Well my s14 black tops t-28 just took a shit and well i am looking for a new turbo . I have my eyes on a 2871 r in a .64 trim because i was told of the super fast spool and nice power band . But the .86 ar trim is upwards of 400 + hp but the spool is pretty laggy . So i called around to some diff shops for prices and I talked to a guy , which he stated they come in 3 diff trims on the compressor wheels . He suggested I go with the biggest compressor trim because it creates more hp per lbs of boost . Also that the .86 ar is not gonna make a real significant difference in turbo spool . But I here many diff oppinions and well i want to hear what people have to say from the people that have them on the car . I want to have quick - moderate spool nice power . My goal is to be able to drift , auto cross and still have it capable of being perfectly streetable . As far as hp I want roughly 360- 380 whp and up to 400 if I wanted but truthfully 380 is perfectly fine .

The .64 will be much better for you. It is perfect for drift, autox, and street. .86 is too laggy for all of those things you plan on doing.

Anyone have any Idea of how compareable the smaller IHIs from Tomei/Apexi/PE are to the 2871?
I've seen some good things said about the IHIs but its all kind of vauge. seems like they don't have the following the 2871 does.

ok so i have now made up my mind but the guy i talked to over at hybrid dynamics said they came in three different trims on the compressor wheel and suggested the 54mm since its the biggest and said it would not effect spool and adds more hp per lbs of boost .... can anyone confirm this i mean i have talked to like 3 diff people and they have all said they same just wanted to see if anyone has used this info ?

bigger compressor housing = more power
a small housing vs big housing at same boost doesnt mean same power
the .64 ar is perfect for maxing out the SR internals, the right ECU tune and full bolt ons is more then plently unless you start planning on doing internal work

no i dont really plan on going internal as of yet but what about the center mm turbines ....

Not to be rude. I want you to post up ALL of your modifications to your car, and your budget to further this project. How many 350+hp cars have you driven before? Please be as HONEST as possible, seeing as how b.s. is only going to hurt YOU. After i see the whole picture I should have a great recomendation for you.

380 whp is pretty nuts.. my car probably has 230 whp and its plenty. before u throw too much money into a turbo, consider suspension upgrades for drifting/autox. i beat sti's and evo's all day as long as they're stock.. and same goes in the turns. even tho they are AWD, i can gain on them in the turns easy. power isnt everything... id suggest putting money into suspension. but a turbo upgrade would be nice :) autodynasty or dynasty auto on ebay sells the gt2871r.. has anyone else seen it? its only $400 for the .64 trim.. so i had to ask. is it legit or not???

well I will chime in here. I am in the same predicament as you, I only want a new turbo though, lol. I am gonna go with the 2871 .64 a/r in the T-28 flange (AKA HKS GT-RS). I will let you know how it goes. my car puts down about 230 WHP 240 TQ and its fun but not enough and like you I auto-x and drift quite a bit so response is really key. unlike you though I want some more easliy obtainable goals like about 330 to the wheels (I hear the stock SR cams limit you there anyway). Like these guys were saying anywhere above 300 is rediculous, I have friends that have 375+ 240's and those cars are nuts, a little too nuts for drifting and auto-x, in my opinion any way, but fun none-the-less

As of right now i have a s14 black top , fmic 24 x 12 x 3 , blitz type r bov, walbro 255 fuel pump ,koyo radiator samco radiator hoses and i am waiting on the dual flex a lite fans, tomei 550cc injectors sittin in my room , greddy rocker arm stoppers , apexi super afc , 3 " exhaust from down pipe back , no cat with 3 " hks high power muffler . I have the se 5 lug hubs in my room as well . Pretty much all the shit i have on my car is being switched out as i just threw stuff on the car to get it out of the shop . Because it sat there for a year . As far as future mods , peak performance manifold , greddy 3 " 02 pipe and 3 " down pipe , megan racing cat , apexi 3 " n1 exaust .

He's dead on on this one, do this, you won't regret it for the money.

what are you going to do for engine management? Do you not plan on using cams?
No cams, = .64 ar is sweet.

For the time being i wasnt gonna do cams i want to eventually . I am waiting for my tire bonus so i can get the avcr , but i need to eventually go to an enthalpy ecu rom burn and the 550cc you can tune with the super afc .

Do yourself a favor and either rebuild the motor and upgrade the internals. These motors are 10-15 years old. You'll also need a turbo elbow (didn't see it on the list) head gasket, head studs and if you go w/enthalpy/rom tune a z32 mafs to complete the supporting mods.
With this setup (no cams, intake manifold or bigger throttle body) don't expect to push more than 340-350whp. I would go top mount t3/t4 w/external wg and call it a day. You should see 375-400whp all day long

Find my post about the AFC, Enthalpy tune should be good (he can build it to suit your needs), but you will need a retune for everymod. It is understandable that you would use the turbo now. Like steve said, definately the .64 a/r, then build around that. Consult enthalpy for safe boost level in reguards to your settup with his ecu.

yep
definitely going to be a better tune option.
