I think it's really awesome that we have a Pro-Comp series now, and that after the N.H. Formula D qualifier it will be the only way to get into FD. It should have been this way much earlier. I hope that we get enough spectators watching so we can show them real honest drifting, rather than the "drift racing" that's being shoved down everyone's throats lately.
Hopefully the Formula D name on the pro-am will bring some exposure to the drivers that are the backbone of the drift community.

Good points Yuri!

Yep, this is the whole goal of the series... not all of the unfound talent can land those big sponsors and trek their asses all over the US. This way anyone can get recognized in their region and make a name for themselves... even playing field no matter what!!!

Davis, I'm not too sure what you're talking about here. The practice for each driver has not been decided yet and neither has the number of driver's per run group. Did someone tell you this was the case cuz it's news to me and I'm the one hosting the event?

We're going to give all of the drivers the most practice time possible before the competition, but keep in mind this is a competition not an open practice.

We are not working with the same time constraints as Driftshowoff... the cut will be better for all competitors. Don't worry, I put on events to make the drivers as happy as possible... We're not a marketing/events co.

well i just looked at the rules on the db website and did some math....(looking at my post now, i was way too tired from writing my essay last night cus i did the math wrong lol.. )

i saw 60 drivers max on the my auto events page.. on the schedule it states.. 10:30am – 1:30pm Open practice (Each group will get one hour of practice). This is 3 hours so i assume 3 groups. 60drivers/3 = 20 people per group, so 20 people are allowed to practice for 1 hour before competition.

this is of course if all 60 drivers sign up...

so ya i dont make the rules of course, i was just assuming the worst case senario, sorry for confusing anyone

George and Xander can slide the bank (pre-remodel) with mostly stock sohc engines. It was wild to see, since then many regulars of altamont have mastered the technique.

Perhaps its less difficult to drift now that the track is slippy..:boink:

CleanS14
08-01-2006, 09:37 PM
Yah I'm aware of what George, Xander and Sonny can do out there at AMP... but I wouldn't say it's less difficult to drift not that it's slippery... might be harder cuz there is a certain amount of grip involved.

We shall see on the 26th won't we!!!

santacruisin
08-02-2006, 03:39 PM
sliding the whole bank is definately for experienced drivers only!! Even then disaster strikes (*cough* Al *cough*). For noobs like me its better to initiate at the white line at the bank exit and work your way back from there. Even though I had little track time on the bank (group C got shafted big time) I still found myself initiating earlier in the bank as the day went on.

The tsuisou rounds are gonna be funny cuz andrenaline is gonna take over and people are gonna go beyond their abilities. Should make for some good crash pics!

If the car is done in time... and I get a chance to shake it down; then yes, I will compete in another regional event. Man, I don't build show cars... althought they might look like it... they're all purpose built.

As for drifting against me in it... that's IF you and I were to make top8 at the same comp... they way things are going who knows if I'll make the next Pro-Am event.

Rather than plauge this thread with irrelevant info... I'll just leave it at... if we were in the domestic hot rod market... YES!!! But we're in the import market... the EVER SO CHEAP import market!!!

Yes Nick was there, I left at 5, but people were doing fairly well. A corolla was gripping the whole way, and one kid trailored his 240 to the event only to enter turns at 20 mph and initiate a drift only to end up in a 180.

Overall great event.

I don't necessarily call it hate, just displaying ones frustration with the industry especially a grassroot oriented sport like drifting. I thought you actually had to be good to get sponsored, now all you need is a famous last name and your own reality show.

Its easy to say "yea lets just treat him like everyone else" "hes just like one of us" but in all reality he isn't. And its not like he has no choice, like run what you brung and hes forced to drive a 600 horsepower custom suspension viper. He chose to go with all that, and yea I enjoy laughing at the fact a privateer with the fraction of horsepower and suspension mods placed above him.

BTW, I hope no one had a problem with the music played in the later part of the day...that was me...

I don't call it hate either, I call it jealously, lack of dignity and respect. For a kid that has been drifting for only four months he's doing very well in my opinion. Even though that car is Sam Hubinettes or Mopar's it has some problems. The suspension is off. He crashed it a few weeks ago and the frame was bent 6 inches. They pulled it out but it's not driving straight. The front wheel is rubbing into the lower control arm.

btw, nick hogan did ok. he still lacks the skill and experiance to place top honors, but at least he's still going out there and trying.

does it matter that he has a ready race prepped car? yeah it hurts our feelings, but who cares its not like he's dominating the scene. did you happen to see that FULL race stock car that was trying to qualify? what about the full race rx7 sa22 that tried to qualify?

pat still is on top, end of discussion.

i didn't hear any of the top 8 drivers complain that nick hogan was using a viper did you?

funny we're discussing this because one of the mopar team was commenting to me how there was a full tube chassis stock car competing, then i say to him, "well, in proam, we have cars like this 600hp viper racing against my daily driven little corolla. the rules are pretty flexable out here."

Seriously man, a stock car set up for oval racing and a SA22 built for road course action isn't anything to be compared to Viper that's built strictly for drift that's currently holding the number 2 spot in FD. I wouldn't expect a stock car or a SA22 to do good in comp anyways.

And yea, I don't really think any of the other top 8 guys would have a reason to complain either, most of them are running cars with half the technology, I would pat my self on the back. But I do feel that most of those top 8 guys in that very same viper would dominate better then hogan.

In order for me to respect hogan I would have to see him in a different car. A rolla or a S chassis, but I doubt we will see that even if they took away his sponsorship. And its hard for me to believe that car is hard to drift problems or not, Sam. H earned top 8 with that car with a new motor. And all the problems with it were caused by nicks crash or crashes :D .

But don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Nick Hogan. I don't know if hes a real competitor or just a trendy fan that will be done competing when the next big thing comes around(he was trying to get into NHRA before he saw drifting). But I do know one thing, hes living every single 16 year olds fantasy by drifting the mopar dodge viper.

I blame mopar, there in a race for a formula D championship and there lending there competition car out too some new booty drift kid that has never had any experience in competition. At least lend the car out too someone with more experience, some who has been running there own car in comp for some time now, someone who deserves it.

I like pat and hogan though, I don't think hogan will get his licence this year so I'm looking forward to competing against both of them next year.

You really got to give it up for Martin Cromwell.
a day before the event he crashed his car and totally messed up the suspension, and broke the bead on three tires.
He camps out at the junkyard the morning of the event, and fixes the suspension links just enough to make the car drivable. He shows up right before tech closes, and barely gets in.
He had blown coils, and a stock KA, and sucked during practice.
Then during qualifying, he starts pulling these awesome runs out of nowhere, qualifying first, and ends up taking fourth in the event. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

and still couldn't get top 8 for the 2nd elimination.

I think there was only 17/18 got had a score from the first elimination. :(

Al, is the course that hard to drive or is it just the level of drivers in norcal at the moment? Anybody get any video of the top runners?

Chris, the course isn't hard to drive... it took Calvin Wan 4 runs to get it right... it's the track surface that is tricky. It's very inconsistent... slippery and grippy in different areas. Your entry and line like any course had to be on point or there was a fat chance you would be able to recover. It was just difficult for everyone to get used to it that hasn't run the course before. I'm sure you would've done fine over time... but the less experienced drivers were unable to adjust with limited practice runs.

I'm waiting for video myself... some of the guys like Martin, Yuri, Lance and Mario might have better input here.

Yuri
08-28-2006, 04:55 PM
The course layout wasn't bad at all, it was pretty fun to drive actually.
The only difficulties I saw/experianced were finding the right place to initiate in a low-power car to carry enough speed to link into the technical section, and with hi-power cars coming in too fast and shooting off the track.
The inconsistent track surface did mess up alot of people though. You could see Calvin get caught off guard on his demo runs by varying track surfaces.
It got me too, I nailed my second qualifying run, and then hit a slippery spot right at the exit and spun.:Owned:

I don't know what was up with a lot of the drivers, the majority were driving much better cars than Martin and I (mine was bone stock with a weak clutch and no ebrake, and martins was just seriously jacked) but struggling with the course. I saw alot of understeer and spins, maybe the reverse layout was messing up norcal people? Case in point, Luke should have been dominating, but he spun every run.
EDIT: just read Luke's post, that would explain the problems he had.
Maybe someone who's familar with the track can give some input.

My car was being effected from conrads crash. I was able to get it alligned, but after cross measuring the chassis, it turns out the passenger side front strut tower is 1" higher, 3/4" rearward, 1" diag, than the drivers side.

I was having problems trying to adjust to it, feels like the car is on 3 wheels. I was able to pull off some ok runs in practice, but nothing that was on par with sonny or some of the other guys out there.

Congrats to Sonny, your the man!! I hope you get picked up by some huge team, and get to do this professionally.

Congrats to Dan. I have never seen you drive like that. Good goin man!

I hope that i can get my chassis pulled and all back in shape for the next event. I think i would have been very competitive if it was running ok, but hey i still had a blast seeing everyone, burning some tires, and watching all you guys kick ass.

Also i had the chance to hang out with Nick Hogan on friday, He is a very cool person. I was skeptical at first, but after hanging out with him on friday, i was very impressed. Its rare to meet people that have that type of life style, but are still regular people. Nicks mom is also super cool, i hope Nick can get some more seat time, and kick ass.

I was workin the entry booth, sorry for being a dick!

I was surprised when Nick came to the booth and sign in, as well as his entourage of 15 people. He looked normal, not what i was expecting. It woulda been different if his dad came up tho hahaha, i woulda froze. Then i told him "you're entitled to 2 people to get in free, and you're on the VIP for 3 more, that makes 5, i need 10 bucks each for any extra" just like everyone else. of course they didn't have to pay for the extra people, AMP had it covered. This event had more media than Formula D!

Thanks to Jay, Al, Mark, Drift Association, and all the volunteer staff people for a great event!

Congratulations to Sonny, definitely deserves it!

i would have to say the course layout was not difficult, but not easy either.

the course was moderate. but on the easy side. if you are comfortable with being sideways the course should be a no brainer, not to say that you will kill every run, but you will be able to pull off some ok drifts.

the course is definately tricky!!! if you were NOT at the correct lines you will have one hell of a hard time getting to the correct location. the course has a lot of elevation changes that really throw a driver off if you aren't sideways on throttle.

a lot of the guys i saw out there were definately comming in too hot, but the whole issue of that, which i learned later on in the day is that if you do not initiate at the correct location for your car, and at the right angle you will fly off track. it is as easy as that. the course did require the driver to have experiance to pull off a good initiation.

i would say the top 4-5 drivers were going in mid to top of 3rd gear, so you have to imagine speeds between 70-90mph!!! it took me a lot of balls to try to attempt a 3rd gear run a few times, but at the helm of a stock seat i was being flung around causing miss shifts.

definately not a difficult course, but for the beginner it must have seemed like one of the hardest tracks they've ever seen.

this track also requires the driver to have a well setup car. not to say it has to be race ready, but traction, alignment, and tires have to be well thought out.

calvin took 4-5 runs to get the track down. it took me 3 runs. calvin is in a race prepped car that is formula d ready, and i'm in a street driven corolla. to say it outright, the course wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. samwell got the track down in like 1-2 laps.

i did definately say before i drove the track that it was intimidating and i didn't think i could do it. once i drove the track a few laps though, it was getting easier and easier.

All i know is that it sounds like there are a few people including you (vision) that seem to be tooting their own horn a little much. Have a little modesty.

Daily driven low power car or Formula D spec car, it doesn't matter. All that matters is what you are comfortable driving. Most importantly, good judges take into consideration your handicaps, so when it comes to competitions, it's not all about the car you are in. BTW, congratulations on the third place finish and I hope you don't take what I said in a negative manner.

Alright here's my input on the track. But first let me tell you who I am since most of you dont know. I'm Mario and I was driving Casper's car for the Pro-Am event. The course layout was excellent, good for low powered cars and good for high powered cars. For some reason I didn't really "feel" the change in grip from the asphalt on that track. I was too busy cussing myself out perhaps. I started out in practice by just trying to figure out the car and the track, if most of you remember I didn't do much of anything during practice. During qualifying I decided that I would enter at full throttle in 3rd gear and initiate on the start/finish line. I was almost on top of third at that point. During Top 16...simply put...I fucked up. No need for excuses or reasons.
Congrats to the Top 8, and especially those moving on to the Nationals!

That car is still far from being finished.

You can't rush art. It took DaVinci 4 years to complete the "Mona Lisa".

I'll tell you what tho, the brakes alone on my car will make you cry.

Myself or anyone in my crew wasn't filming the event, but I did see a gazillion cameras so perhaps some footage will pop up soon.

sonny had the badest fucking run of the day. i have it on video. he entered from the god damn FINISH line on the oval!

very clean run, there is no reason why he should not have won 1st place.

sonny is indeed good, hills as well. scary what that guy can do in the hills.

No pics yet... we had some good media out there... VH1, Drifting Magazine, Running-Free.org, JSJBrothers.com and some others that I'm sure will post up here and on other forums.

What's with all the hate towards Nick though... seriously if his driving warranted 1st he would've got 1st.

:duh: From what I could tell Drifting Mag was NOT there, but Drift & RWD Sport Magazine WAS. :D

uhh, i never said anything about sonny.

but sonny is probably pushing double the power i'm pushing. but don't be childish and bring this up to a debate when i never said anything about sonny.

he did WIN didn't he? so what credit are you talking about?

don't be childish? wtf are you talking about? you had said that your stock seat didn't hold you very well and that your car wasn't setup perfectly. great. I'm saying that Sonny HAS the same challenges and managed to pull of the win. I don't think that I'm acting childish WHATSOEVER....so I don't know where you pulled that card from....

Anyways, as I said in my post:
"sorry buddy, im not trying to flame, I'm just tryin to give Sonny some well deserved credit!"

apparently you didn't understand when I said "I'm not trying to flame". This means that from what I said in my earlier post that you SHOULD NOT take offense to what I had said in my post. My post was NOT about YOU, what it WAS about IS SONNY. Seems like you are the childish one, looking for some online e-thuggery. Get over it, NOTHING bad was said about you.

Yes, Sonny did win this BIG competition AND he also won the Falken Drift showoff last year as well. I dunno if you remember that...

anyways, I'm sure you will have another name-calling response. Which, by the way, makes YOU look childish, not I. :D

EDIT: one more question. Does your car have to be formula D legal for the nationals?

when i was manning the front booth near the end of the night...cool cool jetta guy was leaving, sped from the pits to the three cones and did a slalom dealie to the right of the cones and got pretty close to hitting me, brandon, and slonie...blasting music and trying to look all hard when passing...ban his ass from AMP...

good job to all that competed...it was a fun event even though i didnt look like i was enjoying it from being exhausted, but im always happy to help out...props to jay, naoki/drift association, and all the help/staff for hosting a smooth successful event...

Anyone get some video of balls out runs where people went straight (no manji) full throttle into a long slide or were people not doing that? Mario, you better have tried that shit or your a pussy even if you were in another man's car. No excuses. AHAHHAAA. BTW, that course looks super fun. Perfect for a drift comp. Man I wish I could have gone. So jealous.

How fast were your entries when you just went straight?

visi0n
08-31-2006, 03:37 PM
the judges said "strictly no manji on the straight."

also, "if you drift the straght, you better have ZERO correction. if you make one little correction that is a ZERO score"

Lance F, pulled off a nice drift from far in the straght. that was his qualifying run.

Yah Chris, we wish you there there too... well at least I do... I wanted to see some of that no lift gangsta entry action you lay down...

Anyways like Barry said... there were no manji entries allowed into T1. If anyone has Sonny, Lance F, Martin, Kid Pat or Mario's runs you'll see some cool long slide action... though Mario was using sidebrake entry which I think the judges thought was kinda :ghey:

But fast entries were between 70-80mph usually.

hattenDriftR1

I had to settle for sidebrake initiation. For some DAMN reason that car did not want to get sideways when I clutch kicked in 3rd gear. Most likely just me, honestly I felt extremely rusty and out of it the whole day. I cant remember the last time I had to drive like that...maybe back in July......2005, at DriftFest.
