Hey all,
Just bought a 90 S13 to discover when you fill up all the way the tank has a hole in it. I bought a parts car yesterday for various reasons and pulled the tank off of it. It had about 5 gallons of gas still in it and it hadn't been sitting for too long, but this car had 220,000miles on it and the body was rusted through so I'm a little worried the tank, although looks to be in good shape, should be cleaned, sealed and possibly fortified. The problem is to hvae it cleaned and sealed here runs $250 which seems a bit high to me, but I know they use very expensive epoxy sealant. I don't wanna try to do it myself with the latex because I heard its no good.

MY question is...should I hope its good as is...bite the bullet and pay $250, or is there an aftermarket tank out there close to $250 that replaces stock or fits in the spare tire well??? and if not could I just buy a racing fuel cell and stick in the spare tire well or fabricate the well to take one.

Thanks everyone:bash:

also is there anything else i should do during the process??? it supposedly has a warlboro fuel pump but are those cheap enough that i should go ahead and replace it or is there a filter on it to replace? also I think im going to go get a 300zx twin turbo fuel filter as per the guy i bought the junk car from.

You have several options:

1) If you want to keep your OEM tank, look for a place to rebuild the tank. They'll fix everything and give the inside a good coating. It's a little expensive ($500 or give or take a few hundred, I don't remember) but this should last the life of your car.

2) Get a fuel cell. Cost depends on how elaborate you want it.

3) Leave it and have a fuel leak.

well like i said the tank i pulled off the junk car does not leak...the car was driving a few weeks ago before the motor was pulled. so i could get it cleaned/coated or just leave it alone and put it in my car...

but i did look up a racing fuel cell (12 gallons) from summit...and they are 100 bucks 17"length, 16"width, 10" high...might fit in the spare tire well, but my only concern is will the fuel pump fit on top of the tank - http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D290102&N=%2D128260+115&autoview=sku
what does everyone think???

You could buy a fuel cell, which is near pointless, even for some forms of road racing.

You could have a shop rebuild it, but that's a hassle, and costs too much.

Or, just go to your local wrecker yard, and grab a fuel tank. Becuase they are required to take the take out of the car. So it's a walk in walk out type of thing and that should only cost about $60~

If you are worried about the tank from your parts car, just pull the tank and unscrew the fuel pump. You can see directly into the tank and inspect the whole thing that way.

Ya if youre not trying to spend too much money the junk yard is your best bet.

As for the Walboro fuel pump, Ravspec is selling the whole kit for $85 on Adevertised specials and sales. Or you can take the chance of buying one on ebay for $80-$100, and hope you get what you pay for. If you dont know how old the fuel pump is and have a few bucks to spare it wouldnt be a bad idea to grab one while they are only $85.

Well the tank looks really clean that I pulled.. I just wanted to be safe...but what's the worst that can happen?? Anyways, I do have an SR setup, I'm pretty sure it has a warlbro (jsut bought the car) and I don't know about the injectors, but it certainly won't hurt to buy the 300zx fuel filter.

While I'm here...is it incredibly stupid to try to buy 300zx brake systems from a junkyard...where do most people get them?? Forums, ebay, ??

Thank you all so so much

Get the brakes from forum and ebay, or from a local parting out a car. Junkyards are retarded expensive when it comes to stuff like that, only good for small items you can pocket, or items you REALLY need.

The fuel tank is not that hard to replace, just swap em out, and call it a day. If it still leaks or whtever, then spend another hour and swap for another one, save yourself some money.

Warlboro fuel pumps cost about $90 shipped nowadays, if you feel like that's chump change to you, then get another one. If not, then work with what you got.

And yes, get a z32 fuel filter if you got SR.

the worst that could happen would you would loose gas if there's a leak thats about it, as for the brakes ebay or local junk yard or get rebuilt one's at the auto parts store (around 120$ in canada, nts where you live)

Wash junkyard tank and slap it on, end of story. Don't forget to get a new gasket for it.
