ok, i've been told that the SR would not pass emmissions in CA, but i have seen a few people running SR's in CA, how do you do this?

I know that it can pass the sniffer, but the visual examination is where i was told the trouble was....

please enlighten me because i really want to do a SR swap, or maybe KA-T? i dont want to push too much HP only about 240-260 RWHP.

The sr20det is not legal anywhere in the US. Generally you have to pay a shop under the table to pass you.

I don't know what the rules are for ka+t I don't think its legal but I doubt it would pass the sniffer anyway, so again you'd have to pay under the table.

Don't forget that Greddy has plans to make smog legal turbo. Whether or not they'll actually ever release it is something entirely different though

Yeah...most JDM motors are a big no go in cali due to emmissions...only way to pass is with a few $20 bills.

Its not just cali or emissions (though it is those also ) its that there are a bunch of rules about what engines you can use, 2 that I know off the top of my head are...

No engine that wasn't in a US production car can be used anywhere in the US. (RB series, sr20det, etc...) There ARE loopholes to this, but they are extremely expensive...like what motorex does with RB's in skylines.

If that wasn't enough, no engine can be swapped for an older one. So a redtop s13 sr20det couldn't be put in an s14.

bastards, always have to make it so complicated. I say, if it passes the sniffer they shouldn't give a damn

Of course, this only counts for street driven vehicles...they don't care what you use on the track.

I agree. Infact I think the most economical thing you could do is slip the emissions tech a few bills and not get tickets. I mean... it's kinda hard to just plan out "not getting tickets" but if you drive like a square around cops and don't ever rev too mcuh you're good.

If you crash your car and if the insurance company finds out you swapped your engine to an illegal one on the accident report, bye bye insurance.

Not this one in the faq. We've done better in the past.

BTW: Dave - the older/newer thing in only in a few states. There are no fed. regulations on updating/backdating. State rules vary. No older engines in CA, but VA could care less - as long as you have all factory emissions control equipment and the car passes the sniffer (if you live in NoVA).

I've seen people who have totalled their car just keep it anyways and put them out for show. I guess insurance company didn't here about their crashes. It would suck to have have the insurance fins out you got a racing engine though.
