vlsd woes......

ok, so im driving today, and i let off the gas and notice a loud clunk from the rear end.......does it everytime i let off, or if i push the clutch in at moderate/high revs..u know what im talking about.....

so i get home, and jack up the rear and stick it in 1st......turn the wheels and whaddayaknow, same clunk, from the diff........and when the car is in gear, i can rotate the wheels all the way around, w/out hardly any resistance!!!

so, my guess is, my j30 is SHOT TO HELL......just wanted some insight before i went out and bought something and didnt fix the problem......

I have that soemtimes w/ my s13 vlsd. I think its the play at the "axle yoke" [?... the part of the diff that bolts to the driveshaft]. Another thing I did to check it was get under the car when its still on the ground and turn the driveshaft w/ my hand to see how much play there is. I think theres a certain limit b4 you need to replace stuff, check the FSM in the "PD" section I think. I just ignore it and the car seems fine... <:/

One weird I also hear is when Im in neutral coasting turning left, i hear a clunk-clunk-clunk sound. Anyone also get this? I have subframe collars, so maybe that transmits more noise, but iono. I thought only 2ways clunk like that... and mine is much more weak and muffled than a 2way lsd clunk...

would that prevent or cause the problem? just curious as to why it would matter...i am going to be installing spacers in the next week or so..

Do this. jack up the car, put it in first, and grab your drive shaft and turn it. If you can move the drive shaft a lot before you actually start moving the gears, then you have a clearence issue between your pinion gear and your ring gear. Since its when you let off it means you dont have sufficient contact on the coast side. Just normal wear adjusting it is very precision work though so unless you have the right measurement tools and a lot of spare time i wouldnt reccomend you do it yourself.

i do, will they make a difference? or, are you just asking b/c they send more noise to the cabin......
