I am an avid car guy but i have a lack of knowledge on Nissan diffs. Recently in a phone conversation with Doug from Fairlady Motors (Up Garage USA) I made myself look like an ass with that lack of knowledge... Anyways, can someone help me out on the
different types
which is better
more expensive
model changes
jdm to usdm
6 bolt
Opinions please
etc....
Anything would be great.
Thanks, Matt

I searched... but nothing as specific as I would like... I would also like opinions from you guys. I am speaking specifically S13, not really worried about any other models. I am getting a S13 rear subframe and making it fit into my Corolla.. From that I am making a jig and reproducing tubular rearend as a direct placement, with full heim joint suspension. This will also not be a daily driver by any means. Thanks

LOL, you did say anything.
Clutch type- Uses clutch plates and is typically more harsh than a HLSD or VLSD. They come in 1.5 and 2 way usually. 1.5 has full lockup characteristics under acceleration and about half under deceleration. A 2way locks up both ways. This is with the gear engaged/not in neutral. If it is in neutral then the LSD won't lock up. People like these for drifting and a lot are willing to use them for the street also.
HLSD uses gears to transmit torque to the outer wheel. There is a good writeup on www.howstuffworks.com Typically people like these for autox/daily drivers/road racing. They don't have any wearing parts per say. So it should last the longest out of the LSDs.
VLSD is a viscous unit. It uses a fluid that thickens when it heats up due to the two wheels spinning at different rates. When this fluid thickens then the wheels start to become locked together. These typically are the easiest to ruin if you drive hard. Most people will go with something else just because there is no gurantee that you are going to find a working unit.
Anything else just search. There is much more but those are some basics.

Thank you.
Now this car is not going to be a daily, and I plan on getting a 2 way lsd anyways. My question is toward the fact that you can only use vlsd diffs with vlsd axles. 6 bolt are clutch type right?
Also, you cant just order one aftermarket differential and get rid of the vlsd for a 2 way. Or can you get one aftermarket 2 way to replace them all and are interchangable?

Best way to know for sure what you are getting is call the company you are ordering from. They will tell you which output shafts are needed for the particular diff. SEARCH!!!!!

If you are just chaning out the interenals then all you really have to worry about is if it is for open or the viscous diff as the output shafts are different lengths.

With that said, welded diff.
60bucks, and done. Stock housing, axles, the whole shibang.
And its not DD, so you don't have to worry about tire squealing.
And its always locked, so you don't have to worry about it unlocking.
AND its easy on the pocket, with minimal maintenance.
DD Welded for meee!!

^ +1 for daily driven welded. :rawk:
Weld it! It's cheap, and perfect if you are planning on drifting. As long as you get it done from the right guy it will last. Right now I got Flyberts SPL weld going on almost a year of daily driving/drifting.

yay for Flyberts SPL welded diff, best investment in my car, mall parking lots are not so fun but drifting with a welded diff is a blast, no more disapointing lock up from a vlsd.

You don't weld a viscous. You'd need to get an open diff.
