So i just bought a 89 240sx and it seems like the water in the reservoir tank is boiling i can hear it when i popped the hood. The temp gauge doesnt say that it's hot...it's at the center. So could it be my head gasket? t-stat? hoses? radiator?? what should i do first? i have not yet smog the car to register it will it pass smog with this problem? thanks:(

I would be weary about your stock temp gauge anyways. We have blown a radiator on a temp gauge that read centerline

best bet would be to get an aftermarket gauge and see what is really happening.

change your radiator cap. sounds like it is bad or it is not the right pressure causing it to let cooliant go into the over flow tank.

check your waterpump if your radiator is full, and the cap is still n good condition.

was doing it to me too, i just ordered an aftermarket gauge, though mine would go towards Hot right after warmup, turns out i had an air pocket that was moving through the system since it was low, and the elbow line that goes from the intake side of the block to the metal hardline that continues to the heater box was split, and slowly leaking. your overflow tank isnt boiling its just the air escaping out of the radiator and making bubbles.

there are lots of replies but i really believe the first thing to look at is to make sure there is no air in your cooling system.
