Hey guys,
I've been on the forum for sometime now. I guess i'm the ultimate lurker of this forum. I have an s14 and i kinda search for the answer before asking noob questions and getting yelled "SEARCH!!!" I have a 97 s14 base, 4 lug. :coold:
Well, i just bought a vlsd from some guy, and to my limited knowledge, it acts like a welded lsd. VLSD's are suppose to spin freely before the fluid heats and and locks right? With this lsd, if i hold down one side of the LSD and turn the driveshaft part, both side turns at the same time. It doesn't allow any slippage. Is that normal? i took some pictures of the lsd but left the camera in my car. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
Another thing, I don't want to open it up cuz i live in an apartment and carpets and draining fluids don't really go well together. Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks.

your lsd is fine, and a VLSD does not require heat for slipping or both wheels to spin at the same time. it would be hard if not impossible to stop the turning of the wheel on the otherside while the car is jacked up. to see the slipping it would require you to drive the car and make a sharp turn. no noise from the tires are a good indication that it is slipping. coupled with the fact that the wheels spin together when you do a burn out and/or launch, it shows that your LSD is fine. No reason to take it apart, cracka!

i've gone thru a few vlsds between mine and friends cars. They are supposed to act like that. The tighter the better. With an open diff actually when you spin both and hold one, the one you are holding will stay and the other will spin freely. What you are explaining is just a vlsd in good condition.:bigok:

a welded diff on the other hand, you will see the difference when it is mounted on the car. When you take turns, especially low speed turns, you will hear the inside tire on the back of the car squealing as it tries to keep the same speed as the outside wheel. With the vlsd you will hear no noise.

Thanks for the reply guys. VLSD! WOOT!
Another question. Since its a 5 bolt LSD i have to get the J30 axles to make it work right? I'm confused because some people say it has to be pre 95, and some say it doesn't matter. What year axles should i get to make it fit into the s14? And anybody know a good junkyard to source it around the NYC/long island area? :rawk:
