How do I know if my car has ABS? I looked around for like a "ABS" badge but didnt see one. Can you tell by just looking at the calipers or master cylinder?
My car is a 91 240 SE.

1. Read the owners manual
2. Hit a good 30 mph and slam on your brakes as hard as you can...then you'll know for a fact!

Zexel, usually when someone does not know the answer to a question they keep there mouth shut. In the future please avoid my threads cause I dont have time to deal with 16 year olds with nothing beater to do then show there lack of Intelligence.
OOO BTW here is the answer that gives just a tad bit more detail then yours.. ooo wait I mean it completly answers my questions unlink your jibberish.
To determine if it had ABS, look for an ABS warning light in the gauge cluster. Or pop the hood and follow the lines from the master cylinder. If it has ABS, there will be an ABS valve box on the passenger side of the engine bay near the firewall. To determine if it had ABS, look for an ABS warning light in the gauge cluster. So you cant tell if you have ABS by looking at your calliper or the master cylinder?... I remember hearing something about this... something about looking for a small mechanism on the calliper...

I dont know --- anyone know?
Anyone know where the ABS light is suppose to be on the s13 gauge cluester. I think its suppose to be to the left of the wiper fluid light but dont know since there I dont have the light/label..... might be why I dont have ABS.

Pop the hood open and look at the top left (pasenger side) corner. If you have ABS, there should be something thats silver/ chrome. Thats the ABS system.
On the gauge, it should say ABS right next to the check engine lamp (or some where on that side).
(I'm not sure about this one) Brake caliper should have a wire for the rear and front, I haven't looked at it yet.

nrcooled - why are you wasting my time and possibly others that might have the same question? Your reply provided nothing for this thread...... unless you can provide something positive to the threads I create please avoid them. Thanks
gh6o6 - actually asad answered my question a little after I created this thread.

If you have ABS, on the gauge it should say "ANTILOCK" next to the cruise control lamp.

You should be able to tell by following the brake lines under the hood near the firewall. If they run to a little box on the passenger side, then you have abs. If there is no little box, then you dont. Also, check to see if you have an ABS fuse. Im not sure about s13's..but when you start the car on s14's a light comes on that says ABS or ANTILOCK or something of that nature
Edit: oops...i guess i should read the rest of your second post before answering.....oh well...at least I gave you a correct answer <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Sil80 - it may be in your best interests NOT to tell people to avoid your posts. At least they answered. Especially intelligent people that have a good bit MORE experience than yourself with the 240..(nrcooled) You may need their knowledge one day.. and you also make yourself out to be a dick.
Have a nice day <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

When you turn the key to the accessories possition, you should see a light that says either ABS or antilock on the left hand side of the instriment pannel. It has been a while since I have seen it, my old roomates se has ABS. Neither of mine do.
But unless it burned out you can't miss it.

sykikchimp & jdkruger4,
Let me ask you a couple questions? Was nrcooled post educational to this thread? Was it even funny?
This is the tech section not chat and like most people I posted it in hear in hope to get an accurate answer and avoid all the stupid comments.
Everybody always talks about how they dig this forum so much more then FA cause it feels more like a community.... well its comments like nrcooled and you sticking up for him that make me disagree...
There are people here that answered my questions with out being ass's about it and rather informational so I guess I dont care if nrcooled thinks im a dick cause he was being one in the first place. Sound childish? Yep but really dont care.
Again thanks to all that actually took the time to answer my question...

nrcooled did not help you, that is obvious...what he was doing was showing his dislike for ABS. It did not hurt you in any way...if you don't like comments like that, just skip over them.
"Everybody always talks about how they dig this forum so much more then FA cause it feels more like a community...."
It is people like you on FA that make it feel like less of a community.
"I dont care if nrcooled thinks im a dick cause he was being one in the first place."
He did nothing wrong. Get your head out of your ass! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hmmm.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hmmm:'>

yes

If you are asking us for help, you had better fucking care.
Someone with an SR > Someone who doesn't even know if they have ABS and is being disrespectful

if you don't know if you have ABS or not, chances are you aren't somebody that uses it.
also.....nrcooled.........why would you not want abs? (i really hope the answer has nothing to do with "drifting")

Most SE's do not have ABS. And I think nrcooled's post was informative, and he wasn't trying to joke arround.

go out to a solo2/autocross event and you will see why ABS sucks.
iirc, what ABS technically does is brake until the point where your brakes lock and then releases it before it locks then brakes it again, and goes through the same sequence until your vehicle has slowed down.
I've been to a few autoX events and have seen how cars with ABS and cars w/o ABS performed when it came to stopping or slowing down.
5.0 Mustangs and corvettes usually seem to fair well when it came to stopping b/c their wheels just lock and stop them dead on as compared to some of the imports at the autoX.
I don't know if this is the same reason nrcooled hates ABS or not, but this is my reason I hate it.

If your wheels lock up you can't stop nearly as fast as if they weren't locked up. So if your not good enough to do threshold brakeing, you NEED ABS or you will lockup and go off course or atleast lose time. I plan to disable mine after a couple events (or runs even in one day) to see what the difference is like. Our ABS also seems to come on prematurely.

abs pros - it threshold brakes like you wish you could
abs cons - it is sometimes premature and doesn't get to the actual threshold as well as you could; weight; something else to break
thich - have you ever noticed how vettes and moosetangs run GIANT, sticky tires at autoxes? Those help. The little smoke puffs mean they weren't quick enough to modulate (which abs always is).
(hope I don't get bitched at for posting in the hijacked portion of the thread)
