View Full Version : Falken ZE-512 in rear....hydroplaning?
Got Sileighty?

a week ago i noticed that my rear tires were really bald, so i decided to replace them. i had falken fk-451s all around, for about 1.5 years....before that, i had st-115s all around, which only lasted me about a year.....so i decided to replace JUST THE REARS this time (since the fronts were still fine) with the ZE-512s, since they claim a higher tread life....so basically i have fk-451s in the front with about 50-60% tread, and brand new ze-512s in the rear.
immediately, i noticed a difference in the way my car drives. going straight (50mph +), it feels like my car is "hydroplaning" at times even though the roads are dry. another weird thing is i have to put a little bit more strength in changing lanes too, like the car is refusing to turn. anyone else have any similar experiences?
maybe its not even the tires, could it be suspension related?

Sounds Dangerous.

Sounds suspension/alignment related. When was the last time you had a proper alignment done and what kind of suspension mods do you have?

check tire pressure. Hydroplane effect may come from over inflated tires.

never had alignment done though....
Get an alignment, then see if it persists.
It's not like 451's and 512's are THAT big of a difference....451s aren't Hoosiers ;)

maybe the sidewalls of the 512 are softer and you aren;t use to the extra roll.
your not suposed to mix used tyires with brand new ones right i could be wrong. i read somewhere if you do that you should put the used ones on the back and the ones with more grip on the front. but i dont know.

Sounds like your tire pressure is horribly off.
If that doesn't fix it, then your alignment is wrong.

sounds like you messed up 2 years ago by installing any suspension part and NOT getting a proper alignment.
You said your tires wore too fast.... THAT EQUALS bad alignment. I'd start with the allignment, and when your there tell the tech to check out your suspension for loose/damaged/worn parts.

ST115 lasting ONLY a year? thats pretty damn good. nobody should really be complaining if their tires last them more than a year.
but yeah get an alignment and check psi.

Ziexs shouldnt be hydroplaning unless you're going like over 100 mph in the rain, and even then it's hard. I ran 512s on my car for the longest time and I was able to hit 95 easy during a storm, no hydroplaning.

what is hydroplaning? i assume it is some kind of unstable "floating"... maybe the reason is u are mixing tires? im just guessing
anyways, i really dun recommend hard driving on ze512, they are good as a tire upgrade from stocky and all seasons (unbeatable price tho), but if u try to hard cornering with them, u better be prepared for kissing a tree/curb/pole. i know i sux but it happen on me once and luckily my brakes saved me...i wasnt even trying to hard drive, i was just rushing to school and turn too hard in an intersection, car understeering without even changing direction, estimate speed was 50...nuff said
and for freeway, i had no problem on any speed with these tires, very durable tires i would say, (i have negative rear camber for 10 months already)

^^omg...call your life line bro. why waste a post on guessing what hydroplaning is? I've toasted about 5 sets of 512's. It is NOT the tire.
Fact: You run bald tires, you have no tread block movement.(this is why we shave tires in the performance world)
Fact: Switching from worn tires to new low performance tires WILL give you the feeling of the Jello Wiggle.
Fact: You need to be slapped for never getting an alignment. Just think of all of the fuel economy and tire wear you lost over the years!!! :duh:
Good luck!!!

The 512 are directional tires. Make sure they are on correctly.

cool, ill check the pressure tomorrow morning. hopefully that will fix the problem. iirc, it should be around 30-32psi when cold, right?
yea i should be slapped for not doin alignment 2 yrs ago. it was just something that i kept putting off, until 2yrs later, and i still havent gotten around to it.

Stock is 28 psi IIRC. Check in glovebox for correct value.

i use to have those tires at the rear and hadn't experience any bad handling issues. maybe it's because those tires are directional, that may be why you're having that kind of experience.

an alignment is like $70 and tires cost more than that a piece. do the alignment.
