well, i'm pretty much a track rat nowadays. clicking here (http://community.webshots.com/album/41528714AAgQCQ) will take you to 9 pictures which contain the following;

1) a rediculous viper
2) a spec miata (what i'm trying to build for next season)
3) the 02 Mcoupe i rode in with a BMWCCA instructor
4) the spec racers i have worked who knows how many hours on
5) friends 2.5RS and Si
6) a 240Z race car

i have other pictures if anybody knows a way to enhance picture quality i'd be happy to put them up.

last weekend i participated in my first actual competition of the year. steve (240 2NR) didn't show up.....why steve why? i ended up 5th out of around 12-15 cars. i was less than .5 secs from 3rd place, and a solid 2.5 secs out of 2nd or 1st. 2nd place went to another 240 owner (whom i'm pretty sure was far too modified to be in our class), and a purpose built neon that's driven by an instructor. but hey, i'm not all that dissapointed seeing as how i'm at the minimum mods for the class, while others are at their max. and West, you were right, the Dunlop Sport 8000's are junk when hot. 100 degree ambient temperatures didn't help anything. i might have well put crisco all over the damn things. i was especially happy when a few spectators told me i was going through corners faster than the other 240. i also put 2 wheels off for the first time, of course it had to be on what felt like my best run. but bottom line is this; i'm not racing for money, and i had fun, so who cares if i got beat by heavier modified purpose built cheaters right?

yeah the black one is mine in case you didn't know.

i also received 2 "is that a skyline" comments. which was odd because they were from 30+ yr olds.

My pics will follow in a day or so... I am so exhausted and sunburned that I just wanted to eat and go to bed last night.

But oh yeah - I had a nice little weekend myself. Summit Point main w/ NASA. Unlike Travis, I had a school (they won't let you race here unless you have a full fledged race car (cage, window net, rigid seat and seat back brace, fire suppression system, kill switch, etc.). Nonetheless, schools allow passing on straights and provide plenty of excitement for a weekend (not to mention that you can't race w/ any groups here until you get comp. licensed).

Not only was this weekend a school, there were also various series races - SCCS (road racing stock cars... wierd), USTCC (Touring Cars), Legends and Spec Racers (little handbuilts), American Iron (Camaros & Moose-tangs), 944 Cup, and... Travis' favorite - Spec Miatas.

The School was excellent and my instructor, an s14a owner, was incredibly helpful. The only things that passed me in my group were high horsepower cars (Camaro SS, C5 Vette, M3's) on race rubber. Actually, an erratic ITR passed me too... and proceded to loop it and nearly roll it (2 wheels 12-18" up) while 2 car lengths ahead of me (I love going not being able to lift, but deciding whether to risk it by lifting slightly or just T-bone the fvcker as he spins back across the line ). The racing was also great to watch. The SCCS cars were fast as hell and managed to turn right amazingly well USTCC cars are always fun - expecially when they come from big, multi-level enclosed trailers w/ CA tags. But, I admit, my favorite spectating was during the 944's and Spec Miatas (they ran in the same race b/c neither had over 25 cars). 944's are badass, but everyone should already know that. More impressive though were the SM's. Those little things fly around that track like they have wings! My GOD they are fast.

My pics will include some general race shots, a great series of a SM car spinning into the dirt in an 80 mph right turn , some overview shots, and hopefully some nice pics of the s14 in action!

Travis - those SM's look like a LOT of fun. I understand the hardest part is finding one w/ a hard top - which costs $2000 to go buy. They were not too far off the pace of the 944s! While I was on the grid waiting to go out Sunday, one of them (Sat's race winner) got loose coming around the aforementioned 80 mph right and wound up (formerly) shiny side down. Ugh! (In total, I think about 5-7 cars went off on rollbacks due to wrecks - highlights included racers: rolled Mx-5, treed Moosetang; School: M3 straight into the wall after his steering wheel came off, and a FD RX-7 that went a$$ first into an Armco - both totalled).

Nice travis! listening to all the fun everyone else is having is really making me home sick!

Hippo! OMG what is up with you and R's? IIRC a yellow ITR spun in front of you on the exit of Oak tree at speedtrial.

Any way it sounds like you both had a awesome weekends.

I want some pics, soon!

Travis- Well I wanted to be there, but whiteline screwed up my order and sent me front koni's for a suuzki belano (wtf) instead of ones for a 240sx. This means I have stock front struts on lowered springs with rear konis (set on stiff before I knew I had the wrong fronts) with springs, so my car is very unsettled and a bit too eager to over steer (I may have just uncovered the secret to buget drifting).

Instead of going to the track saturday, eric and I took a little more time and finished our installs, and then went yesterday for the w2w racing. You missed a fire and rolled v-dub, it was a fun day in the sun.

So what times were you running on saturday?

Yup - Mad skillz yellow ITR at Summit Jefferson went off right in front of me in 09/01; MSY ITR at Oak Tree in 02/02; MSY ITR in T-3 at Summit main. I see the pattern here... every time it is shortly after they pass me on a straight and I reel them in in the next 1-4 corners. They just try to push too much, get into trouble, lift, more trouble, lift more, SNAP. This time, it was the infamous Ross... that kid should be banned from HPDEs - he's just too much the stunna. Something like 10 events - each w/ an off.

At any rate, you gotta come out next time. It was great!

Travis - note 240 reeling in ITR in the turns (of course, now that I am going up a level, that is a lot less likely).

alright steve, i'll let that slide then. either way, i ran a 1:38.5
i'm a little dissapointed since i ran a 1:40.2 with it stock except for the tires. but the high temperatures didn't help anything, and my tires are pretty much done, so who knows what woulda happened with decent rubber. i'm thinking about going back for the school and autox in august on new rubber, possibly some azeni's.

markk- i kept up with that itr through the corners a couple weeks back, but he just walked all over me on the straight. i still want one, but current financial situations prevent it.

Well lets keep your 0-3 contact with spinning ITR streak going

Travis- I'm pretty sure I'll make at least one more school this summer and I better make it to the last event. I'm debating if I should ditch my all season tires that are on my stock wheels in favor of some azenis rubber myself. I'm also debating if I should get a roll bar. More stiffness than a rstb and a lot safer, plus it's no points. I really need to focus on my seat and harness first though. Sat in a guy's M3 with a sparco rev and it was really nice, not as snug as the momo rookie I sat in, but would be more tolerable in a daily driver, too bad it's twice as much green.

1:38's pretty good. I ran a 1:44 at the school in stock class with all season tires and a cold track. My goal if I ever get out again is to be under 1:40 this summer, and based on the handling improvement with eric's car I think that's reasonable. Plus more track time will certainly bring more understanding and confidence on the track. Currently it's an oversteering pig that corners really flat. Before it was a balanced car with way too much body roll. It will all be right soon.

Steve, that was a Sparco Evo, not a "rev". Just FYI. I should post a pic of that guy's E30 M3...it was tight.

i would kinda like to sell my pro-kits in favor of something stiffer......but who knows what'll happen. the only other one i can make it to is the first weekend in aug, so you better go.
1.38 is ok.....i'm sure i could get into 137's with current setup without a lot of difficulty. but it sure would be nice to have a car of equal setup to everybody else for once. you should be able to drop below 140, i wouldn't worry about it all that much. of course you do have garbage tires that are probably worse than mine.

I think I'll be acquiring some of those in the not too distant future myself. I think I might get another two weekends and 3,000 mi. out of my RE71s. Tires suck!

Good about the ITR. The world needs more originality. Granted, I got walked in the straights but I've yet to have one open up on me in the turns (agian, this will all change next time when I run w/ the next class). Besides, b/n the bandwagon and people who were watching me go around in my car - I got more compliments and questions than the ITRs. KA, no power mods, and a 120K mi. stock suspension passing ITRs raises suspicion and amazement

well well, things just got more interesting. i was just at the dealership having them show me where the fuck the EGR valve is and how to take the damn thing out when the guy that was looking at my car said "why are you missing?" i said.....that's just cause of that f'n valve isn't it? he's said no, not at all, you're missing on at least 2cylinders. i was told i need a new cap rotor and wires. so basically, i got 5th this weekend running on 2 good cylinders at best. now i feel much better. i can't wait until the next event now.

ps - i know the guy isn't lying to me just to make more money because i used to work there, and he was the guy that inspected and worked on my old Z32.

240 2NR
06-24-2002, 04:26 PM
Are you sure he didn't mean you're missing 2 cylinders, like you should have 6?

I hope you know I'm kidding.

I can't believe you ran missing on 2 cylinders without noticing. I was on a motorcycle that missed on one and it was really obvious, and I had never been near that bike before. Or is it an occasional miss? I would find it hard to believe you could miss (no pun intended) something like that on a car you drive daily.

tnord
06-24-2002, 05:20 PM
no i definitely didn't "miss" it. i just thought it was result of an EGR valve malfunction, since when i did the diagnostic, that's what the ECU told me. but yes, it definitely wasn't running right, i just didn't know what from.

travis, this is tony i met you at the track day saturday. nice job that day, its great to see s14's making a stand at the track. i was reading your first post though and i really am not modified any heavier than the rules state. i am right at the limits of 7 points. i would suggest if you want to be more competitive dont stay at the bottom of the mod points. if you dont want to mod your car anymore i would suggest taking things off to go to DS class or otherwise go all the way to the 7 point limit. anyways its all just for fun anyways.as far as going through the corners faster i dont think so thats how you get faster is in the corners not the straights. smooth in smooth out under control have fun see you at the next one when its time to put the neon down

tnord
06-24-2002, 07:55 PM
hey, what's goin on tony........here's why i think you're out of DP class.....not that it really matters.

change of spring rate-2pts
front strut tower brace-1pt (did you have a rear one too? i didn't look?)
camshaft change-2pts
exhaust-1pt
intake-1pt
high compression pistons- not sure what this falls under, but i assume it counts as something, i doubt it's considered a head revision, but would be one of those "other points may be assessed for other revisions by the tech inspector" category.
i saw some electric fans and whatnot, which might fall under the "accessory drive revisions" - 1pt

so if the pistons are 1pt, then that puts you at 8, if the fan(s) count, that's 9, and as you already know, the limit is 7. and if you are over the limit, i know you wouldn't try and knowingly (is that a word?) cheat. but like i said, it's not like we're racing for money, so who cares (of course we all like to win ).

that going through the corners faster comment, i was just told that by people that were watching in between 5 and 6, so who knows about the others. i'm aware that in order to win the damn thing i'm gonna have to do some more work on the car. fixing the whole miss-firing problem is definitely the place to start though. you should be able to take out that neon next time since you were only .05secs behind him last weekend.

ni*2*ss*4*an*0*
06-24-2002, 08:16 PM
travis i was looking over the rules and pistons do not change displacement so no points there, under the rules they say intake manifold change i didnt change the intake manifold so no points there the only thing i might be over on is the underdrive pulley but electric fans are no penalty. it doesnt matter because next season hopefully i will be full race. are you going to be at the next track day aug 4? oh and by the way yes the neon is going down. do you know waht that asshole told me later that night..i went over to congratulate him on his win (because im nice like that) he said on the next auto x school to ask for him as my instructor so you he can "show me what i did wrong" that takes a lot of balls to say that when you almost got beat. even better when that was my first track day and hes been racing for god knows how long see ya later good luck

tnord
06-24-2002, 09:09 PM
it comes down to interpretation of the rules, no you didn't change displacement, no you didn't change any of the intake manifold (but an intake is a point, i've asked), but you can't deny that high compression is an advantage over stock, but there isn't a rule the clearly outlines that modification, which is unfortuante, because it causes confusion. but the great part is, i don't think anyone in council takes it so seriously to get in a big uproar about it. and yes i'll be there aug 4th, i might go to the school again to get some more track time, and work some corners. i would hope you go since you live 15 min away. i didn't know you had pulleys, where'd you get em? that'd be sweet if you went full race......only thing is you gotta have a cage then. now you know why i don't like john banas. i'm thinking of getting some sways, an intake, and doing some other minor tweeks to hopefully take him out.

hope to see you around the boards more often. post some pics of your engine bay if you can, i'm sure you'll get some ooh's and ahh's, i know i was impressed.
