Hi all -
My name is Dan and I'm from SF Bay Area, California. I recently bought a 95 240SX S14 as a project car and have been lurking this forum for the past few weeks. The forum has been helpful to me on both understanding the 240 as well as providing me direction on where I want to go with my project.
Previously I've owned 2x FD RX-7's, a MKIV Supra TT, a MKII MR2 Turbo. Each of those cars were unique but something about them always left me unsatisfied. These are just my opinions so no flames intended. The RX-7 projects were wonderful. Handles on rails and power to boot. I had great times carving up twisties but there was always that constant worry that an apex seal would go out on me (even with TONS of fuel and proper tuning). After going through 3x 13B-REW's and all sorts of electrical and cooling system nightmares I ended up getting fed up with reliability so I no longer own one. The MKIV Supra was a monster in terms of horsepower and reliability but ultimately the car was way too heavy and as docile feeling as a Lexus to really enjoy driving in anything other than a straight line. As for the MR2, it was a great car - reliable, agile, and decently powerful, but overall I found it boring to drive. The only time it would pump up my adrenaline came from spinning out because I kept pushing the envelope trying to get my adrenaline rush. It seemed to me like the MR2 only had 2 modes and a thin grey line inbetween - extremely docile and out of control. I also own a E46 328 as my current daily driver.
I was drawn to the S14 because it has potential to handle like a FD as well as have the power to match that of any of the 3 cars. I'm also convinced the SR20DET (what I intend on swapping) is every bit as reliable as the 3S-GTE and 2JZ-GTE.
I'm a firm believer that proper handling is twice as important as straight line performance. So for starters, I've already ordered F+R Whiteline swaybars, Apex'i N1 (not the WS's) coilovers, and F+R STBs. Eventually I'll get around to a full cusco cage, all cusco control arms, the 300z big brakes, and a kick-ass track/street alignment from C2 Automotive (they have incredible knowledge about suspension setup and alignment) in Oakland. When I'm finally satisfied with the suspension and brakes, I plan on doing an SR20DET swap and tuning that up to a maximum 300whp.
I'm also looking for more people to take NASA driving school classes w/ me at Sears Pt. Raceway. So if anyone is interested, please let me know.
Sorry for the long introduction.
Nice to meet you all.
