View Full Version : Mounting FMIC

I am getting ready to purchace a FMIC but I am looking for ways to mount w/o cutting my bumper. Since the clutch fan is removed how feasible is it to push back the radiator and mount the IC infront of it. I also have heard of a top mount IC kit for the s13 from Railworks does anyone have pics of it. Opinons are welcome and pics of different mounting locations would be great

I ahve seen the fmic mounted infront of the radiator before. looked pretty sweet and mad the IC piping much shorter. As long as your in an area where there isn't too much heat you should be fine. just put a couple 12" fans on the radiator.

I was contemplating the problem w/ the FMIC being in the engine bay as opposed to being in the bumper. I probally shouldn't fight common knowledge and just do it the way most others do and the custom piping could be a PITA

Is it really that much of a bitch to fit in the bumper? Or is there a special procedure that Im missing?

I have to admit i like the TMIC but wouldnt it cause some problems like as over heating? Since its on top of the engine and u wouldnt get enough cool air... I mite be wrong but i see that if u wanna be a sleeper and surprose ppl with it. I saw one 180sx wid that style of TMIC.... it was pretty fast

to me it seems like the top mount would have clearance issues with the hood.

Ok 2 issues with intercoolers:
1. Good one - they cool air.
2. Bad one - they slow down the flow
Best intercooler - the one that does both the best for the car
Ok i'm kinda lost after nrcooled's second post on which intercooler is which, but i hope u get the point....
FMIC (the one in front of the radiator) - best cooling (we are talking air/air ics here), bad flow (lotsa bends and piping)
TMIC (the one on top like in the pic) - worse cooling (inside the engine bay + lack of cooling air flow), better flow of air inside(less piping)
Judging by what the book says, putting the IC behind the radiator would be the worst of the three setups since
a. You get warm air from the radiator to cool you down (therefore worse cooling than FMIC, but about the same as TMIC)
b. You still have alot of piping (not much better than FMIC, but worse than TMIC)
So i don't really see the reason for that, plus it wouldn't look as cool as FMIC(unless you want a sleeper.... but with you n1 duals ). So anyways, you are free to choose but i think FMIC is the best to go with.
edit: blah, me and my gay reading skils..... anyways, it would be cool i guess. As long as it's in front of the radiator

If you guys want that much of a sleeper, then paint the FMIC black. If you have a black car it will blen in nice, but the car is a slwwper by just lookign at it. Most people when they see an S13, won't think its that fast. Asl long as your car looks clean and you like it, then its all good.

To SR20fastback:
Kind of. after you remove the outer body work you have to cut away the actual bumper or brace (or whatever it's called )
To Kreator:
Yeah I wanted to push back the radiator and put the IC in front of it
To KidDyno:
I am just looking for options and thanks very much for that pic. I had never seen one before just heard of it
Anyway my problem is right now that my car is slow as fuck when its hot out. When the weather is cool she runs like a branded pig (fast for all you non-country folks) The SMIC sucks phaty pole. And after seeing civickillas numbers I have got to get one. But a grand is a lot of money and I am looking for cheaper options
1. Get the greddy or blitz and suck it up
2. Get the spearco and hope it works well
3. Buy a used FMIC off ebay...then realize I'm an idiot
4. Keep the SMIC and continue to be slow on HOT days
5. Wait for fall
I have a date w/ a 5.0 Stang and a '71 Mach 1 (I think its a '71...beautiful car though) and would like to finish my car soon

I got that lame joke it made me laugh my ass off

ok 4 and 5 are definately bad
i don't like the 3rd one either but it's ok (after all i'll prolly be getting a catback from ebay )
1 is the best but too damn expensive
2 is the one that prolly will work out.... u need to go to muffler shops and ask them how much will it run you to get pipin. And try to find someone who can do it mandrel bent and see how much they'll charge....

A few things:
1. What is more the issue - cutting the bumper support or money?
2. I know there are a few kits out there that do not require cutting or removal of the core support. I think Greddy (not the Skyline core) for the Silvia fits w/o cutting or shaving. The Silvia cores are plenty big for moderate boost levels - the LM and other biggies are excess capacity and may hurt more than they help w/ a t25 at 14 psi.
3. What about finding someone w/ kit for the KA (Nsport or Fmax)? Those come w/ smallish I/C's that are likely plenty for 14 psi on a t25. Plus, they are small and come with piping that should only require minor alteration to fit. You could probably find one for pretty cheap (from a guy who upgraded), they fit perfectly (I helped w/ uuninja's), and it looks like a well made piece.

Hey Hippo,
goodlooking out on the suggestion. I haven't even looked at those. I am in the process of e-mailing them to get this all together.
