View Full Version : Who's sick of feeling this way?

Whos tired of being paranoid about getting pulled over for illegal mods? Constantly looking in your mirror hoping you dont see red and blue lights?
For the past 2 weeks or so I have not been driving my car. My sisters were on vacation so i have been using their cars as my DDs. It feels DAM good to not have to worry about anything but my speed while driving. I'm not constantly looking for cops in my mirrors, i don't get nervous when a cop is behind me, and i dont have to worry what city i drive in. It feels like a giant weight has been lifted and i can actually relax again while driving.
I love my car to death, i put so much blood and sweat into it for years. I risk getting it taken away on a daily basis, i willing did the swap knowing i would have to feel this way, but im not sure how much longer i can do this way. There are times i want to keep it until i die and there are a few times i feel i should sell it and get another car that will be fun and not illegal at the same time. Buying a daily beater at this point is not an option for me due to funds (insurance would be killer). I really wish i could afford something else to drive daily because i dont want to part with it.
For the past month or so i've been considering selling the "250sx" and getting a S2000 and my cousin suggested getting a 2.5RS and swapping in a STI motor, which is perfectly legal. I always liked both cars, but i dont even know if i can stand selling my car.
What do you guys think? Do you feel just as paranoid as i do(for those who live in cali)?
BTW: if you're going to talk shit and say I'm not a true 240 enthusiast, or other crap like suck it up and deal with the cops, your fault, or you should have known, you shouldnt have done the swap you bitch
---stay out of my thread please, i want some real advice right now
thanks for reading

Keep it rusty, not real rusty but don't get a big ass fmic and all types of polished alluminum parts. Also on your 2.5RS STI swap idea, I think that would cost a lot of money to do. But thats just my opinion, keep it looking stock and there wont be a problem.

Yeah I know exactly what you're talking about everything you said that you do I do too and I stay away from certain cities too. But I dont even have a engine swap or cage or any of those crazy mods but It just take one time that you get pulled over for the pigs to write you up for crap. Just find you're self a really cheap daily beater like a 80's civic or some shit like that. Reason that I state something like that is that way you can pay less for both cars insurance. Or you can just get another car new or what ever and keep you're 240 as the track-Drift car that you will only drive to events once a month. I know for a fact thats what im going to do just get another car for daily driving and the 240 will just be parked and drive to events only.
Good Luck man :-/

I know exactly what you mean. Even when you drive responsibly, it seems like cops are out for you, and really can get you anytime they want and make up some bullshit to harass you. When I drive friends cars that are stock or whatever, it feels nice to be totally overlooked by most cops.

Is your dmv record clean? Have you been hassled by cops in the past?
Your cars look pretty clean and not bad-attention drawing, it doesn't seem like a likely target for cops to harrass. I think cops take more attention to the ghetto and/or ricer cars out there. But, if your car is done up really clean and you're not doing anything stupid, then you probably don't have as much to worry about.
I do know where you're coming from though. Anytime I see that cop in my rear view, my pulse rises :bite:
Just stick with it though. Because everytime you get behind the wheel, you'll remember why you did :bigok:

Get a daily driver, I don't have to worry as much in my area. But still, I feel like my car is not meant to be my commute so I'm getting something newer I dont have to mess with and can just use for the daily grind.

I got pulled over monday night.
The cop was cool, he just said my car was too low. He liked my wheels. :D He told me to raise my car, a little. He didn't sweat me about my exhaust or anything just said he didn't want to see it get crushed if a tire went flat.

No worries here.
... I live in NC
I am more worried about being stopped when I am feeling sporty and do 100+ on the road I work on, it is bone straight and runs parallell to the highway. I enjoy going faster than the cars who are SUPPOSED to be doing 75 when I, myself, am on a 45MPH.

Buy a daily driver.
Take the bus.
Bum rides from friends.
Buy a daily driver.
Buy a Tercel for $1000, call it a day.
Stop driving riced out cars on the streets.
Don't do SR swaps, keep your engine stock.
I have my old SR sitting at blu808's house and I'm debating if I even want to do the swap anymore til I get a daily driver.

I got pulled over a couple weeks ago,
Tire was skipping pulling into the lot from the welded diff, Cats were 404, SR with non resonated exhaust, bottom of the sideskirt was lower than the sideskirt.
cop was gonna give me a ticket for headlight being out until I flashed it and it came on. got a fix-it ticket for no proof of insurance instead
Texas rocks.
drove it with no headlights/plates/taillights/hatch to my painters the other day and got nothing.
So many stories from friends of caught at over 120 racing and getting off scott free too.

This was one of the main reasons I got rid of my s13/sr20. Constantly feeling the heat weather it is looking in the rear view watching for the police or fearing that my car would get stolen finally did me in. Sold it off and bought a Miata. Sure I do miss the power, but it is SOOOO nice not to worry about those things and enjoy driving the car without having to worry those things in the back of my mind. Unfortunately LA doesnt take kindly to car enthusiasts. If you are sick of it...just sell it.
Just my 2 cents

keep it stock and keep it simple
no shiny exhaust pipes
no scraping dumps
no STICKERS!!..not even a funny one..or a non racing/car one..NOTHING
no tint
no wing
no shiny wheels
if you have FMIC, get some mesh grill material from home depot and paint black (its what i did)
no loud music
no bucket seats
no driving like an asshat
stay within speed limit
no fart can loud buzzing exhaust (i see you have rb though so im assuming you dont have this and actually have taste)
no flashy paint color or scheme..seriously..keep it stock color...yes even avoid black beacuse it draws cops..i like white because it looks mundane
in all honesty i believe to enjoy your performance modded car (swapped) in CA you must sacrifice cosmetic mods...in other words..its either or..you cant do both...

Is your dmv record clean? Have you been hassled by cops in the past?
i have one speeding ticket from a year ago but other than that my record is clean and i no longer speed
keep it stock and keep it simple no shiny exhaust pipes
i have a shiny titanium exhaust which i bought years ago and never felt like getting a RSR since it is still a huge muffler and not stock looking
no scraping dumps
my car is not super slammed, way above the 22 inch limit
no STICKERS!!..not even a funny one..or a non racing/car one..NOTHING
i have absolutly no stickers, i hate them
no tint
tiny is very light, doesnt even seem like i have it, you can see right through
no wing
no wing on here
no shiny wheels
wheels not too shiny, but i guess it's still flashy, plus i needed some grip
if you have FMIC, get some mesh grill material from home depot and paint black (its what i did)
painted FMIC black, looks like radiator, completly hidden to plain view
no loud music
no longer have the subs, never bump music anymore either
no bucket seats
dont got those and if i did it would be taken out for street and put in for track days
no driving like an asshat
never did
stay within speed limit
i do now
no fart can loud buzzing exhaust (i see you have rb though so im assuming you dont have this and actually have taste)
even with the TI exhaust, i have a 2 foot resonator, high flow cat, and a silencer. my car is just as quiet as stock, people who have seen my car in person, they know it is the quietest 240 ever
no flashy paint color or scheme..seriously..keep it stock color...yes even avoid black beacuse it draws cops..i like white because it looks mundane
came stock black, i kept it that way
in all honesty i believe to enjoy your performance modded car (swapped) in CA you must sacrifice cosmetic mods...in other words..its either or..you cant do both....
agreed, but hated
maybe i should just sell the RB and just make the car look nice, or sell the car completly and buy another and rebuild without the performance mods
i dunno, maybe the cheap beater, but i dont have space for another car
what to do, what to do

If your exhaust is quiet , they will not have legal grounds in CA to pop your hood. You're fine. Cop pulls you over, take whatever BS tickets he wants to give you, but when he asks to pop that hood, "Sorry officer, I understand you are trying to do your job but I do not condone any illegal searches of my private property."
If I'm wrong please correct me.
funny, I drive my swapped, stickered, lowered S13.4 all the time because it gets overlooked, while my stock evo I bought as a daily gets all the police attention. Maybe it's a combination of the stock two-tone, quiet exhaust, and not being able to figure out wtf it is in combination with my clean record.. cops just fly right by me. But with my evo, they always follow me running my plates, etc. I'll be thankful for this if my evo ever gets stolen.
But I feel where you guys are coming from. I'm trying to get another S13, and just mod it aesthetically, to have a fully legal daily driver that looks just as good as my current S13.
i live in louisiana and i dont really have to worry about all of thses modded car tickets and stuff. but every time i see a cop i still think he might do something because of my exhaust. if im in a neighborhood and i see a cop ill usually just press in the clutch and coast so he cant hear my car.
you should probably be fine kouki s14. if your car is quiet and you drive normal you shouldnt get pulled over.

I agree, as long as you arent driving like an idiot I doubt you have much to worry about, your car looks so stock cops will probably barely give you a second glance.

I feel you on that. My car looks pretty stock, but you just cant help getting that feeling sometime. The chanc of you or me getting pulled over may not actually be that high...I pass bye city cops everyday...but you still get that feeling all the time because you know that all it takes is one time and your shit is impounded.
I fear the most ironically when I am on hte way to the track. Altimont the most...tracy cops and all cops in that area suck. Nothing better to do, and they are use to seing these cars.
Like it was said already...you can drive responsible and still get pulled for something stupid, "POP THE HOOD", over. My exaust is not loud at all but the cop can always claim that it is loud in HIS OPINION. When have you ever seen a cop with a tester, or ACTUALLY MESSURE THAT YOUR TOO LOW? 22 and under?
I say keep the car though, especially if your just going to mod something else. If your smart and are not an ass 99% of the time your cool. You may just get that feeling because of the swap. You will prob. get that with any mod car.
MY 2 cents

After owning various s-chassis, imo cops are more likely to pull over the ones that look beat.
I have a stock s13, and was on my way to the gas station, when a cop pulls me over telling me my tires are bald, and suspected me of being a "drifter".
New day, I'm driving my modded s14 down the street, pass the same cop, and the tires on my car were fresh from the track. Cop just watches and doesn't care.
Just just one example. Many people I know feel the same way.
But I believe that tasefully modded cars won't be pulled over as much as the ricier and broke ass looking ones.
But driving etiquette playes the biggest role.
^haha, so true!
I experianced this first hand also!
When my first S13 looked like this, I would get hassled and pulled over, and given random $10 fix it tickets.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b321/Yurikaze/con3d.jpg
But when the same car looked like this, I was never pulled over again.

You can also watch how you drive on the street and play the dumb game. I feel you though man. I keep the heavily modded cars in the shop or at home in the garage. My db is a turbo xb with a FMI. Even in the xb, Im always waiting for a cop to pull me over and ask about documentation on the turbo kit. As far as the S2000 goes, youll be dissappointed. That car has no balls. Ive tuned a ton of them here at our shop and aside from its agility, its got a totally different characteristic than the 240s, with or without the SR motor.

Funny thing is, now that I think about it, the last time I got a ticket was in me and my ladys 03' four door dark green auto Accord.
I Will say that I can smash on the freeway from time to time in my 240sx. Usually on my way back to the bay late at night with the passport on.
BUT I got my first speeding ticket in the ACCORD on the way back from D1 in March...Right outside of Irwindale I got a ticket for going 75 in a 65.:2f2f: FEEL THE SPEED.
He was actually in front of me and we were crusing and there were alot of people leaving that area and everyone is doing freeway speed. Ya know like 80 REALISTICLY. I hav past cops before at 80 and never got a ticket. People in the car ask dont you think you will get a ticket...i'm like no. If you are speeding like I can sometimes over 80 or DEEEEP in the triple digits then yes a cop is going to notice...OOORRR if you are driving a modid car next to him real slow it looks like you have something to hide. WELL anyway he droped back for a wile then decided to pull me over. Ticket. He asked if we had drugs too and was peaking in the back. My lady is a mix of stuff and so am I but I dont think we look suspect...I look pretty white I think.
But yah...$90 ticket for 75 in 65 IN AN ACCORD.
*Cross fingers* no tickets yet in the 240sx :coolugh:
He was like, out of town huh...of course I paid the ticket and did not GO BACK TO LA to fight that shit.

Pssh, he just pulled you over 'cuz you're black..
i almost got an exhaust ticket yesterday. my friend found a 240 for sale and the guy only wanted a $100 for it and its got a cracked head or blown head gasket( we havent taken it apart yet). so we took his dads truck and my car to go get the 240. we had to stop by the uhaul place to get a trailer first and i just parked my car in the parking lot and like 2 mins later a cop pulls up behind me and i was like im getting a ticket, lol. he walks out of the car and tells me " nice shiny exhaust..... ill be seeing you real soon." so he grabs some clipboard and goes into the uhaul place and i thought he was writing me a ticket inside since it was really hot outside. so me and my friend were waiting there for his dad to rent the trailer and sign all of the paper work and like 15 mins later the cop comes out and starts smiling at us and he writes down my liscense plate # then sits in his car for like 15 mins waiting for me to start up my car so he can give me a ticket. then after a while he just left. so we got the trailer hooked up on the truck and i followed in my 240 and we crossed the bridge to go into shreveport to get the car and when we were taking the turn to go over the bride i saw him in a distance trying to catch up with me , but i crossed the bridge into shreveport and a bossier cop cant go there. lol. so i got pretty lucky.

That reminds me of the time we were wrapping up a driftday (a few years back) and Grant was complaining his steering was "off" but drove it anyway to finish out the last heat or two. At the end of the event we all started swapping out wheels and lo and behold Grant's S14 had manage to eat a cone and then squirrel aways it's carcass in the spring/strut assembly. I literally fell over laughing at the site of his wheel coming off and a large sized folded up trashed out cone just wedged to hell up in the wheel well.
That by far was the best cone kill I ever laid witness to.

http://i5.tinypic.com/16gde1f.jpg
dont got the money to customize a new exhaust at this point and i've spent so much quieting this thing down.
it's very quiet but a bit shiny and blue, i still love it tho!
the silencer helps a lot, so that is another reason why i stuck with a N1 style canister.
you guys think just cause it's quiet a cop wont wanna pull me over?
i've been lucky for a few years now, cept when i got a speeding ticket and the cop threw that modified exhaust citation on there too. other than that i got a warning in alhambra once when i had the KA still, and back then it was like 10 times louder

About 4 year ago I had one of those shiny Greddy can on my old car. I got pulled over atleast twice a month and everytime I had the hod popped. Every single time I was told that the reason that I was pulled over was because the shiny exhaust was enough probable cause to pull me over and pop the hood. You will have to pop the hood, so that excuse of the latch is not working is total crap. If you refuse to pop the hood they will tow your car (this is in San Jose, CA). I ended up hacking off the exhaust tip and spray painted the can flat black, and never got pulled over for over a year. Anything that give the appearance of a modified car is enough for them to pull you over and pop your hood. Good luck with the car.

I havn't really been reading the off-topic in a while, but I must say, I (as a lot of people) agree.
Tonight was the 2nd day that I took my car out for 6 months (it's been sitting in my garage cause the ka-t project didn't go too well).
So I go to LONG BEACH to see this girl.. and so we're driving around trying to find something to do. Man oh man, I swear, Long Beach is populated with cops everywhere; I probably saw about 50 police cars (and over 100 policemen) within that 45 minute period.
First of all, we were going to this one 'park' thing.. on a hill, where there's just a nice view.. and we get there, and two cop cars are blocking the entrance, so I pull a U-turn in the cul de sac, and proceed to get out. I'm trying to be all slick with it and shift at 2k, but what do you know? Right after, my car back-fires twice, REALLY LOUD. hahaha it scared the shit out of me, but luckily they did nothing.
Next, while driving in downtown Long Beach, a cop's behind me, so I keep making various turns, but for some reason he's still there. I'm just scared shitless because he was literally behind me for like 7 different streets, and for about 5 minutes.. finally lost him though.. which was pretty much a huge relief.
The part part for tonight was on the hour drive back home.. it's kind of late, and I'm just tired, so I was driving maybe 65-100 the whole way.. depending on how I was feeling. On one part, I was driving maybe 77 mph in the fast lane, and I glance to my right, and a cop is just CHILLING right next to me. hahahaha I literally jumped in my seat and braked kind of hard.. he disappeared though.
yeah, sorry, I felt like venting.. but yeah, long beach police suck.. there are so many. thanks for listening.. lol

acting like you are trying to "lose" a cop is a good way to get pulled over.

Yeah, that's true, but I wasn't thinking straight at the time.. I was just scared.. and it's not like I was making it obvious, I drove pretty normal.

Nope, stock urethane with support rocks, as well as stock rideheight to prevent suspension damage. I couldn't do that today.

235/40/18 front
245/40/18 rear
the rear looks FAT cuz it's stretched on 9.5's

you know...im not afraid of getting pulled over by cops. its thieves. cops may harrass you, and give you tickets...but theives steal your car. they dont give it back, they damage the parts that you pay for, they fuck up your car, they dent it scratch it burn it blow it up, because they have NO RESPECT for your car. at least cops can't do this stuff. dont sweat cops. just act normal if they are around. cop going the other way, clutch in, be as quiet as you can. if he's following you and you are scared, pull into a side street and turn off teh car and get out lol. and paint your exhaust canister black if you are scared of it attracting attention. you can always use some paint stripper and get it off real quick lol.

no you dont. 100% covered would be your car in a crate buried 50 feet underground, in the ocean. no one but you would know the location, and thats the only way that no one would ever steal your car. even then, some treasure hunters might find it on accident and claim it as booty. then you will have had your car stolen. so...its never 100% covered, unless you mean insurance will replace the motor in your car too lol.
