Hey guys I just got my S13 (clap clap clap)
and it has an sr20 red top swap. but the problem is that the cops around here are amazingly *icks. So my hks front mount is a HUGE givaway of my illegle engine that I may have under my hood lol. Anyway I NEED to spray it black to mimic a radiator. But my other sr20 freind said it wasnt possible because the spray would make the intercooler not cool as it should because of the paint.
My question is, is there any kind of aluminum spray that doesnt coat something thickly and will still disperse heat? Not just a high heat black power coat but some kind of spray made for aluminum. Thx guys this will enable me to actually drive my car, so much help to me whoever can answer this.

BTW this is my first thread and I am new to this forum yippie.

congrats on the 240. the only spray i heard that was recommended are those for radiators. you should look for the eastwood radiator spray or something similar. when sprayin it..they said just apply thin coats to it. hope that helps

when u paint it just put a light mist, you are only painting the front face of the intercooler, the air will still travel through the core which will not be painted and still will still be effective. you dont lose much or any cooling, just dont put a thick layer and get the right type of paint.

thx alot. Does it matter what paint I use? if so what do you recommend? not sure where I could find that radiator spray

wonder if powdercoating it would be a more viable option

Swain BBE coating if you're worried about the heat. Radiator paint if you don't care.

you can however, annodize it.

Powdercoating would be a horrible option.

I suggest buying a black intercooler and selling your polished one.

so many retarded replies in this thread

"when u paint it just put a light mist, you are only painting the front face of the intercooler, the air will still travel through the core which will not be painted and still will still be effective."

yeah this is right

get some 99 cent black spraypaint, lightly spray the front of the core, bim bam done.

setrab oil coolers come painted black, they still work

I remember someone doing a write up on this before the measured the cooling efficency before and after paint. Little if any change in effiency. I agree with chmercer...

Also, Techline Coatings (http://www.techlinecoatings.com/)makes a thermal dispersant coating for aluminum called TLTD. I got my Greddy VSpl done for like $50. Here's a pic of my vspl:

also just fyi, there is like zero heat transfer on the end tanks and on the front of the fins, the only thing you are really sacrificing is the front of the tubes/plates depending on whatever core you have, which you will only be covering like 2% of the total surface of the tubes, and obviously covering them in paint does not like completly stop thermal transfer, all it does is slightly reduce it, so you end up with such a small efficiency loss that you cant even measure it, much less see it on a dyno/feel it while driving.
