here's what I use mostly adobe stuff:
general timeline stuff: Premiere or Final Cut (I like em both)
special effects: After Effects
image/text manipulation: photoshop (sometimes used to create special graphics)
sound editing: Audition

I use the following.

@ work:

Video editing / capturing : Final Cut Pro HD
Special effects / Motion Graphics : Adobe After Effects
3d : Alias Maya 6.5

@ home

Video Editing : Testing out Avid Liquid and Sony Vegas 6.

Vegas 6 is a bit hard to use after becoming so used to Final Cut. Final Cut is an extremely easy to use interface, works fast on a G5, but is pretty expensive.

Vegas 6 and Avid Liquid can be had for around 500$ I believe. I'll post up more of a review after further use.

Pinnacle Studio blah.

I have not seen many people that need more than Windows Movie Maker or iMove for home production.

Final Cut Pro, Premier and Avid are great products. But, they are total overkill for most peoples cut only productions. I haven't seen any car video on the web or most auto DVD's out there that could have easily been produced on iMove w/iDVD.

To assume you're on a PC. Get a book on WMM and start to use it. There are a lot of features in it that are not entirely obvious. Same with iMovie. I've seen some good projects done on them. You just got to know how to use them.

I like adobe premiere, it's easy to use and fairly versitile. I could never compress anyting well with it though. Used 3rd party programs for that.

Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Avid Express here.
but like someone else mentioned, i also used mixed programs to do certain things. After Effects for the special effects. Final Cut/Premiere for general timeline stuff, Audition for sound editing, etc...

wait till you mess around with Shake
