View Full Version : Our cars vs. 98' GTI-VR6
Tyler Durdan

I have a buddy who is very close to picking up a 98' VW GTI-VR6 hatchback, and I am starting to get a little worried. My 97' 240 is pretty much stock minus injen intake (pretty much a nice noise maker), and my best friend is probably getting this car. My crowd of friends always joke around with who can take who, and as of now, I'm on top. My question is how is the vw gonna match up in all forms...i.e. handling, straight race, and so on.
Please don't start ripping about street racing, cuz we rarely do this, if ever . Just want to know some of your guys' thoughts....

lol anyways... Im not too sure about any #'s for this car, just that the VR6 has a nice power band compared to the turbo version. Although I think it puts out less peak hp. I say just give it a go, if for some reason you lose...time for a turbo kit

Shut the fuck up...I asked for answers, not for a dipshit response.
Some quick numbers on the vr6:
172 bhp w/ 173 llbs. of torque
Weight: 2800 llbs
5spd with supposedly damn good powerband.

With the right skills, you should be able to take the GTI on handling pretty easily. I looked into this a long time ago... being that I was really into VWs, and it seems that some enthusiasts actually buy the 1.8t instead of the VR6 because the Vr6 is so damn heavy. Basically, it puts a lot of weight on the front end of the car and kind of screws up handling... or so I've heard.
In a straight line, I think it would depend on the situation. Vr6's are pretty damn strong, even in stock form. However, I think it would depend on the distance you guys would race in. Off the line, you should be able to overtake him, but he would gradually catch up. In other words, in a short distance race, (maybe a block) I think you might be able to take him. On the freeway, he owns you though.

VW's do have a "unique" look about them.. they will walk you in the straight line.. be glad it isn't a 1.8t they get ~50hp just buy upgrading the ecu.. you might have him in corners.. but they have quite a bit of aftermarket suspension parts and can be made to handle very well. If I bought a NEW car.. it very likely would be a 1.8t Golf.. (cause I looove turo cars..)
Hey nitekids, here's an idea: STFU since you obviously don't know anything about VWs.... or Nissan 240s, or apparently any other cars at all.
VWs are good cars, and the VR6 is a pretty well respected engine in all respects; especially the new 24v that's coming out for the 2002 or '03 models. The old 12v (?) VR6s are still strong though. the '98 makes it a MKIII vw, not the newer body styled MkIVs.
In a straight line, my money has to be on the VR6, but in the twisties you will whoop him. Golfs (and VWs in general) don't handle well AT ALL out of the box. With some suspension mods though, he could be on your tail quite easily though.
Just for the record, I frequently drive a MkIV GTi 1.8T, and yes, they do get at least 40hp off the bat with a chip (ECU upgrade; depends which manu. you get it from) -- The GTi I drive has a chip, and I will vouch for the seat-of-the-pants acceleration. What makes the 1.8T and VR6 so great though is not so much the HP as the TORQUE. these are two very, VERY torquey engines. If anyone cares to find out for themselves, I'd love to take you for a ride in my GTi. So Cal only, and not Nitekids since he thinks my car is shit.

in agreeance with the VR-6 being faster in a straight. these are really nice cars all around, he'll prolly get leather and all power options and being FWD he can drive all year round.
it'll be close, but in the end you'll still be the one with a 240

Thanks a lot for the info. guys....as for nitekids....TOLD...you little punkass.
I thought the vr6 would take me in a straight run, but the handling I believed I would own him. The one he's looking at is pretty damn nice...black on black leather; power everything, and just a real clean car. Still wouldn't give up the 240 for one though.

since you guys are talking about vw's i thought i'll butt in with my first post. you'll probably say im a newbie but i've been going on this board ever since september of last year and have read almost everything.
back to the subject a couple of questions. doesnt the 1.8 turbo beatle have the same engine as the turbo golf? i've had a lot of experience with this beatle since my girlfriend drives one and i get a kick out of it everytime i hear the turbo spools. but its automatic tho. and sometimes when were driving im in my car an 89 coupe and she's in hers, off the line she keeps up with me but never never beats me tho. and i know i should really talk to her about driving more safely on the road since shes in a leased beatle and she is a she.
second question what do you guys think about the vw corrado? if anyone here knows wat a corrado is tell me if you like or not thats all.

From what I have read in C&D the VR6 is soft in the corners because it is setup for their target demographic late twenties early thirties yuppies (no offence to those in that demographic ) Anyway the aftermarket is strong and they can be made to handle like a beast (i.e. civic hatchback) but out the box they are set up for ride quality and smoothness not hard cornering. but they are fast. I was playing w/ one by my house and he had some grunt but then I down shifted . They are nice cars so don't sleep but the handles need help

Yes, I agree with everyone here except nitekids. The GTi will be quicker in straight line, but don't underestimate their handling either because I have driven several and they are very tight. I haven't driven a 240 yet, but the turning radius on the Golf/GTi is insane! You could literally put the car in a little room and it would turn in circles.
And another thing, VW's are damn tough cars! My father's friend has a Golf with 500,000 km on it and he has NEVER done ANY engine work other then oil changes. The thing still runs strong.
In terms of Corrado's, they are stock supercharged 158 hp I believe. If you are considering one, I would strongly recommend that you check the G-Ladder (Supercharger) to see if it is in good order, because I think they blow easily without proper maintanence.

Straight line, you will get beaten hardcore. I took one, going uphill, it was a clean 92 golf with a vr6 in it (could tell when he took off that I was sunk) had him through 2 gears thanks to a good launch , but in 3rd he pulled on me easy, it was an uphill climb a little, and we shutdown pretty quick (bout 75-80 miles an hour, cause I knew I had been beaten and no point in being stupid) but yah, straight line it will beat you pretty easy even if you launch like a god.

BTW The grille on that red Vento (Jetta) is a damn rare piece, I want it for my car, which has a Jetta front end swapped on...
Back to the subject at hand; my GTI is light years faster than my SOHC 240SX. The 12v VR6 has a very broad torque curve and the gearing to take advantage of it. In stock form they usually put around 150-155hp to the wheels. A chip and a good exhaust like the Techtonics 2.5" do wonders. They can be spendy to modify sometimes, though.
The 240SX has a natural advantage in the corners being lower, lighter, and better balanced. Remember that the GTI VR6 is at its heart just a Golf economy car chassis. A well refined and luxurious one, still. That's why my GTI is the daily driver - the S13 can't compare in terms of comfort.

Just a question, because I see the same kind of responses in every post that is put up comparing the 240sx to any other car. No matter whether it is a VW or a Honda, people in the forum never seem to have any confidence in the 240sx in a drag. It's always the 240 is slower in a straight line, but it would own the (insert car name here) in handling. The 240 is more than simply a handling car. I used to own a VW Golf, so I know of the car's potential, but the GTI stock, will not own the 240. I have seen GTI's get walked down by stock SOHC neons. I ran down a Nitrous injected GTI on the way to work one morning, and he ran so much damn boost he fried the engine, and had to pull over to let it cool down and reset. Not to mention, you guys are talking about a GTI (a stock performance Golf) versus a stock 240, to make it even why don't you run a full fledged silvia next to that GTI and see what happens. I don't get it really, this is supposed to be a Silvia/240/300z forum. Don't you guys stand by your cars? I mean it's hard to tell in a theoretical race who would win, there are too many factors involved that could change it all. Regardless of that you guys should have some kind of faith and pride in your cars.......240's can do more than just handle......

Griffon, I stand by my cars - both of them (see sig)
The GTI VR6 is faster than the 240SX in a straight line. This is not a hard concept to understand. Look at power to weight ratios, torque to weight ratios. It's a 2800lb car with a 172hp 2.8L six. It's faster. BFD. Does it hurt to hear me say that? I own both cars and I know full well what they're capable of.
If you saw a GTI lose a race to a single cam Neon, then the GTI was NOT A VR6. Some GTI's come with a 115hp 2.0 four cylinder. This thread is specifically about the VR6, not the "2.slow". It's also specifically about the 240SX, not the "full fledged Silvia". Edit: I used to own a Neon too, and mine was a DOHC with the close ratio 5 speed. It was also slower than my GTI. Street racing is lame and I won't even touch on that argument, except to say I once heard someone on a forum say that Porsche 968's suck because he beat one in a rental Ford Tempo . I know plenty of people running nitrous and forced induction in their VWs without issues, and I've seen poorly tuned 240SXs put holes in pistons. So what? It just means some people don't know what they're doing.
Part of truly respecting your car is knowing its limitations. Part of being a real car guy is respecting the competition.

second question what do you guys think about the vw corrado? if anyone here knows wat a corrado is tell me if you like or not thats all.

Yes an no, the 1.8T beetle does have the same engine... essentially. However they have subtle differences (vacuum hoses in different places, missing one or two sensors, etc) and beetle 1.8Ts put out marginally less hp/tq. This is due to the space constraints of the Beetle engine bay; if you've ever seen one, it's TINY. The only Beetle with exactly the same engine as the Golf/Jetta 1.8Ts is the new Beetle Turbo S w/ a 6speed transmission mated to the G/J 180hp 1.8T engine. Note however, that the VW 1.8T engines have a *tiny* kkk k03 turbo which is fully spooled by ~3500 rpm and has very little high end. It is a very good daily driver due to the gobs and gobs of torque/hp down low.
Just a side note, but any VW will outsurvive our cars in any type of accident... especially the beetle. Worry about your g/f's driving, but don't worry too much. I've seen TTs (same chassis as beetle) that've been in 50mph frontal impacts with no damage done to the engine; only radiator and battery along w/ some exterior (bumper, hood, fenders,) but no serious structural damage.
VW Corrado? an absolutely beautiful car. Love it. The corrado ('89 - 93 or thereabouts) came in two forms: 1.6l Supercharged G60 or 2.8l VR6. Both engines have their strong points, and can be paralleled to today's 1.8T vs. 2.8l VR6.
If I could only own one VW, it'd be a Corrado G60. The only 'drawback' is the front engine, front wheel drive layout.

Hey Nitekids do you remember that Volkswagen is also the same company as Porsche and Audi?? Both of which are unbelievably respected car companies. Id take a 2000 Audo S4 over my 1990 Fastback, or even a 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo. Just because you think Volkswagens are ugly, doesnt mean that they arent good cars. They still have very good engineering, and can hold their own as for reliability and even speed. I dont know what you're deep passionate hate for VW's are, but no one gives a flying fuck what you think about them, so quit post whoring

Ok, I have seen a couple responses in here and i want to clear up a couple of things.
1) The GTI, the Golf VR6, and the Golf 1.8T are three different cars, and three different engines.
2)Just going by weight and power "figures" does not cut it. You guys should actually pit the two vechicles against each other to get results.
3)Volkswagen's stock turbos add little more than 50 hp to a 90 hp car. That gives it 140 bhp to the 155 bhp in a 240sx. Yes it is possible to make your GTI or VR6 or 1.8T somewhere around 200 hp, but it DOES NOT COME OUT OF THE BOX THAT WAY.
4)Like I said before this is a hypothetical ass question, there are two many factors that could change the outcome of the match. There is no way to "theoretically" say who would win.
Which leads me to....
5) The only real way to figure this out would be in a race, street or on the track. Some of you don't "like" street racing. That's fine, but in a real street race I have taken GTI's and VR6's alike. I am not doubting their potential, and I agree the numbers point their way in some cases, but it reality, when putting rubber to gravel, my 240 held it own, as it does against civics, celicas, mustangs, preludes, and eclipses. And before you critcize my results b/c they were ascertained through street racing, let me tell you something. On a clear street, with nothing except you, the other driver and the traffic light, there is no major difference from the track. You can have your numbers, in a street 1/4, the 240 can hold its own. Of course as always, the race is determined by the skill of the driver.

1) Funny, the back of my car says "GTI VR6" on it. As do the backs of many of my friends' cars (at least before they debadged them). Do 5 minutes of research on Edmunds.com or the like before making a statement like that. The VR6 and 1.8t have both been available in GTIs. The Golf VR6 is a European model, not sold in the US. The Golf 1.8t was identical to the GTI 1.8t, except it was a 4-door; it was discontinued as of the 2002 model year.
2) I have done so. I own both, remember?
3) The 1.8t produces 150hp at a minimum. As of 2002 the 150hp version has been dropped entirely in favor of a 180hp version. There is also a 225hp version in the Audi TT. It is not a 90hp engine with a 60-135hp turbo, it is a 150-225hp turbo engine. Also as of 2002, the GTI VR6 has been upgraded to 200hp via a new 24-valve head. So, yes, they DO come out of the box that way. One last thing, my 240SX has 140hp. KA24E's do exist, you know.
4) I totally agree. A DOHC 240SX has a chance against a '98 GTI VR6, if these factors align against the VR6. Give both cars equal footing and the VR6 wins.
5) Fine. If anyone wants to meet me on the strip against my VR6 they can be my guest. I don't enjoy drag racing but If it'd end this god forsaken thread...

Alright guys, I know i am new to this board, but i have been observing for quite some time and not only is it on this board but every other 240 board as well. Everyone always wants to know how the 240 will do against every other car under the sun. IMO... just race... whats the worst that can happen, you lose? Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and take it as a learning experiance maybe you have to become a better driver maybe that other guy is an amazing driver and his car has a turbo, big deal. Just have fun with your 240...you can talk all day trying to predict what will happen but there are too many factors that come into play so all of that doesnt matter...when you actually race then you will find your answer, not pointlessly argueing about it before.

98 GTi VR6... which is the MK3 , they are very fast ... even faster than the Mk4 VR6. In stock form, we will eat dust no matter what. However, in handling, we are better since the VR6 is a FF car and the V6 engine is little heavy. A well modded (header, intake, ECU, exhaust, cams) VR6 can kill a ITR or a chipped 1.8T. And of cuz if we could pass a ITR or 200Gti, there is no way we can beat a MK3 VR6.
Anyways, I like golf , especially the 1.8T, too bad they don't have 4motion.
