View Full Version : Rear brake caliper rebuild?

Well I replaced my pads and rotors and while doing so discovered my rear calipers to be leaking. That would explain my crappy pedal feel lately. When pushing in the piston fluid started coming out.

I've rebuilt front calipers and MC's before but never a rear caliper with an e-brake. I don't want to spend the 70 plus core for new calipers if I can just replace the seals and be fine. I found some kits for the seals at parts stores but I would like some insight from someone that has done it before as to which seals are replaced and what can be left alone. Like is there a seal back in the e-brake part of the caliper? Or is it just the dust seal and the piston seal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :wavey:

Oh, and if I go through with it, expect pictures!!! :eek3d:

unscrew piston, clean the crap out of it, replace the seal/dust boot. Also dont forget to use new grease, the rebuilt kit should come with some. I only have a picture of them fully rebuilt, not much help but nice to look at =]

:werd: Looks like I'm going that route then. Hopefully I don't break them more in the process. lol

I am interested in hearing how things work out. Please keep us posted as to the result. I have been looking into some calipers on Ebay and I am worried that I might have to replace seals. Where did you get the kit from?

I just ordered a seal kit from Advanced online. I should get them on Mon. or Tue. I'll take some pics and hopefully be able to post them.

I recommend a new unit because the stock caliper is prone to pitted piston. You can rebuild the seals, but you also need to check out the piston.

Nissan rear calipers aren't very good. I say replace both rear calipers with new one.

that would be very expensive. and all teh "new" calipers at the parts stores are just sand-blasted and rebuilt

How do you rebuild a pitted piston?

Also, new OEM parts from the dealer are preferred. If you want to save money, a rebuilt caliper will be inspected for piston pitting.

In industry terminology, "new" means it's a completely new unit and has never been used before. "Rebuilt" means what you said. I am using industry-standard terminology according to the auto repair industry.

Please do not be cheap on brakes because your life as well as everybody else's lives depend on them.

I know you're being helpful and thank you for trying, but please pay attention to what you say as well.
