View Full Version : SCCA Club racing with An SR20DET 240SX

Hey guys,
I just got done talking to a buddy of mine about SCCA Club racing. He informed me that any car not already equipped with a turbo system already is not allowed in any of the SCCA classes. How can this be? Does anyone here have any knowledge of this? I would love to run a turbo car, but if it is not allowed in Road Racing with the SCCA, then whats the point? I might as well just run a built KA.....HELP! I have huge plans for this car! Im pretty sure you can have an SR20 swap in SCCA Club Racing...but it will bump you up into a much higher class. There are a lot of rules n regulations in SCCA, best thing to do is to just contact your local rep unless you like sifting through hundreds of pages of rules.

I'm definitely sure you can use a turbo or a swapped engine in certain SCCA classes. For one, Adam Hutchinson does Solo I with a turbo SOHC KA. For another, at my first Solo II event, there was an Impreza 2.5 Wagon with a BIG turbo in it. Finally, the class I'm planning on competing in at the next event is SM with a turbocharged KA24DE. From my very limited understanding, SCCA will place you in Street Mod or Street Prepared for a swapped engine.

I know that about SOLO I And SOLO II, but i am talking about club racing (SCCA Road racing). Anyone know for sure? I emailed a rep, and when i get a response ill post it here.

I am not aware of any class except ITE that they would classify a car with a swapped engine. In IT the car must have the same motor (non-turbo) that is was orginally built with. If the car doesn't fit into a class, it then usually goes into E, which is a catch all type of class. Ususally has a bunch of turbo's in the class, that weren't prpepared specifically for IT.
Build the KA and the car will be classed in ITS. Go to scca.org and order a current GCR (rulebook) and READ IT before you start building the car.

*not having a rule book and not willing to read it for this* I always assumed an SR would put you in GT (2 or 3) - which is not a place that I could afford to be! That allows whole motor swaps. I always thought that IT required the factory motor to remain (even if F/I). The SR is just not SCCA friendly - technically, in autox you should run it in Mod b/c it is not a US licensed engine (which is must be to run SM).
In any event, keep in mind that building a race car and getting a racing license is a lot of work. I'm sure that bbp could tell you the countless thousands of $$$'s gone... all gone to the Goddess of the Late Apex. If you haven't started already, start getting track time - as much as possible - while you consider your car build up. I figure at the rate I'm going, I won't be eligible for evaluation for another year or two (and I try to regularly hit schools). Also, honestly, while my goal is to run an ITS car - there is little chance it will be my current car b/c of the rules.
I think in GT the car's engine can be updated or backdated, as long as it was available in the states. I don't think JDM motors/ accessories will make it into SCAA club racing.
May look into NASA's classifications.
Iwould reccomend anyone building a racecar to get the rulebook of whatever series or several different series and see what can and can't be modified. Down the road you may find that that motor swap or big brake kit isn't a legal mod and you have to take it off.... or worse yet it discourages you from continuing your racing endevour.

Well this kinda sucks then! I have an 89 240SX, and would be in ITA with 1st gen RX-7's and the such, but one guy told me (Before he knew what i drove) that early 240SX's dominate ITA, and that is what i should build <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>. Im gonna order one of those rule books nad read up. Thanks for all the help!

Your right! Early 240sx are in ITA and they DO dominate. I think that is the car to have. It is doing very well in the SE. I have a 95 that is in ITS for some reason. I am underpowered compared to some of the old Z cars and the BMW's are going to be FAST once more of them get properly developed.

Well I was looking at the same thing before I even looked into seriously getting an SR. You'll be placed in Street Modified if I'm not mistaken (If not street prepared). Their rules allow engine swaps within the same make. Forced induction OHC up to 3.0L etc. Minimum weight is 2200lbs. Pretty much all suspension mods allowed. VLSD only. And no poilers extending over 4" from the decklid on a fastback.

Yeah, sucks that the ~10hp gain you got going from SOHC to DOHC bumps you up a class <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>
IIRC, in one of tnords many ideas <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'> he was talking about an ITA 89-90 s13, puts you near the top of ITA vs. the 91+ farther down in ITS.
