Just out of curiosity I was wondering if the sr20 swap is more illegal than adding a turbo to a ka24de engine; or if there is even so thing as "more illegal"?

Not like it matters... they r both illegal...  but i think smog wise, the KA is more illegal than the SR, due to the greater displacement of the KA engine, thus putting out more emission...

How do you figure that? The SR20DET was never DOT approved for use in any automobile anywhere in the US, that is about as illegal as you can get, saying nothing of emissions. When/if Greddy produces their KA-T kit that would be DOT, CARB(CA) and SMOG(CA) legal in all 50. A KA-T is completely legal in many places provided it meets emissions standards, as either KA or SR should if they are tuned/running properly.

In terms of legality; I'd rather pull off my turbo around emmisions time then pull out the engine...

Ok let me clear this up.I have talked to several mechanics that are ase and emmissions specialist and one the ka-t is leagal as long as the turbo frommthe company is.So call and ask and yes the sr20 is totaly illigal for smog due to dot regulations. You can pass emmissiond with a ka-t as long as you have a funtioning cat and you make sure you have ran the car for awhile befroe you take the test with the cat on.

&nbsp; If you have a feeling that you wont pass just turbo your ka-t and take the test if you fail just take your turbo off and retake the test.yo have 14 days before you rejection stiker runs out. &nbsp; But i have gotten this from a few mechs that have there own shop.

Actually the entire turbo kit for each specific car has to be passed by CARB. &nbsp;Just because a turbo from one application by a manufacture is legal does not make that turbo on another car legal.

For example. &nbsp; When HKS was developing the GT2835 turbo kit for the Integra. &nbsp; The "kit" had to be approve. &nbsp; Not only that they do testing on the kit after it has been driven on the subject car for 3000 miles. &nbsp;CARB is very specific.

CARB only applys in California. Each state and county have their own motor vheical codes. The simple thing to do would be to go to your local emissions inspection station and ask. I know that here in VA an aftermarket turbo on a car is 100% legal as long as all the factory emissions equipment is in place and the levels coming out of the tail pipe are under the limit. Where as in California any modification to motor must be carb approved.

Or leave 20 bucks sticking out of the ash tray when you pull in to the inspection station. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>
