View Full Version : Am I driving a Coffin?

My 240's frame has been getting rustier and rustier over the years, under the driver's side. I checked it, there is now a HUGE hold, I'd say about 5-10 inches in the frame itsel under my seat. The other side is clean and solid.
Am I driving myself into the grave if I continue to drive this? could it just "let out" on me all of the sudden or is it no as simple as that? (ie, other parts of the car other than that frame holding the car together)
Thanks :duh:

Well for one, we talk about frame rails on our cars but the reality of it those frame rails are actual integral parts of the unibody. Technically our cars do not have frames in the standard sense. The unibody is the frame i.e. much like a exoskeleton. Given that the amount of rust and size of the area your talking about would effect structural integrity. If it was mine I would toss it and find another chassis.

DRIFTFREAQ speaks words of truth and wisdom!!!
Our cars DONT HAVE FRAMES. Although i kinda doubt your car will just "give out", your car is now more prone to twisting and is most likely less structurally(sp) sound in case of impact.

It's not the "Dragula",

but I'd suggest talking to some local shops about getting it repaired. It's tough to say how much it would cost since we don't live in your area. Talk to a shop, they can give you a good estimate.

it cost me 125$ to have both of my frame rails cut out and new pieces welded in on my s13, its worth it for the peace of mind

shouldnt be more than a couple hundred bucks to have someone (a shop or a friend) weld some fresh metal in there. its def worth it since 240s are probably rather scarce in your area as well as in mine (upstate NY)
for some of us buying a clean shell (in our own state) is poopy doo doo :(

i paid 300$. I bought the car with a 1" spot of rust in the frame. I sold it, bought it back a year and a half later. I was picking at the rust and literally 2 feet of frame disintergrated in my hands. I took it to a guy my uncle deals to and he cut it clean and welded in a plate for 300$. I was taking off ramps at 90mph. Didnt do any damage and i dont know if you can feel the car twist but i sure as hell didnt.
