hey im runnin a welded and have been for about 3 months and am very dissapointed with the tire wear. before i got it welded ppl said it wouldnt be that much worse but it RAPED my tires to all hells end. so basically ive been thinking of finally making the push to a 2way clutch type LSD in an attempt to save tires. what im asking will my tread wear a good amount slower with a 2way then a welded or is it about the same?

I suppose it would depend on how you drive.

depends how you drive... 2way will help out tirewear a small amount... but its not going to be like a VLSD or open diff...

why did you put a welded diff in your car? the only reason, logically, that i can think of is for drifting....considering that you mentioned a 2-way diff. now, when one performs the act of drifting it wears their tires down....
so lets follow the simple logic steps here:
installed welded diff to drift
tires got worn out
started bitching about tire wear
this makes me think that you daily drive your drift car. now if you go to track events, why not just get a 2nd diff and change it out before/after track events? dont go to track events you say? so that means you must drift on the street, which opens up a whole new can of worms.
all in all, you installed a part on a car that just doesnt make sense to be on a street car. dont complain about worn out tires. i have changed my tires 30+ times in the last 2-3 years from daily driving on a welded diff. get over it, move on.

Joe has said everything that needs to be said.
Nub: Stop whining, you purchaced a diff for drifting, and when you drift it kills your tires. Deal with it or swap in an open.

hrm... how do you know he got the welded diff for drifting??? getting a welded diff is the new popular thing to do... my guess since he is complaining about how his tire wears out so fast, he just followed the new popular trend.

lol.
If you think about it just a little bit logically, you can answer your own question. Welded = both tires spin at the same rate all the time. So what happens every time you turn? The Inside wheel will spin the same distance but travel less meaning it is slipping = tire wear.
2 Way locks up when it experience certain torque so it might not lock up "every time" you turn, so yes it will help with your tire wear situation.
never seen un even tire wire with welded.
welded is the shit. consistancy for life :)

There are only 2 reasons i can think of (logically of course) for having a welded differential
1)you drift.
2) you drag race with a lot of power going to the ground
either way, it shouldnt be welded on a DD vehicle.... well if you do a lot of city driving that is... highway driving, whatever floats ur boat. I wonder what would happen if you were to hydroplane with a welded diff? lol
The faster crowd at the SCCA road race events usual run locked diffs.
And drag racing takes a little more skill with a welded diff.

Welded diffs and 2 ways are for DriftNinjas. TougeNinjas -> hlsd, 1.5 or at least vlsd.
I ran a welded diff for about a month, sucked monkey balls for daily.

I just put in a welded diff on my s13 fastback and it rips! I can see how the welded diff will wear tires out faster than a 2 way (this not considering any drifting). I have a kaaz 2 way in my s13 coupe and I notice a difference when making tight turns and parallel parking, it chatters a bit but no tire chirp like the welded diff. The cool thing about a welded diff is it cost me 50 bucks to weld and 10 bucks in fluid where as the kaaz=950 bucks + 40 bucks in fluid. Since the welded diff is locked 100 percent of the time the car starts to slide out earlier at lower rpm too. This winter should be interesting.

And those are NOT street cars.
Welded diffs are application specific, and aren't too bad for drifting.
For street driving, they are no good.
For auto-x, they are no good.
For road racing...there are better options, only broke-ass cheap-asses run a welded diff.

yeah, i don't know why you'd get a welded diff without thinking about the ramifications
i would imagine you shoudl just run crappier, high wear tires instead of burning up any performance rubber on the street when you're not trying to drift.

These welded diff convos
are for the kids

buy some 360+ tire wear rating. They should last longer.
2way vs locked freeway/highway driving there will be NO difference.
Maybe if you drove city 90 degree corners every damn day of your life. Then yes it would make minimal difference.
And orion.
the national SCCA GT2 Champion for his 5th or 6th championship, has run a locked diff.
And for the record people who want a locked diff but there are none made for the diff they have. They weld it to accomplish the same affect. Its not being cheap if thats what they want it.

I've owned vlsd, r33 clutch type, 2 way, and im currently running a welded.
2 way and welded definetly show a lot more tire wear especially if you live in city areas with a lot of tight turns and intersections. but seriously.. this topic has been covered 100000x times

Have you gotten your alignment checked? You know that will wear tires out fast too.
Anyway, welded isn't as horrible for daily like most people think. If you want slightly better tire life, get a 2way, it does allow alittle slip at slow speeds. If you are going to drift alot though and are on a limited budget, a 2 way isnt for you. 2ways= change diff oil alot. Welded done right=very minimal diff fluid changing. They are both good in effect, its up to you.
Keep in mind though, once you adapt to how it acts it won't be as bad to drive.

yeaaaaa. i think ill keep my welded then and or get it rewelded by a that guy who does the weldlocs sooner or later. time to go spend that money on a seat and clutch :D. thanks guys, i was suspecting all that shit but i was just hopin some one had driven both and seen a difference thx.

WTF? Why would you get it rewelded if it's still holding up?

Yeah, if it broke and became and open diff, your tire wear issue would be taken care of.

^^ kinda. if it broke, his shit would be all fucked up. I doubt the spider gears would interlock like they normally would. but yea, his tire wear would be decreased cause he wasnt driving his car anymore. :keke:

correct. i would rather have a diff that i know is bullet proof other then some welds that will most likely grenade on me on sum back road were i have no phone service.
