i have the jvc deck with the 3 inch lcd on it, its pretty cool but for decks, it doesnt really matter hwat you get as long as it plays mp3s. but for subs and speakers i suggest the MTX line of subs.

depends on what you are going for?
Do you care about sound quality (listens to highs alot) or are you into all the punk, rave, etc music.
Speaker selection can be difficult, because basically you can choose from a sea of stuff.
I like seperates up front, and the rear doesn't matter as long as they are not blown. If you get seperates up front, you will need an amp (not off the HU). Something in the line of 50 rms x 2 (front only) and then ur golden.
Headunit wise, it's really what you like to look at. Don't get any of them low end stuff, because after bouncing around in a lowered car, the CD pickup will be non-existant, meaning you can't listen to CD's. So get something in the $300 range would be best advised.
If you got any best buy gift cards racked up, go to best buy and get the Top of the line apline deck offered, and they will warranty the install and the deck for something like 3 years. Meaning if it's broken bring it back to them.

I'd say go into your local stereo shops, like best buy and circuit city, play around with all the head units and see which you are most comfortable with. Then go read all the reviews online and see what others have to say about it. Basic MP3 deck can run as cheap as 150, but a top of the line can run up to 600. If you're gonna spend 600 for a CD/MP3 player, you might as well get a DVD player. Otherwsie, just go ahead, take the average, and spend somewhere between 200-300. Most of the big chains have free same day installation. Or if you are a do it yourselfer, i'd recommend Crutchfield. They have decent prices and their customer support is exceptional.
Just sample as much as possible before buying because as much as anybody says about a product, as long as you like it, isn't that what really matters?

I suggest (and am putting in my car with my Circuit city employee discount) kicker speakers and an eclipse head unit. That is pretty much the best sound quality you'll get for a decent price. here's a few goods/bads:
Good (worth the money):
eclipse
alpine
pioneer (pretty decent)
Decent (not bad, but they do have some issues):
panasonic
jvc
sony
Bad:
jensen
durabrand
etc.

ah, durabrand, king of my $50 headunit, my $10 toaster, and my $5 automatic can opener.

I think durabrand is owned by audiovox (just like jensen)... audiovox is the parent company to like 50 low-end electronics brand names...sweet!
As far as speakers go, either 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 will fit fine...i've had both in my car. 6 1/2 will play more of the lower frequency sounds, although they still won't hit the lows a sub would... kicker, eclipse, polk, infinity, all are good speakers. go with pioneers or sonys or the like if you want an upgrade but you're on a tighter budget. let me know if you have questions, i do this for a living at CC so I'll help as much as I can.

Check here www.caraudioforum.com
There are a bunch or different higher end brands that cant be purchased at places like best buy and circuit city.
My budget setup in the s14 is:
Alpine cda-9851
cdt cl-6ex all around
Directed 750d
Image dynamics ID12 d4 w/ 1cu ft sealed enclosure.

^^ sounds like a good budget setup...
I recently sold my subs (2 12" JL w3v2) but still have my Alpine 9855 deck and Infinity Kappa component set up front. Right now I'm running the component set off the Alpine deck which does it no justice. Honestly it sounds very weak and lacks midbass. The highs are good, maybe a bit harsh, but good.
Many people say that the newer Alpine's are no good because of the glide touch scroll bar but i've had no problems with mine. Maybe a little tough to use while driving but no problems with the deck. But for the budget minded, definately pioneer or alpine.
For speakers, I've heard great things about CDT audio but don't have any personal experience. I would recommend getting a component set but you would have to do a custom installation for the tweeter. If you like your highs really bright, go with a metal dome tweeter. If you don't like the highs too harsh, go with a silk dome tweeter.
As for rear speakers, many people like to leave it empty or run anything cheap off of the head unit power just for "rear fill". Something to do with better sound imaging or something... Like all audio, this is personal preference. I personally like rear fill.

I agree with Jason, alpine use to be the ish, but now a days when I was checking out what they had to offer, it wasn't as groundbreaking as what they use to do. I wouldn't say they got worse, it's just that they hit a plateau.
Now all the other companies have cought up and are showing what they have to offer.

thanks for the info. ok so does that mean i can actually install my rockford 51/4 speakers in the front w/o any problems cause i did take the panel off but it seems too small to the correct fitment and seems like i need a braket but if i have a set of 6 1/2 well it be exact fitment w/o needing a braket ? and also i have picked up a set of 6 1/2 HERTZ speakers ever heard of them supposly they are gonna get big in the US thyre made in Italy n its supposly be the father of POLK or sumthing like tha thank again

I know my setup isn't in a 240sx yet... but what i have so far:
Alpine 9831 head unit
Alpine MRP-M350 amp (350 rms, 700 peak)
Alpine type-r 12 incher
Tweeters: stock
Front speakers: 6.5 stocks
Rear speakers: 6x9 stocks
My setup isn't done, but i dont plan putting any more money into it until i get my 240sx, and it serves it's purpose just fine. I can blast the bass like all teh riceboys and i can listen to rock, classic, wtv floats your boat and it will sound good on this system. It has the flexibility of beeing clean, and being able to have alot of base. This is definitly not a "cheap" setup for say, but it is my first, and I wanted to do it right the first time around.
*EDIT* I forgot to say that my head unit is like 2-3 years old, i got it used off of one of my buddies who goes through sound systems like crazy.

Pioneer makes one of the best headunits out there.. I don't know what you're thinking. :loco:
Show me an Alpine that has Mp3/CD/DVD/Navigation/Vehicle Dynamics all in one.
I'll show you a Pioneer that does.

Pioneer Head Unit + JL Audio Speakers and Amps = Win.
That's what I used to sell, and the only thing I will put in my vehicle now.

i understand what you mean Ritz, im just not a big fan of dvd players in decks. i just know that back when i used to install stereos pioneer was a joke, i fell in love with alpine (since i couldnt get an eclipse anywhere in my small hometown) and never looked back. pioneer just left a bad taste in my mouth that i never got over. im glad that you like yours though.

Alpine does make one of the highest watt output units available. 60x4 IIRC, but RMS wise it's putting out ~27x4.
"Back when..." Alpine was the shit. They were awesome headunits for the money. But nowadays, since Alpine has that "fame", they lack on quality, and improve on quantity. When people buy Alpine today, it's because of their yesterday reputation.
Also about 10 years ago, Rockford Fosgate use to be THE amps and subs to get. Now, they're just mediocre equipment. Same with MTX, but opposite. MTX used to be garbage 10 years ago, now they make great amps, and subs.
Back to Pioneer, their amps/subs hold the record for highest Db record.
Point? Things don't always stay the same.

yeah i understand what you are sayin Ritz. I am actually in the market for a new deck now, i got about 400 to spend on it. Maybe ill give Pioneer a try, one of my clients is a stereo shop, wonder if he will give it to me at cost if i throw some free spots his way. hmmmmmm

Kenwood KDC-X890 ($270)
I got that installed in my 1990 240sx.
Best I could find in my price range before going to more expensive dvd/nav systems.
Alpines don't have motorized faces, what are they thinking?!
Eclipse are too expensive for what features they give.
Pioneer's used to be too simple (got crossovers yet?) haven't looked at them in awhile. Their nav one is one of the best, I was looking at that, but way out of my $$$ range.
One of these to go with it for my mp3s:

They're lower end sub $200 doesn't really give you anything. You have to break the $279 range to get anything decent. By "crossover" I assume you mean EQ adjustments? Not sure. But they have a very wide EQ band now.
By "decent" I mean, 3RCA outputs, cool display, MP3 capability, some type of audio input, and all that good stuff.
Eclipse, they're nice headunits..but you're right.. I think they are a bit simple
Alpine, as theronin said.. they've had motorized faces for a while now.
