ive been planning on installing my exhaust system myself, since i dont have the 80 dollars an hour to spend to ge tit installed, i was wondering how difficult it would be, and what kind of tools would i need. i have a 91 240 and i am planing on getting the HKS Hiper exhaust, your help would be apreciated, does anyone know of an install guide for exhaust?

Well IF it is the same sizes as the Silvia (I know it is slose) then you will need a 12mm wrench or ratchet and a 14mm ratchet wrench or both since it can some times be difficult setting the ratchet onto the bolt with out an extension. You will need an extension. I would prefer you did this using jackstands or the drive up ramps. To ensure your safety. I would hope that HKS would provide you with all the little things like gaskets and new bolts and nuts. A helper would be nice to have since the exhaust is not the lightest thing when you have no leverage. I thnk that should be it. Wait I think now would be time to replace your rubber exhaust hangers since you do have a 91'. You know to avoid any unnessacary exhaust dragging. Dig the pun.
Well all you should have to do is drive it up on your ramps or jack it up and put stands under for support. (On a level surface) and get under the car and I would start at the cat but it doesn't matter where you start. The exhaust is suppported by the rubber hangers so undo the cat bolts you will notice one side of the cat is bolts and the other side is nuts so don't get confused. Undo the exhaust from the cat and then you ahve to use a 12mm wrench for the muffler support near the back tire and then the back will just pop off the hooks. When that is done make sure you completely assymble the HKS exhaust tightly to avoid any leaks and then hook it up in the reverse order.
Please is I have missed anything throw it in. Safety 1st! what good is a HKS muffler when you are breathing HK(M)S oxygen mask.

well, it should be a diret bolt on, since when i installed my HKS sports cat back it was a perfect fit, and i guess HKS is pretty well known for quality and i guess that's good fitment as well.
as for me, i didn't even bother w/ the rubber, i just slapped it in.
you might want help from a friend or so, when ur removing the stock exhaust, it's nuts, that thing weighted like 100000lbs, and it was about to crush me into peices (over exaggeration, do not take it seriously). and when ur bolting it down, have a friend hold the exhaust in place, it took me 'bout 2hrs, but i was looking for tools all over the place. ie jacks, stands, wrachet

the HKS Hiper should come with gaskets and new bolts and stuff...including a sticker (whoa), mine did. the gaskets look nice. I didn't use them, only cause I forgot about them.
Also, I agree, having a helper will definately make things easier.

dont forget to use some liquid wrench or wd40... it'll make your life a lot easier when taking off those baked exhaust studs.
WD-40 is also good for slipping on those exhaust hangars

I suggest having a breaker bar for the Bolts on the catalytic converter. they are rusty and tight.. I used my torque wrench. Also before you put it on the rubber hangers, check to see if the Tow hook is gonna hit the exhaust canister, or tips.. I had to put a peice of rubber on mine to keep it from making noise. If I had it to do again, I would have removed the Tow hook. It was VERY annoying. A little grease will help you get the hangers in the rubber peices too.
Also I agree this is a 2 man job b/c of awkwardness.

breaker bar is CRUCIAL to the install procedure. my f'n cat bolts were on there so tight i actually broke the head off a stainless steel bolt before turning it. either way, it is definitely something you can do yourself. i did it in 1hr with no help and only jackstands, yes it's a bit awkward though. maybe i'll have to send that install write up to West again and see if he puts it up.

Yeah, be careful about removing the nuts on the cat. converter side. I snapped my studs off because they were rusted on and it was a bitch to drill them out. Replaced them w/ stainless bolts, so it worked out, but was a pain in the ass.
If you have a torch, might be able to get them off easier using that to expand them before unbolting. Using wd40 just wasnt enough to loosen em up.

Well acctully if you want some good stuff get pb blaster it is in a funny looking can.I would say spray that stuff all over all the bolts and let set for the night and then go out the next morning and take them off. Here is a tip for all who want to take off a rusty bolt.Turn the bolt/nut a little as you are tighting it back up and then back off the oppisite way. This helps sometimes to break loose rust on the bolts and nuts. But if you want to replace the little rubber hangers just go to your nearest auto part store and get some exhaust hangers.
