hey i just got a set of front r33 brake calipers i hear that the 300zx and wrx pads work on them has anyone compared either of them to r33 specific brake pads, are they any smaller? oh yeah and i wanted to know if the 300zx z32 caliper rebuild kit will work for the r33.

did you get rotors too?

They should,

WRX, Skyline, 300ZX, 3000GT, RX7s all use a similar Sumitumo caliper. Im not sure if the pads are 100% Identical but its highly likely.

well theyre the aluminum 4 piston calipers. the ones that are a little bigger than the 300zx calipers. they arent the brembo ones, they still say nissan on them heres a pic of them. tell me if they are gtr, gts, or gts-t.

i didnt get the rotors cause i plan using cobra rotors and fabbing the brackets i need myself.

I have the same calipers also and are wondering what pads will work with them.

BNR32. Same pad as the Z32, should be the same rebuild kit too.

so i just got done disassembling the calipers so they are ready to be bead blasted and powder coated. the parts look to be the same as the z32 calipers i have but i havent compared them side by side. i will be disassembling the z32 calipers here soon too. i have a rebuild kit for the z32 calipers which i will most likely use cause they are older than the r33 ones. the R33 calipers internally look really good, i just dont know what kind of grease i should use for the seals once i reassemble, what should i use? well here is a picture of the caliper on a mock up of the 13" rotors i plan on using. the wrong rotors were sent to me so i just made a 13" circle from cardboard to represent the rotor. in the middle is a quarter to give you size relation. Im looking forward to see how hot these look when i get them powder coated...any suggestions on color? i planed on just doing gloss black but im not sure how that will look? i have bronze rims and a white s13. i plan on powder coating the hats of the rotors black.

go black.

there's nothing to grease on a fixed caliper, just mount it up.

all the internal seals and dust protectors had a coat of grease on them when i disassembled...i would imagine it is some sort of high temp grease...looked like a lithium grease it was a light grey/white color. the seals are what seems like a urethane, they deffinately aren't rubber.

this is the r33 calipers with the 13" rotors...i cant wait, i have everything but suspension. I'll post picks once i get calipers powder coated

What kind of rotor is that?
Does the whole brake pad contact the rotor?
What bracket are you using? Is it for sale?

carlos, The rotor is a 95-04 cobra rotor.
The prake pad should have full contact with rotor surface, if not it will only over hang a couple millimeters maybe not even that.
I will be custom fabricating the brackets, I will probably make different brakets for both the r33 calipers and the 300zx(z32) calipers, although with z32 calipers it looks like there will be a little more pad over hang.

go with a blue on the calipers. do these lineup perfectly like the z32 or is there custom things needed??

alexchanman: line up perfectly? If Im thinking what your thinking, the brakcet i will be making for the caliper will put it in the perfect location for them to work properly, i will however be machining the calipers a little on the two edges where the rotor rides for added clearance. perhaps i will sell the z32 front kit once i get everything together. (calipers, rotors, and brackets)
Oh and i think im just gonna go high gloss black, with the nissan letters machined to show the bare aluminum through.

It makes sense that there is not so much contact on the z32 caliper. The edges on the end are made to accept a 280mm rotor, while the skyline one is made to handle a bigger rotor. I would not spend much time concentrating on the z32 kit since cosmo, spl, and others sell the kit with the z33 track rotors. Please put me down for a pair of brackets to fit the r33 caliper.

oh i see, will you make these brackets exclusively for yourself or also fort he public??

well i had the intension for only myself but i have machinist friends so perhaps i can make more to sell. oh and checking out the camparison of z32 and r33 calipers it looks like the edges both end up in the same place, but on the r33 the pistons sit further in than the z32. picture is r33 on top z32 on bottom.

I've been using the Z32 rotors with these calipers (since it took me a long time to try to source some rotors...and i finally gave up and used the 280mm)....however, there's a good 2-3 mm overhang of the pads. which means uneven pad wear...(the tips aren't worn down at all)..everytime i hold down the brakes, to slow down for a red light or stop sign, i hear my brakes squeel. (the corner/edge of the rotor rubbing against the corner unworn pad) It doesn't squeek if I brake harder though, probably because there's enough pressure against the corner of the rotor/pad to stop the squeeling...

Ok so now the options:
1. buy 296mm rotors
2. buy an adapter for R33 GTST calipers to run a 324mm rotor (there is atleast two companies that have them already in production and in the market)

Problems with option 1. Very hard to source in the US (I have emailed 10+ brake distributors in the US). You could go with the project mu scr rotors if you want to spedn 600+ for a pair but I don't want to. Can source from australia/uk/japan but freight costs are about 150+ USD. (atleast that's what I've been quoted) and rotors themselves are (lowest quote from EBCbrakes) are 259+shipping from australia to 300 USD (DBA rotors)+shipping from australia...and the skies the limit on how much you wanna spend for these rotors

problem with option 2: possible uneven brakepad wear (depends on the bracket made), the curvature of the caliper won't fit the curvature of larger rotor (i've heard people grind the inside edges of the calipers in order for more clearance for the larger rotor), have fun paying for the brackets + rotors (200+ for the brackets), personally, i don't think it's worth it...but...read on about the upgrade bracket

anyways...i guess that's what info i have to offer...been reading up in the skyline forums

if anyone knows a US distributor that can get their hands on R33 GTST rotors (296x30) for a decent price (under 350ish?) let me know...and if ANYONE knows where to get DBA rotors in the states let me know!

btw...goodluck with that bracket for the R33, there's not much 'distance' between the 296-324 in order to get a solid bracket in place versus a bracket for the Z32 caliper which goes from 280 to 324....whats in the works right now (atleast in australia) are brackets to use the R33 calipers with a 350mm rotor.

okay since the r33 calipers have the pisons closer to the center of the hub i noticed that the 300zx pads sit toward the outside of the caliper and it seems that the brake pads should be more centered. I will take pictures so you can better understand what i am talking about. i think that i will check to see if the WRX pads sit in a little bit of a different location in comparison to the z32 pads.

you cant really see it in this picture but on the bottom caliper (R33) the the edge of the caliper cylinder can be seen lower than the brake pad. maybe another set of pads will sit lower and work on the r33 calipers? anyone have suggestions other than checking out WRX pads?

http://www.dba-america.com/mustang/news_events_press.html took 2 minutes to find. I've been looking to get a set of DBA's 2 piece rotors

If you get a bracket, you might as well sell the r33 calipers and just get an off the shelf z32 bracket and get z32 calipers, as your eliminating any gain you'd get out of the taller r33 rotor/caliper combo. Also DSG said he runs a IS300 rotor with washers to space out the caliper 2mm on r32 gtr/r33 gts calipers. {erformance nissan carries the stock rotors for a decent price as well.

I've got R33 calipers, and im just using z rotors for now, and dealing with the pad wear issue, but i've got no squeaking. P

your skyline rotors:
performance nissan
courtesy nissan
superior nissan motorsports
frederick's nissan

they all carry the rotor you seek (estimated $100 for a blank rotor and $130 for drilled slotted nismo rotors)

picture of mockup. wheel, hub, rotor, and caliper. still waiting to get the calipers powder coated. let me know what you think. oh and what wrx pads fit the z32 calipers?
