If its your first bike i would reccomend the F4i any of the other ones would be a death sentence. The f4i is actually a pretty bad idea if you have never ridden before. If you are doing mostly track days i reccomend the gsxr. If you are doing mostly street and some track. I would go with the r6.

First off..you forgot one of the best. the Cbr 600rr.

It's tough picking the right bike cause there's no right decision. They are all more than capable of doing their job. And it's near impossible to test ride a new one. This may sound funny, since the performance is so high on these new bikes, ignore the performance numbers and go with whichever one looks better to your eye or whichever one is more comfortable.
If i were to choose one it would probably be the 600RR. Honda is the last 1000 and the first 600 i'd consider. They always make great bikes with neutral handling, but the powerplants aren't always up to standards. The gixxer has adjustable rearsets and a slipper clutch stock, which is cool for racing.
Read magazines for reviews on handling characteristics.
definitely dont get an F4i unless you get something used and cheap. it's an old bike that shouldn't be in production anymore.

well this will be my first bike, i basically want start riding to school and work.. and then back home... big thing to me is just saving money...i just need something that i dont have to keep fixing...
ive always wanted a bike, so i think its time to take that step... i will be riding with a bunch of friends and maybe start taking some classes to get the DL...
right now im leaning towards the honda, but an r6 would be great also....
i dont want a buell....

You're going to save money by buying a 7 thousand dollar bike?
In all honesty (you wont like it) but get something small. They are less intimidating, easier on gas which is what you are trying to justify this purchase for, will teach you to push the limits of the bike better so basic fundamentals. Suzuki GS500's and Kawasaki EX500's are incredibly simple and cheap. Buy one used and ride it for 6 months. After that you can sell it for practically the same price you picked it up since everyone learns on these things. They get around 65mpg too so that can justify your commute ;)
Then when you are getting a fast bike, get a GSXR750 ...hah

Umm If this is your first bike then you should not buy a new one. These bikes are 10k out the door with tax. Just get a nice bike that has minor crash damage. Shit. My current bike is a 2000 cbr 929rr with ti exhaust, stainless lines, racing slicks, undertail, and some other shit, and it was only $3400.00
It has 150hp and will do 186 mph.
Thats more than enough for just cruising around.
I would rec. you find a used f4i, r6, gsxr 600 and start there.

yeah i wasnt planning on buying a brand new bike just needed input towards the direction i wanted to go with make.... i couldnt afford a brand new bike for the life of me... anyhow since i havent been workin in 2 months... but i will have enough for a used bike... my price range is around 3500 roughly.. anyhow.. so i assume a f4i it will be , i dont really care about the color of the bike... since i plan on painting it anyhow with all my autobody knowledge..
im not that much of a speed demon but i do like to go fast... but u wont see me at the track... this would suffice me anyhow for a long time... my friends say so...
if u could pick a color to paint a bike what color would that be?

end of story,. get a ninja 500 or gs500
if yuo get anything bigger, youll be one of the people that we say....dont be that guy
dont start off on an expereinced level bike. EVERY 600 out there now is to that level. they are too light and too fast for a beginner. The FIRST time yuo panick and take a wristfull of that throttle....your gonna kill yourself or that lil old lady
Buy a geo metro....or start on a beginner bike like you should
I started on an enduro.....it gave me a huge amount of skills becuase of the manuverability of hte bike.
besides....why the hell would you spend 10+ grand to save money? Its like buyign a hybrid..you dont start saving money over the overage you pay for like 8-10 years i believe

I second starting off low. My friend actually crashed his F4i last weekend and he's only been ridiing for 3 months. He gave the whole yadi yadi about not stunting and riding from point A to B. Then he gave it a wrist full of throttle, hit the curb and has a broken collar bone. Not to mention how fucked up the bike is.
I would really recommend taking some sort of MSF course and then as you are about to graduate, think about the bike u would like to purchase. Because if you go in this blind, and buy a bike before you know how what YOUR capablities are, your gonna taste something nasty.
But as for the bike selections up above, Id upgrade to the 06 GSX-R 600 or the Kawi Ninja ZX-6R 636. (thats not a 636 tho)
trsilvias13
06-19-2006, 02:05 PM
I would get the ninja 636 or the zx6rr. But consider this would be your first bike, get a used one. You can start on a 1000cc bike if you like, it all about self control. As long as you dont go crazy on the throttle it should be okay.
And get something fuel injector , that would be a good suggestion.
Arnetts7
06-19-2006, 02:42 PM
+1 for Fuel Injected FTW. I got an 05 r6, and it was my first bike and love that thing to death. use it as my commuter and weekend rider, and is a great bike.
One thing I would recomend is to get a used one though, dealer jacks the shit out of you.

please get used...i started with an F2...it may not be fast, or handle the greatest, and is definitely old technology, but shit was that thing fun and convenient...now i have the 49 state F4i and that feels like enough for now...granted i havent rode spirited in a long time, but i dont feel ill need to upgrade anytime soon (power/displacement-wise)...even if i did in the near future, the highest id go is 750cc...call me a pussy, but IMO, power is overrated when it comes to bikes...look at bill mays (sp?) from the east bay...besides, id say a good 90% of liter bike owners arent even using 50% of their bikes potential...
plus, it may sound odd, but please anticipate on crashing...it may sound bleak and stupid, but youre going into it sounding like its only commuting and youre safe...its always other people you should worry about...im never worried about my riding/decisions, but terrified by everyone elses...first things first when you get your bike...get all the gear and get a loud slip-on...itll save your arse in traffic...
if getting pre 98, id say honda and suzuki...if post 98, id say honda, suzuki, and yamaha...and i wouldnt get a kawi until after 2003...anything after 2003 is basically the same with minor differences in suspension...most importantly, just make sure youre comfortable with it...

If you just need a bike to get back and forth to get to school why are you so set on getting a bike that has more expensive maintainence, consumes considerably more gas, is less comfortable then some other examples, and is a lot more to ensure? Either change the reasons for your getting this bike, or listen to reason. Quit lying to yourself ;)
You could get a GS500, EX500, or SV650 for your price range. More likely those bikes will be in better shape as well since they were not as costly orignially, meaning they will be newer and lower mileage. The SV650 would probably be the best long range bike out of all those with the riding position/high windscreen
Before you dismiss Buell completely, look up the prices for some used Blasts. Buell claims they can turn around 75mpg

seriously..if its your first bike..dont get a new one.
Personally i'd never go with the 500's cause they're all so damn ugly. I convinced our bassist Brian to get an F2. It's not that fast but still hauls ass, if that makes sense. It handles well, gets decent mileage and will be reliable.
IMO no 600's have too much power. They dont accidentally lift the front end like my R1, or any liter bikes(unless it's due to undulations in the road). They are relatively tame and the power is absolutely controlable. If you dont have the self control to ride a 600, then dont buy a bike
600=mind control
1000=wrist and mind control
Riding to the max potential of the bike is absolutely irrelevant because you'll probably never do that even with a 250cc bike. The point is having the power cause you want it. It's funner and easier to ride unless you are riding over your head. I wouldn't get another 600 cause nothing in my book justifies it. So my advice is since you're buying a used bike, get the F4 or F4i (even F3's are cool) and learn on it for a year minimum.
All those who haven't ridden..pay no attention to them. It's like ppl who never drove with a 2-way or welded diff and think that everything means spinning out. It's not that bad. You seem like an intelligent person to me Bory. You'll make the right choice because there is no wrong choice. Take everything in before you make a decision

I love my F2. It was my first bike and I still have it. And oh ya, does that thing still haul ass for its mileage and being a 14 yr old bike. As for crashing, it really is inevitable. May it be you low siding at 15 mph, or high siding on the freeway. Or just dropping your bike on yourself. Just take it one step at a time and get your balance before you start going crazy.
I dont know about the rest of you guys, but i would really recommend a MSF course before you purchase your bike. Or take it while your looking. That will basically set the foundation on your riding skills and its your responsibility to build up your skills upon that.
Since your going to be commuting on the bike a lot, you need to know what to expect and learn on the basics befoe you go out into the big, irresponsible world of other drivers.
Good luck on your hunt.

Var you read my mind.
That's exactly what i was thinking, 500 are hella ugly. Thats why im leaning towards the 600s,and people are full of shit these days because before i got my welded diff i heard of people saying that if you get a welded diff you're going to whip out all over the place. I also heard of the other side of the story...
then i though " just don't be a idiot and drive safe."
So i got a welded diff and it just shows that a lot of people don't know what they are talking about...

Order of bad things about 500's.
1)Ugly. Both of those bikes were originally made in the late 80's early 90's and not much has changed on them....Definitely lacking serious sex appeal
2)Not to quick(duh)
3)After market support. Where is it? Nobody cares damnit!

Yeah, I agree.....start out with a Used bike. Start out with a early '70's model Iron Head or Sporty. Who am I kidding, who drives Harleys (My Next Toy!)?
I dont know where you are located but in Myrtle Beach, SC they have a couple stores that sell bikes with minor damage. They have anything from Newer bikes 05-06's all the way to 00's. The damage ranges from Fairings, speedo, forks, and minor shit. Most of the time though the frames are straight. Prices range from $2.5k-$5k. Very cool people to deal with. If you want I can dig up the name. *a

I got my first bike a year ago. Its an 01 Yamaha YZF600R (i.e. comfortable version of the R6). It had been dropped a few times (nothing major, just scratching) so I got it for $1900. Everyone I have talked to has said it is probably the most comfortable sport bike they have ever seen. I would suggest keeping an eye out for one of those as well. It has been a great bike so far.

Choice #1= SV650, has good torque for everyday use, isn't fully faired so its less of a hassle to maintain, the older generation is super slim so it feels like your riding a bicycle. 4 bangers are a little too wide for my tastes.
2nd choice= If you have to get a 600, get the older gen R6. By far the most comfortable of the 600s, and best looking to boot.
If your a short dude, stay away from the bikes that keep your ass in the air with a high seat and hands super low with clip ons. These make for potentially nasty situations in parking lots, driveways etc.

That thing only tops out at 230mph....or more I hear. Ya I'd go GSXR or CBR out of your choices. I personally don't like the R6, the seat digs into my legs and it's not comfortable for me. Another choice my cousin learned on was a Katana, then his dad got a hayabusa, he was fine on that and now hes getting either another Hayabusa, GSXR or TL1000. So I think a 600cc is alright.

haha. Man i havent heard that in forever. So you meant chicken strips like i was only using the middle of the tire? Hahahahaha lmao.
Maybe you should ask my leathers which part of the tires im using.

Or maybe look closer at the tire.

Hahah. Well sorry if it seems like that to you or anyone else. I really dont give a shit what anyone on here thinks, or think that i have somthing to prove. I just try to correct myself when the wrong information gets spread. I am on here to have fun, and give/recieve info about motorsports. Thats all.
Somone asked to see pics of my pos track whore so i posted it up. Maybe people shouldnt be so critical about everything.

i hav had a variety of bikes and i learned on a 94 cbr600 f2 and it was a great bike, i rode it for 6 mo then i bought a smokin joes addition cbr, sold it the bought a gsxr600 srad, then upgraded to a 750 srad, then got out of the scene for a few yrs and in 05 bought a brand new ZX6R 636 and then a couple of mo of riding that i hopped on a friends GSXR 1k and decided to upgrade to an 05 ZX10 which is what i ride almost daily now, i have done a couple of things to it(Leo Vince exhaust, power commander3, K&N, and new rear sets) i absolutely love this bike. but imo i would definately buy something used, i had 3 used before i finally bought new! Its a given, no matter how good you ride, every rider goes down at least once, ive been down twice, one bad and one not so bad.
just my 2 cents worth. good luck and keep it rubber down!!!

^^ point being? should i make a whole new thread just about bikes again?
and get some tard to tell me to use the search?
I thought it was great how Honda went from 8 piece to 4 piece frame, and implemented the electronic steering dampener on the 600, let alone the suspension where the theory is the body is now pressing down on the back wheel rather than the standard coilover set up where the wheel is pushing up against the body.
