I currently have a RSR ExMag on my 89 hatch with a ka24de and I want a different exhaust that is not as loud. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think greddy would be your best bet (oval muffler type).

I also have the RS*R ExMag and I thought it was the most quiet exhaust I could find.

Problem with the exmag (stock looking) is that it comes with no resonator. So, that alone and a 3 inch piping will be very loud on any N/A 4 banger, simple.

Go for something with a proper resonator or muffler installed after the cat and stay away from the canister if your trying to avoid noise. They are prety much a straigh through design, hence, not much sound deadening. I would say for your options
1) Greddy SP2
2)5 sigen border III (although good good luck finding these. If they are not overpriced, they are out of production)
3)BRM 2.5inch with 18inch resonator and dual tip magnaflow mullfer
4)HKS Hi-Power (funny enough, even though canister variant, it does have a resonator/muffler in the mid section pipe helping nose levels)

Thats what I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know if you need anymore help

P.S I would also recommend you stay with a 2.5inch higflow cat to slightly aid in sound deadening and since its N/A, power deficit wouldnt be anything to worry about.

G6, was your car turboed?? If it was, then you can more than definately get away without having a resonator and 3 inch piping as long as the muffler is present instead of a canister.

custom setup

done deal

no piping bigger than 2.5" for NA and a resonator

any oval can straight through from the muffler shop

I have always liked the HKS hi-power is a good sounding exhaust on that car, deeper and not too loud

I have a 5zigen fireball catback on my S14 and the sound is just perfect. I added a hotshot header few weeks ago and now I can honestly say that it is louder. Much louder that it was. I would say it's at the limit to be too loud

Custom Exhausts always seem cheap to me... maybe Im just a brand name guy

+1 for custom exhaust, but the tailpipe (muffler) i will choose brand name instead of no brand or ebay crap

Oh well yah, of course..
the components are still name brand parts..

Catco is pimp for high-flow cats
and dynomax makes pimpin' mufflers..

I have the redtop S13 SR with T25, Megan turbo outlet & downpipe, 2.5" OEM-replacement (going with 3" very soon), and ExMag.

I can say the car is not loud at all. I drive by cops all the time and they don't look at me twice, and they're used to slapping people with exhaust ticket. It's not noticeable at all.

I dug around before ordering my exhaust and I thought the ExMag would be the best choice for me, even without a resonator. I had Tanabe 3" downpipe, testpipe, and catback with canister exhaust and it was terrible. The noise was intolerable without earplugs.

I had the HKS Hi-Power Exhaust.

Its very quiet even at WOT.

One major problem with it, is that is hangs low...I mean super super low.

That alone caused me to buy a 3" GP Sports exhaust. I'll let ya know how stupid fucking loud this thing is gonna be on an NA once I get it.

neme nice exhaust!!

As far as piping, most stainless steel piping will be the same quality, given where its made and material as well as wall size. But, in general, in some cases atleast, you will find that the same stainless piping thats on most name brand exhaust systems, is the same one sold at exhaust shops, just with a nice name brand tag and price slapped onto it. Simple. Personal preferrnce in this case on which exhuast

My setup, stock header to a brand new magnaflow direct replacement 2.5 inch cat, 3 inch stainless catback with a 18inch resonator to a twin tip (non canister mind you) muffler. Sounds amazing and very low key as the muffler is painted a corrosion resistance paint in an aluminized silver color. The piping from catback however is stainless.

The header in my case probably makes a difference in loudness (and probably performance) but I am pretty sure that the 2.5 inch cat (instead of 3 inch) and a failry long resonator helped out a lot in noise cancellation as well as Upper RPM raspiness. Might get a little louder with a header

Okay, since I know WHY NemeWeirdo got his exhaust in the place of his N1, I chime in on this thread with what I did about 2 1/2 months ago:

What resonator are you running?I am asking because I have the exact same set up as yours, but mine sounds loud on my SR.

Yeah, I have that resonator installed also. But it's still louder than my old hks hi power. Well, at least it looks stock so that I think I am fine.

theres a lot of brand name exhaust ive seen that are very poor quality to my standards. mild steel instead of stainless. mig vs tig.. etcetc.

Hotshot intake -> 2.5" carsound (magnaflow) hi-flow cat -> 2.5" mandrel bent piping (stainless-steel) -> 2.5" magnaflow resonator -> 3" Tanabe muffler. I used to get compliments all the time (when I was able to drive my car -_- )

Eventually I want to get a stock looking setup, but exhaust is the last thing on my list. More important other things to fix/replace/mod.

lololol If I could do it over again, I'd get 3" with a dual tip, stock looking muffler. I bought this piping from an internet site 2 years ago, so it comes out at an angle like the "jdm tyte" exhaust...

Generic.. resonators don't really need a name brand
