in, the noise is loud and crackly
like i said, no trouble shifting, just have noises all the time, decellerating, accelerating, etc.. the TOB was in good cond and the pilot bushing was replaced, i highly doubt it to be the TOB because of my description above.
what could it be?

internal bearing failure
I have the same but with no rattling/cracking sound. Just a whine.
If you repair it now, will just cost you some bearings, if you wait until later, you will need a tranny or more expensive rebuild.
Nowadays there tons of SR and KA trannys around, get one, swap bellhousings and you are done.

When the crackling sounds is heard, it usually mean that the bearings are already toasted.
Anyway, check and even better change the oil to a heavier GL4 (not GL5 or GL6) weight.
also a common thing would be (i know this sounds like a long shot) but the pilot bearing in the crankshaft end has caused 2 peoples that i know personally's SR's to make horrendous sounds, 1 was just worn out and bit up, while the other kid had gotten an auto motor (having the auto pilot bearing) paired with a manual trans (paired from japan)
the pilot bearign is a 1 dollar part, its basically a chunk of tube... so its not expensive, check with a local nissan dealer if that is the case

could it just be your Shifter rattling at the high Rpm? Do you try holding it firm when the noise starts?

DONT BUY a input shaft bearing without checking the tranny!!!!
Lower it and remove the front cover on the bellhousing.
