So lately my car has been overheating right? And I kno its cuz I lack coolant. Hence I try not to drive during the day in this forsaken socal heat. I get hungry and go out to get food. Car starts heating up and a lot. So im like fuck and go to a gas station quickly. Chill for a while cuz i know its still hot, finally im able to get my hand on the cap to turn it, so im like
"ok let me turn it slowly just in case, it cant be that hot since Im able to touch..... SPLASH!!!!!!"
fuckin shit shoots up and I jump back, this happen to happen on the busiest fuckin intersection I live on and GOD did I feel stupid. Went in my car to hide my shame, and put in the coolant and jammed.....
my 0.02cents! DONT OPEN THE CAP EVEN IF ITS NOT HOT ENOUGH FOR YOU TO TOUCH!

i did, not much coolant shot up it was mostly pressure buildup.....got all over my shorts and shirt nshit.... and im all handicapped with one arm and a brace that makes me look like a special kid on my right broken arm! WEAK!!!!

LOL.
I always open it slowly, VERY slowly, unless the car is COLD. I don't want to take any chances like that.

You guys are dumbasses. Guess what replaces the coolant when it disappears? AIR. When there is a big ole bubble of air in the system above the low coolant level it will not "feel hot" on the rad. cap. HAHAHAHA but its still presurized!!!! BOOM. HHAHA. Been there done that. Well, my friend did when we were standing around. burned the side of his face, mouth, penis, and got coolant up in the air like a geiser.

lol, its way cooler when you try to pour water into the radiator while its not fully cooled yet and it pours in and then you hear it start to gurgle about 10 sec later and it erupts back out like old faithful lol.
oh and blowing a headgasket on the dyno, pressurizing the cooling system to 25+psi, and having the hose blow off and bukkake 10 people with boiling coolant in the shop is the best hahaha.

Safety pressure release caps are your friend.
I used to have an ill one of those on my radiator. Some jdm cap with a button on top and when you pressed the button it went "TOOOOOOOT!!" like a teapot. But it started leakin so watchagonnado?
chmercer
07-26-2006, 11:23 PM
wtf are you talking about? rofl. teapot cap?
just get the stant cap from autozone or whatever. stant rocks. with the red lever. cars used to come with lever release caps from the factory, i dunno why they stopped putting them on cars. probably because people dont ever open their hoods anyway if there shit is broken anymore.

water = evaporation = release the cap = excessive pressure= GG
Irukandji
07-26-2006, 11:38 PM
water = evaporation = release the cap = excessive pressure= GG
water is more effective in cooling your engine than coolant. besides, you should try to run 50/50 mixture anyway, and water will not evaporate unless it exceeds the pressure inside the cooling system, which is very unlikely.

I'd rather have water blow up over me, then coolant.
The other day, a co-worker was doing a coolant flush, and forgot to tighten the clamps. soooooo yea... coolant in my face, but dont call me coolant face.
Back on Topic:
His car had low coolant. and he was running on only water.
I'm sure that low h20 pressure in that radiator would have evaporated to an excessive preesure that his car was overheating. when he realeases that cap, air preesure has already built up to a centrain psi.
gotta240
07-26-2006, 11:49 PM
I'm not sure if that was a sarcastic flame on the water comment, but he was actually PARTIALLY correct.
100 percent water = almost the best possible cooling, but things will rust
70 percent antifreeze= relatively speaking, bad cooling.
If you want to get all down with your cooling, put ALL WATER, and then go buy a bottle of redline water wetter... It actually helps cool, and i believe is anti corrosive.

It'd still geyser.

you do know if u apply lots of pressure to the cap while slowly turning it, it will force the boiling hot coolant that shot up at u through the line going to the coolant overflow tank, and then you woulda been good. thats kinda what its job is :) to now allow it to overflow, or in your case, shoot everywhere lol glad u didnt get hurt tho

heres how you do it when it comes to emergency overheating. When you get to the gas station, go to the air and water station and put 50 cents in. keep the car running and pop your hood. use the water to cool down the radiator. spray the front of the radiator until you temp down way down. once its cold then get an old shirt or something and put it over the cap and turn slowly. At this point if it overheated a lot then keep sraying the radiator and do not fill yet. If the radiators still too hot then it will boil that fresh water and shout up the opening. All n all use common sense and cool the radiator with the water nozzle at the gas stations. If the original poster would have done this everything would have been cool and there would be no embarassing moments
Eh long post but who cares might save someone from going blind cuz of hot coolant.

that happened to me once. Luckily i had opened the thing with a rag, so it just squirted all over the bay, and all that jazz. i gotta use disstilled water, my koyo needs a good flush and clean.
Anyone got tip on removing rust from radiators?

Anyone got tip on removing rust from radiators?
Get the prestone radiator flush, it's a small yellow bottle that says it'll clean out rust. I used it right after I bought my car, and i have to say, it definetly worked because the water that i drained out of the radiator was brown and poo-like in color after the flush. IIRC, it's $3 at Autozone
Basically just drain radiator, fill up with the flush, top off with water, run engine with heater on full blast until engine comes up to operating temp, shut off, cool down, drain.
haha

uhh wtf thats how u drain?? how about taking out the radiator and putting a hose through the top of it and just letting the water run through it?

there's a draincock in the bottom of the radiator..

wtf im getting my vocabulary all mixed up, no ur right to drain it out thats how u do it, but to flush out the radiator to take out the rust WHICH was what we were talking about, not draining?! you do it my way

lol its called a petcock, not a draincock, hahaha draincock. but yeah dude who wants to drain radiator - just disconnect the lower hose. easy peasy.
no need for goofy radiator cap opening methods, just get the stupid lever release cap, its like 5 bucks or somthing.
and yeah wouldnt reccomend running solid water because itll blow your water pump seals. i run like 85/15 water coolant to lubricate the water pump. next time i fill up im gonna run a bottle of water wetter as well or similar.

Thats a ghetto way...using distilled water will make sure you dont get any dirt/minerals from the hose water in the system.

07-28-2006, 12:03 PM
lmfao @ draincock
yeah just get the damn pressure relief shit whatever lol
IMO it is better to do it like n1sm0r said that way you clean and flush the lines, passages through the block, water pump, etc... but either way about opening it right after driving it, knowing you were low on coolant.....sounds a lil sketchy bro.
trackslut240
07-28-2006, 12:50 PM
drain cock....petcock... rotfl..
been there done that, i used the car jack rod to tap the cap off, but i dont that anymore if it overheats... i will park the car and sleep...:bigok:
the proper way to to a flush would be to attach a tee to the heater hose and do a back flush, i think its the one going into the heater core behind the intake manifold on the firewall, the hose coming from the block to firewall(correct me if i am wrong) this should be done on a cool car, attach a garden hose, flush the old coolant, then start the car with full heat and garden hose running, you will see all the coolant come out from the cap, take out the expansion bottle, clean it out, then just drain and refill with fresh coolant mix 50/50 since its going to be warm mostly, works wonders, dont forget to drain out the bubbles from the coolant in port at engine, very important, be careful
