where is your boost gauge located at? You can hook up to the radio lumination wire if near center console. If near the steering wheel, use the dimmer switch.

Also about your problem, did you use a volt meter or test light to see if that gets power? Maybe bad connection?

Yah, use the radio wire.. so it comes on when you turn your lights on.

iirc the illumination wire for stock radio is blue. correct me if im wrong. But if you have an aftermarket radio/cd player you can hook up to the headlight power anywhere between the headlight switch and the light bulb.

You're wrong.

Illumination feed is red/blue, dimmer wire is red/yellow. Both found behind every switch in the dash, the radio, and the cluster.

what model car is it?

This is the most important question.

what model car is it?

Since this forum is devoted to the Schassis and Z32 we're going to assume it's one of those.
Wire is the same color for all models in question.

I can't remember the last time somebody posted about the Z chassis.

I also hooked mine up to the dimmer switch, so that I can adjust the brightness to be consistent with the cluster

i just hooked mine up to the ignition power and ran all my gauges through a switch. So if i don't want them on i can turn the lights off
