View Full Version : Was Just in an Accident
7:50am this morning I pulled out of my apt complex. I came up to a light and turned right. As I drove down the road there is somewhat of a blind hill. I noticed a school bus in the right hand land had stopped at the railroad tracks and as I glance into my lane I was shocked to see a tiny little car stopped as well. There was a Ford Explorer behind him, and as I locked up the brakes and pulled slightly to the left I struck the explorer from behind.
The hood bent in half, my right headlight was crumpled into a ball and thrown into the street. The right fender is torn in half and all jacked up. The frame behind the right headlight is mauled. And for the most part the front bumper just has a few scratches.
Its very close to wether or not they are going to total the car. I was in a similar accident last year only much lighter and it ran my insurance company $3k. I know that this is at least $4-$5k and my car's value is only about $4k. I should have pictures up shortly after I get everything settled.
I think that if the car is NOT totalled, I won't bother with anything fancy like a cool new front end or front bumper. At the very most maybe a carbon fiber hood. But right now I just really want my car to be fixable. I just bought it maybe a month ago.
More to come.

Damb meng - j00 not evan gotz the car a month and yu0 recka dat chit?
Seriously ryan - that does not sound like a good thing. While the s13 isn't as bad as the s14 about getting totalled w/ little damage, it sounds like you may have enough there to send you over.
Why so attached? With the front susp. that we have, front end damage always compromises the handling (more than you would expect). I'd think you'd be better off sending this one to the yard. At any rate, good luck and keep us posted.
:pouring-one-out-for-dead-homie:
Well man, I think there is a 90% chance its totaled. I fuggin loved that car too...oh well...nothing I can about it now. I did hear of a champaign 240 fastback up north like 10mins for sale. We'll see.

I honestly think you're better off having it totalled.
Beware of the champagne... I think it comes w/ baybaysht brown interior Happy hunting!
...there are several 240s here in town Im going to look at if they total it. Only time will tell now.
Thing is...I paid $3,500 for the car and I see at least $3,000 worth of damage...thats not saying too much.

from the sound of it, it sounds like you have full coverage insurance.
and since ur accident sounds similar to mine (hood bent up, passanger side fender gone, headlight gone, bumper looks ok but gone to hell).
here's my tip
check the frame, if it's streight, it's worth workin on.
it's most likely they'll total your car, because an s13 has decreased in value, and to replace the part that holds the battery will be ridiculus money. so if the frame is streight, this is wha u can do:
when the insurance takes the car back, tell them u want the car. when i got in a accident w/ my camry, they said they'll sell it for 500 bucks back to me, which i took.
than, w/ the money u got for the car, go buy another car. and let this car be your project car. work on it slowly, if u have time.
check my homepage. when i got into my accident w/ the s13, i strightened it out myself. talk to me if u need tips on what to do.
but the biggest thing is, make sure the frame is streight. and u'll have time to work on the car, there's no point of keeping a wrecked car if u won't have time to work on it.

Wow...I was totally thinking of doing this same thing.. I'm going to have to inspect the car further to see if its worth buying back. The damage does NOT look that bad, but since the value of this car is CRAP...I think its going to be totalled.

This is right almost at the top of the "hill" You can see the rail road tracks at the bottom where the car stopped for NO REASON. Keep in mind the speed limit is 40mph
http://www.riotdesigns.com/240sx/accident/images/DSCF0006.jpg
This is the scene...you can see my black skid marks on the yellow line there. I slid for a good 50 feet. These pictures do a BAD job at displaying how blind this hill is. I struck the car at about 20-30mph.

from what i see... bumper looks streight, a SLIGHT tilt towards the passanger side... means frame damage. but it could just be the lighting... and yah, man, that looks bad...
edit: btw, man u wanna get the battery outta there, or else the sulfaric acid will kill a lot of stuff around it, such as the fues box, wires, than u'll cry in pain.
i'd take it out, and hose the part gently w/ water
edit: it's totalled sorry bro

I agree that the battery needs to be removed...but honnestly...I can't touch the car...its in the wrecking yard and they will NOT let me touch anything that is bolted down to the car.
Anyways...yeah, I kinda figured it was totalled...I hope my insruance gives me enough to buy another...

Hang in there dood...any word yet on how much the settlement will be?
Apparently State Farm is scheduled to inspect it this afternoon or tomorrow at the latest...so I should find out then. The damage is REALLY not that bad and 100% fixable. I don't see any frame damage...just the core supports got fubared (which are easily fixed). The only prob is that the car's value may be less then the estimated price to fix it. In a way I hope I can hang onto it...but if not...no worries...there are plenty of s13s for sale.

Sad to say thay will total it. My car was just totaled. I had a 95 240 with 110,000 miles on it. I got $4,319.25 for my car. sorry man i know how you feel. now i have to find another 240
HERE IS THE OFFICIAL WORD!!
The car is totaled... but wait, there's more. Remember, I purchased this car for $3,500.
They wanted to give me $4,592.90 after a $500 deductible. I asked how much it would cost to buy it back (because I know the damage aint that bad)...$500 even.
So guess what? Im buying my car back and throwing it in my garage. And on top of that I'll have $4k to buy a daily driver!!!! Im going to tear down the 240 and get it running and get it to a frame shop to check it out. Then...fixxing it up
I feel this is a fair outcome.

hey man, it looks like u got a bargan outta this... except the insurance rate might go up the ass...
but the short term consequences r good...
and how did i know it was totaled? i'm magical...
ur gonna have a tremoundous pain in the ass tryin' to fix that subframe part that holds the battery. my suggestion? cut it out to the strut tower. and weld a peice of metal that u can bolt the fender onto. and use some cheap sheet metal bend it, and cover that part, weld it to the frame. while moving the batter to the trunk.
edit: p.s. sil-eighty time?
I'm going to try and bang in out as best as I can...we'll see how well that goes...it aint too bad.

here's a tip, use a jack, stick it inside, and crank up the jack, so it'll push the metal out... little discovery i made myself after fixing my totaled tercel back to absolutly normal, till i totaled it again.
and i used the same method for my 240
