That is what I would like to call a lack of space for a lot of power.

I don't think those turbos will ever spool. Seriously though, why would they twin turbocharge a inline 4 engine??? Wouldn't it be better to just go with a huge single snail??

The moment of inertia increases larger the turbo gets. Basically if you had 2 small turbo's vs one large turbo both inducing the same amount of air, it would take about twice as much energy to spin the large turbo. That is strictly a text book answer, so take it with a grain of salt. But it is totally possible for a sequential turbo setup to flow the same volume of air and spool faster that a single large turbo. However there are more variables that would come in to play in any specific instance. One other thing to consider is a single large turbo is a lot simpler and less expensive than using 2 smaller size turbos.
Here is a link to another discussion on sequential vs single turbo's with some really good info and some physics notes care of freshalloy's own Asad.

Twin Turbo will certainly give better pick up..
I had an RX7 FD before I got my Silvia, and the twin turbo was pretty impressive to get your car up to speed, however I tried putting a big turbo, I got a lot more horses on Dyno, but my 0-60 actually suffered.
I did 12.37s on 1/4 mile on twin turbo
But 10.77s on a single big turbo.
Top end is much better for big turbo..
If you are just driving on the streets with lots of traffic lights, twin turbo would be better..
