View Full Version : Where to reinforce the SSAC exhaust manifold??

I might be looking into getting one of these but after a bit of research, I heard they tend to crack/have hair line cracks/holes/etc. But, I also ran into the option of reinforcing these manifolds.
Where would you recommend I do some reinforcing welding on the manifold as well as the option of installing/welding some brackets?? Also, do you have any examples with pictures I can see??
Also, I hear there is a problem with thier gaskets not sealing as well and its better off just using the oem set. Correct??
Thanks, Chris

Between the Engine and the Turbo.

I heard the older top mounts are the ones that crack... Im not 100% they fixed the problem.
Theyre so cheap just get one and if it breaks buy another or dish out the big bucks for something better.

I swear this has been covered in the threads you searched. They come with a bracket. but, there is some argument on whether to use it or not.
IMHO. I would just Jet Hot coat it and call it a day. Also, make sure you use the tranny to DP brace.

dont brace it.. instead look into rocking solid motor mounts or bracing your motor and making your exhaust system hangers tight.. Motor vibration + heat is the killer here, not cheap welds.

According to many user in zilvia, SSAC provided low quality stuff, even tho they have a low price tag

Also split the flange between runners to allow for expansion.

wow! i have teh same question and was about to post a new thread.
here's my plan to save form cracking- syko engine mounts, spl tranny mount, and the megan racing flex downpipe (nismo engine mounts on right now). I am also going to get my manifold ceramic coated. lets just hope this is a realtively qualtiy mani b/c i don' feel like wasting money on teh coating

yes, if possible a flex dp, polyurethane exhaust hangers, and run perf. motor mounts with a perf tranny mount. Also, I would 2nd the splitting between runners. I am running syko mounts and a nismo tran. mount. Next on my list before I install my mani. is the poly. exh. hangers and flex dp. I don't know if mine is SSAC or not, I bought it off a guy who said it was LS Auto. I have never heard of them though, and nothing came up with a google search. I hope it is quality and the bracing stops any unnecessary movement/vibrations. If not, my neighbor knows how to weld..lol.
Either way...they look like quality welds, but I am no welder...so...who knows...

Oh, and actually...last time I looked before I bought the one I have now...they had them for sale and backed it with a 100% no cracking guarantee. You should be able to come across the same if you look for it.

you can fill your motor and tranny mounts with polyurathane bought from your local hardware store.. (my tranny mount is this way) and use hose clamps on your stock hangers to stiffen em up = cheap solution. 9 months strong on manifold w/above combo and solid motor mounts/no flex pipe. But if you dont mind rattling sounds coming from everywhere and hearing your drivetrain. =D

syko mounts are hella stiff.
went from nismo to syko
i remember them saying that it doesn't raise ur motor
but damn, compared ot my nismo mounts
the motor is higher
had to bang out the frame where the downpipe is almost hitting the body
and now the damn exhaust is hitting the lsd, wtf is going on
phew got a little carrried away there /rant

BTW SSAC, all the welds suck, have someone go through and thoroughly clean and check it, especially for excess slag, a few I have encountered were loaded with slag still , not to mention the welds were all 4 runners meet on the inside just look like junk. Easiest thing is to have all the welds cut and rewelding by someone who has many years of experience at making clean neat!!! welds, not just joining the metal.

make sure you buy it from ssac, and not a rippoff imposter on ebay. Their is a slight difference that matters.

Damn, I didnt think my post would garner such response. I did however search, but as I said, I found out it needed rewelding, there just wasnt much info on where, hence my questions and wanting opinions.
Also, I might be getting a good deal on one, and I said ' to heck with it, why not!'. Plus, I absolutely hate putting back on the stock manifold as, well, its a bitch for the two bottom bolts.
Also, this is not a typical SR swap, its a CA, which I dont think megan makes an exhaust mani for. So, problem area arises there.
If I do get the deal, I might just go ahead andpick it up, take it to my buddys exhuast shop and have it looked over/rewelded up. We will see.
Any more responses/ideas?

can someone show an example of splitting the runners. i don't get what that means

^^^that means between each exhaust port, you make a cut. So instead of having a flange thats solid the whole way, they are seperated by the cuts. This allows for expanding of the metal. The runners get different temps and expand at different times.

I recommend replacing your worn out motor and transmission mounts. I also recommend Swain Tech coating.

ssac = a rippoff imposter on ebay
don't you fuckin know that?
I went megan racing :)

As noted before, find me a Megan racing manifold for a CA. I dont think it exists (not yet atleast)
