'The Bells' is a reference to a very popular sample used in hip hop during the early/mid eighties - I forget what song it's from.
It's very prominent in RUN DMC's Peter Piper as they were the first to popularize it on record.
LL was a hungry young cat in his early days at Def Jam and saw DJ Run - arguably the best MC then - as his main target. They developed a rivalry made worse bytheir close promity to each other from touring together during the early days of Def Jam where LL would open for RUN DMC.
LL decided to use 'the bells' sample for his debut single aptly named "Rock The Bells". Run found out, go pissed, and put a stop to LL's biting. The single was a hit regardless and even tough the famous sample isn't anywhere in the song due to Run's cockblocking the title remained unchanged becoming one of the highlights of LL's debut album "Radio". 'The bells' ramained an integral part of many DJs repertoire for years to come cementing it's importance in Hip Hop's history.
I don't what the hell Wu Tang have to do with rocking the bells but the documentary sounds interesting. I'll probably catch it when it's released on DVD.
