What is the car mel gibson drove in "Mad Max"?

Well its obviously some australian car, maybe a holden? I've been trying to find out for a few years. He drove the car in Mad Max, and Road Warrior. Anyone have any clue? In the ending credits the only auto company they mention is nissan motor co., and i highly doubt that cars a nissan.
