Hi guys, I have a bit of a problem with my S14 SR20DET. I live in Malta, its a small island in europe and there is no one that can tune these cars (as there are only 9 registered on the island).

i'm the type of person who does not keep a car standard! So I bought the car abour 2 years ago. Then I spun a bearing and totalled the engine. So I decided to make a rebuild, and said once I'm doing this, I'll go all out. Here are the mods on engine at the moment...

HKS 262 in & exh with 11.5 lift
Cometic metal head gasket 1.6mm
polished / balanced / lightened crank
polished head
JE pistons / JE piston rings
GTI-R rods w/ ARP rod bolts
Sard R2D2 bov
3" tubo back exhaust
255 walbro pump
10 psi boost
Apexi intake
Greddy t/t

To be fitted is the FPR.

That's what I can think of! Now the problem is that when I start the car, there is a realld bad smell of fuel, even when driving. Now last night, I went for a small drive, then when I parked, the car started leaking fuel from under the front bumper! I know the car runs very rich (last I checked, it was running about 3 bar at the fuel rail).

Another thing is that under 2500 rpm, the car has no power, and it really works badly (like when the car is misfiring). Also, the fuel gauge is not working. This happened when the installed the fuel pump! can this be fixed?

Any one has any idea what could be done to save my car??? Cause if I don't fix it, I think I'll sell it, and that's the last thing I'd want to do :(

Any help is appreceated.

Thanks

Matt

it smells like raw fuel? then you probably have a leak somewhere. as for the fuel guage not working, double check your fuel pump installation.

Yeah, that's what it smells like! it smells like when you go to a pump station and there is the smell coming out of the pumps, but really strong and in the car!

I'll recheck the fuel pump installation.

Thanks

It doesn't have to do much with the install if you did it correctly. Part of the fuel gauge system is in the fuel tank and they do come out of place on S14s. It's hard to get to and put back in place while the gas tank is on the car.

As for raw fuel, definately a leak. Check ALL your lines. If its by the bumper, check the black canister or the lines running to it if you took the canister out. There is a breather tank in the fuel tank that lets air out. If the little box comes apart or falls in the fuel tank, fuel will run to the front of the car to the line where the canister is. The little box inside should be placed on the ceiling of the fuel tank.

I spoke to my mech. and he'll be passing by on Saturday. I'm really pissed off, casue on the 28th of this month, I was booked for a dyno run! Now I can't even drive my car :( In about 2 weeks, I should have the FPR fitted, and I think this would help for fueling. I was also thinking about getting an Apexi SAFC II, but I'm not sure if it will help. What do you guy think?

I wanted to ask an other question.

I didn't change the valvetrain on my car, and not even cam gears. Do you think if I fit these the car would run smoother?

About EMS.

What do you guys think of the Apexi power fc with access to the laptop to tune it?

Thanks for your help.

PS: sorry for all the questions, but here in Malta, no one has ever tuned and S14!

Go straight to the EMS over SAFC. Did you read my post? My friend had the same problem with his S13. Go take a peek.

so you are running all the mods with no management whatsoever?

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. I think I'll be getting the Apexi Power FC, cause a friend of mine just found me one and would cost me about $560.

No, I dodn't read your post. can you give me the link pelase?

Thanks.

Basically, yes. I'm running the mods with no engine managment what-so-ever!

I know it's really bad, but I ended up in a situation where everything came at once, and I was broke! I had just got a new appartment, building the Nissan and doing up the Civic.

What EMS would you suggest. I think I'll be going for the Apexi, but I'm still open for options. A friend of mine also suggested Haltec ems or luminition and Motec. The only thing that I didn't like about them, is that you have to rewire the ECU, and I don't really feel like going through that trouble.

What do you think?

Thanks.

What I would suggest is don't a SAFC or EMS buy based on reputation, but buy based on who can tune it for you. Think about it, you are already on a small island, and you aren't going to ship your car to get it tuned, so be smart about this. Just get something that someone has experience tuning. I mean people already have hard enough time looking for tuners in the states. Good luck. Personally I run an emanage with a profec-e01. I would take it over most EMS's, but that IMHO.

On top of all that, those cams are to big to run without stiifer springs.

find the leak, fix it, take the pump back out and make sure that you didnt damage the sending unit wires when you installed the pump. then take the head back off and put the springs in like you should have in the first place. Lastly send your ecu out for a base tune (good luck with shipping cost) and get a safc to fine tune. You gotta pay to play homie!

That'e what I'm going to do. I know that the Apexi is used quite a lot here, but only on rx7s and Glanzas.

Although they are not that tuned up, they are very powerful. They managed to push about 300bhp from a 1.3 turbo! It's amazing what they can do here on this small island.

When there are competitions for the 1/4 mile, Malta always comes first. At the momen't we have the fastest Truck and fastest dragster, which does it under 6 sec!

On Saturday, my mechanic is coming to my house to check out the car for me. Now I'll fix the pump, order the stiffer springs and get an EMS.

Next week I'm suppose to take the car to a dyno to check in what state it is. I'll keep you posted on how the car ends up.

Thanks alot guys for helping out.

Make sure your motor can handle all the pressure.
