View Full Version : What exhaust to choose

I have an s13 and i am doing an SR swap. I was looking into what exhaust i wanted to buy and i found that i really liked the sound of the greddy titanium full race. However, it appears that greddy does not make the titanium for the s13. I am looking for recommendations as to exhausts with a similar sound and quality, I particularily love the really low tone. Does anyone know how the Apexi N1 Ex Ti compares?
thanks in advance for your suggestions.
by the way.... i dont want to spend more than about $750, less is always better.

http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=46825 ...has a few different exhaust sounds posted....and fwiw blitz nur spec....I had a custom on my s14 w/a blitz nur spec universal and now I have a blitz nur spec exhaust system on my s13 and I can't say enough good things about it....the custom one sounded good and was cheaper but I like the sound of my s13 exhaust better...just my .02 cents

custom similiar to Buddy Club spec II or similar to Trust DD.
i also have the blitz nur spec on my s13 and it sounds good, but the can itself is pretty big.

honestly, every exhaust on an SR sounds pretty much like the same fukkin thing. Yea, they sound a little different frome each other, but not by much.. untill u move to duals, or something like the apexi WS, or RSR ExMag. Get something cheap, that looks decent. Apexi N1 dual has my vote because it burbles a little bit more than most exhausts. put put put. :P :wiggle:

How loud would a n/a KA be with a high-flow cat, 3" piping and A-spec muffler? I'm thinking of doing this setup but I'm not sure if I should get a resonator or not... Currently I have a ssautochrome dual N1 with stock cat and it's a good sound level. I could handle it a bit louder but not much...
Also, any idea on how the Aspec muffler will sound? Similar to other N1 style mufflers? (HKS HiPower, Apexi N1)?

my suggestion is go with circuit sport dual tip.. it looks stock, very quiet, pretty affordable.. you can get it for about 400 bucks flat, sounds very nice and did i mention it looks STOCK????? hehehe.. i'm just against the grape fruit shooters.. and after i got this i didnt regret a penny.. very much to my liking.. sometimes i dont even remember i have an exhaust its that stock especially when you let it get nice and dirty!
i forgot to mention this is without the cat, with just a resonated test pipe! the exhaust comes with another round resonator on the piping before the actual exhaust can thats obviously bigger then most grape fruit shooter mufflers out there and quiets things nicely.. i dont find my car louder then a stock G35 or a 350z :-)

uhh "looks stock" "very quiet" "fail"
3" pipe and a spec muffler with a cat and no res will sound basically the same loudness as ssa exhaust. good sound.
aspec muffler will sound similar to the other straight through mufflers, hipower n1 jic tanabe yadda its straight through with no baffles so its not gonna alter the sound much

HKS hi-power is nice because its quiet at cruising but at WOT its pretty loud.
dont discount custom stuff though, it can be much better if you really want to drop your car since a lot of aftermarket exhausts hang low and piping scrapes easy under the axel. might be the best choice since you can do whatever the hell u want to it.
but i like my kakimoto GT1.0z exhaust. its deep and loud and has no resonators. and i say screw the po-lice.

i did some calling around and found a shop that does 3 inch aluminum custom piping. my question is, will aluminum be good? because most exhausts are either stainless steel or titanium. Also, depending on their price it may be alot cheaper and similar quality to do custom piping and an aspec muffler than going with a premade made exhaust.

The huge piping size of the Gt spec brought to my mind another question, is 3 inch enough? my power goals are probebly around 4-500 rwhp so will 3 inch be big enough? that might be a reason to go with Apexi...

08-06-2006, 03:37 PM
you'll be fine with 3".. if its a street car, even if you sacrifice a few ponies to be a bit quieter its okay.. btw, as far as clearance is concerned a lot can be fixed with a custom downpipe.. all the jdm downpipes that are mass produced hang so low past the fram rail its not even funny.. when there is so much extra room to be used.. this of course is if you're going custom exhaust... this way you can have the best ground to exhaust clearance compraing to bolt-on exhaust systems out there :-) i would suggest going full stainless if you're going to make it custom.. from piping to flanges.. remember its not going to be cheap at all.. you'll need quite a few bends, and a rather long straight.. flanges and etc.. and not to mention someone that can weld really nice if you want this to last.. otherwise simply go with a bolt on as its simply more cost effective. my 02 cents..

why would you need 400-500hp anyways if the car won't be a track only situation. to me it seems overboard especially, from my experience, those who have dreams of building high HP cars, rarely dwell into setting up the car properly initially and learning the car.
ferris
08-07-2006, 08:22 AM
maybe you are right.....the car will be for mostly street with some track. For the past few weeks i have been looking at all of the other things that really need to go into the car to support that kind of power and maybe it is too expensive and not worth the trouble of building the engine and then building the rest of the car to support it just for the street and some weekend track time....hummm, something to think about.

GT-Spec FTW! It sounds sick connected to my RB25, and its so low and rumbly that the silencer barely helps, so I just leave it off. The great part is that it doesn't have any high pitched, farty, riceyness(sp?) to it. :rawk:
My only regret about it is that it gets so close to the ground that I'm afraid to lower my car much for fear of destroying it while street driving. :wtc:

ok im the forth who support Apexi GT-spec!! i personally think it has the best sound among all the exhausts with SRs. its loud, but in a very very very deep unique tone. i can say its not that notisable when driving in daytime with open traffic around. but when u drive in mid-night without traffic or indoor parking thas another story. u can hear me from 5th floor while im entering in ground floor...thas where the silencer comes in handy...
right now im still debating whether i should put on my silencer or leave it...i really hard for me to choose. (i live in Cali)
u live in Ohio, so get a GT-spec, its only cost like $6XX

09-27-2006, 04:57 PM
just get wutever u like. almost all exhausts are under 750 unless u go with titanium or something rare that has to be specially imported. dart izumi, kakimoto, BEE-R etc...
GP sports, apex GT, kakimoto GT, anything with relatively strait piping and no resonators is going to be pretty deep/gurgly..or like a bunch of ppl said, custom. custom will let u choose ur piping so that it doesnt hang too low to the ground and scrape over driveways and speed bumps (if your that low)
mine scrapes on a lot of speedbumps, custom piping would have prevented that.

I have had 7 240's and heard every exhaust possible. The ones that have a smooth sound are the apex WS, Hks legalmax, blitz realize tt, and the circuit sport DT. All those are 3" piping and are mostly under 95dB. Now, if you want loud go with the apex dual n1, Hks hi-power, and tanabe concept g. Tell me what you choose when you buy it.

Apex N1 Dual is quiet as shit!!!
Loud: Kakimoto Racing FTW!! Or custom w/ resonator, no cat, no muffler!!! That was loud too.
Awesome: JIC Bullet. Fucking awesome sound, not loud, not quiet, just nice quality, almost no bends, and awesome...
Of course, just for ease, price, and able to be customized how you want, just get a nice muffler (like A-Spec) and take it to a nice exhaust shop, get them to make you nice 3 inch mandrel bent piping, and drive away less poor and happy.

IMP, Greddy exhaust have very nice tone compares to some other brands, even if Greddy dont make the full Ti exhaust for S13 its other type of exhausts may have nice tone too. I used Greddy on my 95 Integra before and now i have Greddy Full Ti on my S14 and i love the tone of both of these exhausts. They are kinda deep and loud but sound pretty aggressive but i like it. i have seen other S14 using Apex exhaust and its much quieter than Greddy. Just my two cents.

I have the 3" exhaust from Intense Motorsports. $275 shipped, and comes with a removeable silencer. Nicely angled too. I wanted to get the HKS Hi-Power, but had this one recommended to me, and I like the sound on the KA24. Here is a sound clip of it on my roommates car with a Catco High Flow cat.
