Help with taking pics

so i got a new camera(canon sd600, i know not a real photography camera) and was jsut wondering what are somethings i should be playing with to make the pics nice?

what i did with mine is set up soemthing in a constant space. then shoot 1 pic with every setting. just remember the order that you took them. now load them on your pc then check out for yourself which pic is better! its all trial and error!
