I've seen the welds themselves break apart on two different occasions, if thats what you mean. But I have never seen the diff itself break

I wouldn't be surprised if it was "poorly welded"

Yea if your looking to get a diff that wont break then contact us. we have done over 200 of them now.

I have seen poorly welded diffs come apart and it is not good.

Why do you ask?

Luke- i was hoping to hear from you in this thread! I've heard nothing but great stuff about your work.

HOWEVER, i am getting two of my diffs welded by my autoshop teacher's FRIEND. Its more of a favor for a favor thing. The guy is a professional welder and my shop teacher trusts him. My only worries is that this guy has only welded larger ford and chevy rearends.

I was mainly wondering how easy it is to do the diff wrong, and what happens if the welds break. I'm assuming a piece of metal COULD get in the pinion gear and sieze the rear...right? scary... It seems like no-one has even heard or seen such a thing though.

I think the fact that my diffs(corolla and 240) are smaller and will see MUCH MORE ABUSE than a circle track car, i started to worry a lil bit, as they will be DAILY DRIVEN. Basically i'm just paranoid because i worry about a broken diff on a turn. That would be bad news.

So, with that said, does anyone have a pic of what a properly welded diff SHOULD look like? I'm sure this guy is using the right materials and proper settings, just making sure its welded enough and in the right spots.(and NO this is not going to be used to take anyones buisness away. It will just help reasure me, and maybe help someone else stay safe.)

just weld the shit out of it. if the spider gears look like a blob at every visible point, then it wont break.

I have seen a ton of diffs come apart and lock up the rear end, and even shoot shit out the back of the diff cover.

Be very careful if you weld it yourself, most of the ones i see that are welded by people, come apart.

Ive seen good welds go to shit on slicks. It was gnarly and left bits and pieces on the track scraping a Nismo R&P

I know of two people who have blown diffs, and they were done by friends and such.

The first one lodged inbetween the ring and pinion when he was on the freeway.

The second one just broke and left the car stranded.

I suggest spending the $100 or whatever for Lukes diff, due to the fact that you know it won't break.

Who knows, it could be cheaper in the long run. Being as how we hope the teachers welds don't break and damage more that $100 worth of stuff, eh?

Oh yeah, and the second guy who's no name welded diff broke purchaced one from Luke afterwards and has had no trouble since.

hey Luke, i saw your sig and read all about your welded diffs. sounds awesome and i might be interested, but not until spring.

i just have a few questions if you don't mind answering them and maybet these could sway other future customers in looking into your product.

1) what is the real difference in welded and say a 2way NISMO clutch type.
it probably feels the same, but there must be some sort of difference, or everyone would get welded diffs.

2) ive read a lot of people saying they go thru tires like crazy, and was wondering what would help the deterioriation of tires slow down.

3) any settings that would be advised if i got a welded diff from you? like alignment settings. i am driving a 95 s14. i would be drifting my car if that makes things a bit different.

hopefully i can really understand the differences and it might be swayed into getting an open diff welded in the spring (i live in canada so we have some bad winters from time to time)

thanks in advance!!

well guys, sorry to say, but luke isn't the ONLY person on the planet who can weld a diff. I'm sure his diffs are top notch, but i dont have the time and or money to ship a heavy ass diff up north.

Now i'm basically just asking for anyone with a pic of a properly welded diff. Seems to be a secret around here though.

I have heard of some diffs giving out. None of mine have shown any problems, stress cracks etc. I would say, just make sure the diff is very clean in the first place, and have someone with a good mig, and some experance, and alot of heavy points. you could even through some stock you have laying around in there for structure, if your really worried.
