I know there's already threads about kicks and clothing, but I wanted Zilvia's opinion on fashion as a whole nowadays.

Fashion isn't what it used to be. Back in the "old-school" days of hip-hop, all that mattered were your hat and sneakers. But now, you need a nice pair of kicks, jeans, shirt, and sometimes a hat, depending. I liked how it was back then, when everyone had a different sense of style, not like today, where everyone has to buy the latest "in" shoes or shirt brand, etc. There's no originality anymore, correct me if I'm wrong. People might wear different things, but all-in-all, it's all the same.

What happened to the days of the Adidas shirts and the Adidas Superstars, and that's all you needed, and you still looked fresh. I'm not ragging on anyone though, as I have sort of molded into today's sense of style (Dunks, "vintage" looking shirts and pants).

I also noticed that alot of the people that used to wear the XL shirts and extra baggy pants, are now wearing M shirts and the right fit pants. I guess it's this new fashion culture of today.

Thoughts?

Just to show you what I wear on a typical day:

NormalClothing Nice blank teeshirt, fitting jeans, and NikeSB Classics. I don't treat the shoes like gold, i wear em like SHOES.

Man I'm old school too. Back in my b-boy hay day, you wouldn't catch me without the newest color adidas suit and shell toes. Really, I was ready to battle anyone at any time. Straight up. In the mall, at the park, what ever. That sounds funny to me now, but that was my life. People that know me knowadays crack up when I tell them about that stuff.

Now, besides work were I've worn a shirt and tie for the last 6 years, I wear pretty much what you said. Tighter pants and vintage style shirts. I'm still all about Puma's and Shell toes though. I still wear my Adidas suits though everyonce in a while when the weather is right. As soon as I put it on though, I wanna start up-rockin.

Cheat FTW! lol

I saw those red/black SB's at your house, wondered who they belonged to. I liked the SB's you had on also *ahem* sneaker head :coold: hahaha

I have 2 pairs of Dunks I really don't mind getting dirty, but I have 2 others that I take are of, my Melvins and my Supremes.

About the XL shirts I used to wear, I don't really know why I wore that, it looked cool back then I guess. Now that I look back on it, it looked gay as hell.

Man I'm old school too. Back in my b-boy hay day, you wouldn't catch me without the newest color adidas suit and shell toes.

I used to rock those everyday also, especially my all-white Superstars.

http://www.rs-sports.co.uk/images/FOOTWEAR/ADIDAS%20SUPERSTAR%20WEAVE%20'B'.JPG

You know a huge difference I noticed? In high-school, it was a must to get all-white shoes, you know, to keep clean and stuff, but once I got out of high-school, the all-white shoe trend died down, and I started getting multi-colored stuff, mostly Dunks.

I'm getting more and more into Vans slip-ons. They're cheap ($40) and I really wouldn't mind about getting them dirty, as I can always buy a new pair for cheap.

fashion is what you make of it

i just dress how i feel, comfortably but still try to stay fly where u can

if u keep it real and don't follow others then you end up creating your own style and outward appearance

stussys the only real mainstream brand i will cop and wear

i think like 75% of tees i own are all stussy

the worst part of sneaker culture unoriginality was the supreme box cap, supreme box t in black, with camo cargo shorts and dunks haha

i totally wanted a box supreme t tho :(

Bingo. I'm not like those people who HAVE TO look fly at all times. I'm not ragging on them, that's cool and all, but that's too much.

That's true too Logan, but it's hard to nowadays, but I still try to be o-rig-in-al.

I've come to the conclusion that nothings truly original, just a manifestation of stuff you've previously seen/encounted before

Staying with "fashion" is impossible, takes too much money and time :(

At least for guys styles don't change too much by seasons and years, so you can still rock the same tee from 2 years ago and get away with it

Plain colored t-shirts, medium-dark blue jeans, skate shoes or black rainbows. On really hot days I'll wear a pair of shorts instead of the jeans. I stopped buying name brand shirts about 5-6 years ago. I used to ride BMX a lot and shirts tore and stained really easily so now I just buy the haines 50/50 for a couple bucks a piece and don't worry if they get messed up.
My girlfriend bought me a bunch of collared shirts but I usually only wear them to work.

Yes to stay up with fashion you need mega $$$$ but if you create or own style, a timeless style, you will always be fashionable. I rock lacoste, d & g, prada, gucci, versace, and diesle, most bought before I started dropping every dime into my car. Not affraid to bust out my origin or hks tees thou.

I never buy what is in just what I like, I even still wear ecko clothes, that items that fit anyway xxl tees look weird on me now that im a m.

manonegra - WRONG! LOL, I wore vinyl pants with 40inch bottoms in highschool, and skateboard company tees

That Santa Cruz Screaming Hand t is pretty cool.
I hear a lot of kids - mostly skaters - are into skin tight jeans now. wtf?
I used to and still like to wear regular fitting jeans but a couple of sizes bigger. Goes back to my graffitti days.

yeah they're girl pants, which to me is totally a trendy thing right now. And the punk look is also comming back big time. I see these kids walking around in black skin tight pants with chains, mohawks with some type of ramones or old punk bands t-shirts.

It's kinda funny how stussy's making a comeback. It used to be popular in the late 80's early 90's. I still have a few 10 year old stussy tee's. I remember the story behind it: Shawn Stussy started selling shirts out of his garage somewhere in the OC and somehow he got hooked up with Nordstrom's. Then the brand disappeared for the past few years. Now my 15 year old niece is hittin' up stussy sales and now it's supposedly popular with the younger crowd...again kinda funny

i think you werent very aware of the fashion scene back then correct me if im wrong but people would always want to buy the hot commodity be it fashion or not... i think fashion is more diverse now... you have more choices of stuff to wear... you have streetwear fashion and other so called fashion scene out there... whats important is how you feel about your clothes... its not what you wear but how you wear it

I think the one awesome thing about the the Van's SlipOns is that you can jsut doodle on them to make them personal.

i've wanted to cop a pair just for this reason.
And my buddy's GF does alot of girlie doodles on hers, so that makes it a little more awesome. I was thinking of collab-ing with her to make some shoes for me.

Way. IIRC, she sued acryllic markers, and the stitching is still new, so its kinda shiny still. Flashing Glare.

There were a few other people that made those custom shoes, but some were too cliche' and ugly.

I still have my first pair of them that I learned how to break in. I wore them for years and years just when I was breakin. I'ma post some pics of them now. Now their like slippers.

Stussy, Jimmy'Z, Mossimo, Fresh Jive, Hang Ten... all those brands had a little revival in the late 80s early 90s but then they went mainstream at Macy's, Nordstrom etc and stopped being cool. Anybody remebers T&C with Joe Cool, Thrilla Gorilla and those surfing cannibals? That was my first 'fashion' obsession back in Junior High. All the philipino kids used to rock them with the pants folded up early MC Hammer style... lol.

Still have my first pair of Vans old skools from Junior high and they are still the most comfortable shoes I own. Also have two pair of snake skin steve maddens which I love.

for me it varies on the night...ripped or faded denim always beat up t-shirts some deisgner stuff (seven, dkny, 525, zenaga, armani, D&G, prada, etc.) go from suits to punk and everything in between...I wear what I like and I like what I wear.
