Ok, so i got a RB20DET motorset from venus auto. When it got here i gave it the old once over, and everything looked ok besides a little bit of oil leaking from the Valve cover gaskets. So i deceided to give her an oil change before i put her in. Upon inspection of the Oil pan, i saw there was a huge dent on the bottom. No worries "ill just remove the oil pan inpect the oil pick up and hammer the dent out". Well i removed the drain plug and normal black oil was flowing out of it. When i dropped the pan i looked in and saw a thin layer of mixed oil and water. And right above that layer was a good amount of water. At this point i had steam comming out of my ears. Im not sure if any of you have had this problem before. Ive seen blown head gaskets, but when the head gasket blows usually most of the oil gets mixed. But in my dilema, only a small amount was mixed, and none of it came out of the pan while i was draining it. Im hoppin that water somehow found its way into the pan while it was sitting in the junk yard, aand kinda mixed around while it was being shipped. Well im gonna compression test and leak down test it on sunday. I hope all is well!!!!!!!

Called them up, they said that they can either send me money to fix it, or exchange it for a new one (But i have to pay for shipping). Yea so im probably gonna fix it. What have you guys spent on machine shop costs. I need to give them an estimate so that they could send me the cash.

I'd get another one. Coolant and bearings don't play well together.

I looked at the crank and rods and there was no trace of rust. Thats the thing, it wasnt coolant it was water. It may have just snuck in through the dipstick or something.

machine shop? expect AT LEAST 500 bucks minimum
thats assuming u know how to assemble the engine yourself (pistons etc etc) and have the right tools

Well ronalds pretty koo bout shiet like this. Find out how much shipping is and just get another engine. But before you decide to do that, open up the head and inspect the current engine you have. Ive had a friend who bought a RB20 from Venus and turned out the engine was built. Im talking, internally swapped with RB25/26 components bumping it to a 2.4, fully ported/polished head with some HKS cams on it. You might get lucky and have something in there. If its a head gasket, just have ronald send you money back and slap in some aftermarket headgasket. Perfect time for you to learn your engine, if you dont learn now, you will never learn to work on it later.

hmmm. WHY THE FUCK would you buy SIX engines from somone who keeps giving you bad ones?
Makes no sence to me... wheres the logic?

Changing the haedgasket is not that bad, I just had to do it but I got the machine-work at a friend of a friends shop. He charged me $350 to resurface the head and block then after that I spent about $250 on metal headgaket and ARP studs plus another $200 on misc gaskets/bolts/fuck-ups. So in total I spent about $800 plus all the tools I had to buy that I didn't have.
So ballpark around $800-900 to fix the engine you have or you can send it back and still have to pay a couple hundered (im guessing) to send the engine back. And remeber that more than likely they won't be giving you all the money to fix it. I was in the same situation 3 months ago as you are right now

Yea it sucks! I ordered all of the gaskets that im gonna need. Im wondering if im gonna need to get the block resurfaced also. Ill check it the decide on it when its open. I also ordered a greddy timing chain w/ tensioner, Might as well huh.
