View Full Version : CPU Fan loud

Ok, the fan itself isn't loud (as in the bearing or something), but its sucking/blowing MASSIVE amounts of air. Sounds like a room full of servers. I cleaned off my heatsink and blow dusted out my box of dust...and boy was there a lot of it in there. But I did it until there wasnt any more dust blowing anywhere.

Is it the fan, motherboard, or what?

I watercool my computer now becuase its quieter then how it used to be with a high rpm fan just to keep it cool.

Did it do it all of a sudden? Mine only turns on if it can't handle the stress anymore or if the water isn't enough.

Go water cooled Neejay!

panaflo is the quietest good fans last i remember

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=panaflo&Submit=ENE&Ntk=all&N=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

then again last time i actually did case mods was like in 2001

so, maybe not

*edit* i just reread your post, i have no idea if its the cpu fan (i thought i read CASE fans)

i pieced mine together with teh help of http://ocforums.com

first time has its trials and errors.. like water leaks all over the video card lol.. water leaks aint bad tho, just shut the system down find out what needs to be fix *usually its where the hose lines fit over couplings*.. then clean everything with alcohol and let it dry.

i was thinking of doing a peltier setup for shits and giggles with the water cooling but its time to prolly retire thsi cpu anways

i hate wiring lol.. i wanna upgrade my computer now, but im sure ill carry over my stuff to watercool and use same case
besides right now, i dont have computer building money for top of the line shit now a days..

LOL you are using the same pump i used back when i was WC'd. I didnt like the watercooling in my system. Was too much to maintain. I stick with air now, but i use the Arctic Cooling stuff, just like on your video card. I have the ac freezer pro for my cpu. Quietest on the market, cheap, great cooling. Right now im stock on the video card, but it isnt so loud. My 6800ultra had the nv silencer.

What are your system specS?

BFG Geforce 6800GT OC AGP
SB Audigy 2
Chieftec Dragon mid
Antec 350w PSU

badass back in 2004.. when i had $400 to blow at a video card lol

its a cheap fix. just go to newegg and buy a new one and install it. do it now before the fan fails and your computer overheats though. arctic cool is good stuff. thats what i use.....

haha just kidding im not

but people did make fun

then cases came pre-modded and it was gay after that

It's the cpu fan. Its an OEM Dell case, and its about 5 years old now. And the fan doesn't make noise itself per se, but it just sucks/blows (forgot which one) very hard...like my computer is overheating or something.

It's a P4 2.4GHz. Going out of town, so I guess I'll try ordreing a new one Sunday night/Monday morning.

At one point there were 12 fans in my computer, and a separate power supply to run them. Two of them where huge ass Nidec Beta Vs that pushed 260cfm alone. I had to cut a hole in the top of the case and build a plexiglass blower duct. It sucked in anything that got near it. I had to get rid of the cooling system because it made the floor shake and it could be heard from downstairs.

You need to replace that fan ASAP if its making noise. Its means its about to fail, and that would be a bad thing.

I dont understand how some people can stand that noise. I got rid of my WC setup cause it just buzzed and annoyed the hell outta me.

Make sure you check the setup first and see what socket type you have so you get the right cooler that will fit. Usually on Dells they have this huge duct that will suck the hot air right off on top of the heatsink.

Those little 40mm FSB fans go bad all the time. If you have one I would dump it for a Zalman passive heatsink.

What CPU do you have? Can help as to recomend other Heatsinks.

My recent projects:

Water cooled

never got a completed pic. Will have to do next time I see it.

computer fans buzzing become annoying very quickly to me,
if the fan(s) are working properly and are just too loud consider putting in a switch that you can flip to change them between 12V and 5V.
be careful not to let your shit overheat and that your PS can handle the load on the 5V rail.
i have 5 80mm + 1 120mm fans hooked up like that and it works very well, also have a seperate potentemeter (sp?) on the cpu.

easy to do and free if you have extra switches

offtopic:
have any of you heard of/ done a computer that is entirely submerged in motor oil? that will be my next project - i want water cooling but without the pumps/fans

It's Clear Soy Fry Oil, not motor oil.

The aggressiveness of individual types of oil (above all those with a high fatty acid content) when it comes to plastics should not be taken lightly. For simplicity's sake, we decided on vegetable oil - but we recommend motor oil.

Here is my current setup. Nice and quiet when the side panel is one. I need to upgrade the 120mm fan and add a fan on the side panel. Airflow isnt too good.

Sorry for the lack of replies...I went out of town.

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 OE Setup. Nothing aftermarket. I haven't dived into building a custom PC yet (I could, but just haven't). I currently have a P4 2.4GHz. I'll have to check into that Zalman. So it basically just cools without needing a fan?

If you look at the two systems I built for others. The first one below the CPU fan there is a little 40mm fan in a silver box. That's the FSB heatsink. It went bad with a horrible squeal. Searching online led me to find that they always go bad and are the cause of most fan nosies. I replaced it and every computer since I remove the fan if it has it and put a passive in as you can see in the second PC(purple/blue heatsink). It should work just fine unless you are hella OCing and then you should WC it with the CPU. only $10 too
http://xoxide.com/zalman-zm-nbf47.html

That's for a annoying fan noise. For a whirring/vibrating sound that increases with CPU load it's the CPU fan is shot.
This is prolly your best bet for your CPU. Has the best reviews for cooling and sound,
http://xoxide.com/zalman-cnps9500-led-cooler.html

I would just replace both and kill two birds with one stone. Stock sucks.
