I dont know about this one, I would go with some one you can trust. JVC, Alpine etc.
You could try out the top one, I was thinking about getting it just for the hell of it, its cheap. But still. month of use, then poops itself is a likely outcome..

I rather dish out for a alpine/pioneer/eclipse unit than to get one of those units that you listed.
but thats just me

Ive had 3 JVC decks, all show no go. The last deck I bought was a Sony knowing they had made giant leaps in quality and I wasn't disapointed, awesome deck in every way. I just don't have a lot of money to spend after buying the car but I want to play my MP3's. Ive used the cassette->ipod thing but the quality is horrible. if anyone has other options for me id like to hear em.

I really dislike the look of alpines and also I dont think that one comes with USB/SD which I would put to good use. Burning CD's is a pain in the ass when you can drag/drop into a card

first off an mp3 cd is plenty of room to squeeze in songs... I know I was able to compress a nice little 30 gig collection over 15 cd's and just did it all via alphabetical order. Infact if you have an ipod then there are alpine and pioneer models that have an option to allow it to be pluged in.
sometimes you just have to get over looks and go for function.

i got a sony with the color changing face. plays MP3s WMP files i think also. at the time it was a middle of the road system. i got it from a sony outlet referbished. it has suited me well for 2 years but now its got errors with some burnt CDs and just plain F^(Ks up, but thats what you get for $150. it usualy cost $200 no fancy TV screen like the ones you posted

ive bought refurbished electronics and stuff imported from china with no problems whatsoever however ive had plenty of new brand name stuff break so its partially luck. just playing MP3 cd's is fine but if I can get something with USB/SD for the same price why not? thats why im posting this. maybe someone who knows more then I will enlighten me.

Well, what do you care more about, features or sound quality?

doesn't the deck just provide power and functionality? isn't it the speakers that really affect the sound quality? Of course I want that above all. but hopefully I can get functionality and quality

I have had 3 Sony MP3 decks, all still work just fine, got the first one back in late 2002, used it until I flipped the car in 2003, then my brother put it in his car and used it until he wanted something different and I sold it. Guy I sold it to is STILL using it.
Next one, I got last year just before I started actually driving my S13, played MP3s and had the color-changing face and all that goodness, I just decided I wanted something different and sold it to a friend of my brothers.
May, this year, I actually went through with the "something different" thing and got a new one that plays MP3/WMA and ALSO has an AUX jack in the front, for if I was ever trendy enough to care to desire an IPOD.
My vote is with Sony

the deck also minipulates the sound as its an amplifier and thus your able to make decisions on how the sound is minipulated. Also all units have different preamp amounts and bandwidth ranges that make add to the differences in sound and quality.
if your into audio then you know there is a difference between a kenwood and an eclipse deck weather it be the low end model or the high end.

PHLIP,
you've had 3 Sony's, but have you owned any other decks to compare them to?
I have a 4 Channel Rockford Fozgate amp among other goodies that I could use to power my speaker so I dont necessarily need power over function. Im just trying to decide how to stuff everything in my truck without looking like crap. I want a stealth install

Think of this as well,
The cd deck is what reads the cd. The extra amp boosts the power/signal emitting from the head unit. if you have a good external amp *which depends on the condition of that rockford* it will improve the overal sound but wont be as great as if you got a proper unit and then added on that amp.
the deck is where it starts and the rockford amp is the middle man and your speakers are the end result. if you want stealth then mount the stuff where the spare tire is

Just go to A&B Sound and have them point you in the right direction.

I have the Alpine CDA-9855. Its one of the best head units I have ever had. The display is very bright. With the angle of the S13's dash, the sun usually puts a bad glare over a head unit. This display is still very visible even with direct sun glare. Also, the glide touch button is very cool and easy to navigate, just takes a little bit to get used to.

I've had Sony, Alpine, Pioneer, Panasonic and Blaupunkt.
Panasonic's are crap. Have it in the 240 and when I have the time/money it is gone.
Sony is more concerned with power than quality. Pumps the speakers but can end up sounding flat.
Alpines sub $200 decks are crap. The 240 came with one Their high end decks sound great but they are spendy.
Pioneer's low end decks aren't bad but their premier decks are 10x better.
I put a Blaupunkt deck in the DD with the stock speakers. Sounds better than my components in the 240. They don't have the features that the other decks have and can get spendy as you add features. Typical German function over form.
I would say Blaupunkt>Pioneer/alpine>Sony>>>Panasonic.

To Futher add.
I had an OLD sony deck when I first got my hatch *previous owner left the nice JBL componet speakers but left his old backup deck*
I went and got the 9853 model of alpine and WOW I was in love, infact I got quite a few compliments from the locals about how my audio setup without a sub sounded great.
replaced the stock rear speakers with some infiniti references... wow I can acually hear the rear speakers.
Thats why I love alpine but may not get them again as I like the new pioneer premium line over some of the alpines.
