Not sure if this is motorsports/regional/off topic/etc but here goes...
Last time I took I-5 through grapevine and then a bunch of dark 2 lane roads... I see WSIR's site mentions one other method:
I-5 to HWY 58 E, To HWY 14 S @ mojave, To Rosamond.
Having never been on 58 or 14, does anyone have an opinion on which is the best route for a truck/trailer? I'd prefer to avoid really twisty roads because of the trailer, and I'll be driving late at night. But if it's no twistier than going through the grapevine and possibly flatter, I'd be all for that.
Here's the complete directions:
DIRECTIONS FROM SAN FRANCISCO, CA / NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREAS:
South on I-5, to Highway 58 East, to Highway 14 South (at Mojave). Go approx. 15 miles South on 14 to Rosamond Blvd. Take the Rosamond Blvd. exit in Rosamond, and go West approx. 6 miles to the WSIR main track entrance at 75th Street West. OR, you can go over "The Grapevine" on I-5 to Highway 138, then go East to 90th Street West, turn north and go to Rosamond Blvd. Go right on Rosamond Blvd. and travel east approx. 1.5 miles to the track entrance at 3500 75th Street West off of Rosamond Blvd.)
thanks!

Ahh... last time I used google maps with the track address. But I guess it's less than perfect because it probably tries to use the route with the least # of steps.
I guess I'll just go with the track directions even though I like to have mileage listings so I know I haven't deviated too far off course.
thanks!

Grapevine sucks.
Take HWY 58 to 14. Its more flat and faster. :)

hey mike! long time no see! i did a just drift event last year. from I5, i hooked up with 99 through 152. im not sure if its the shortest route but i took it becasue im acustomed to travel 152 when i go to fresno. from 99, you can hook up with 58 then 14.
58 is hella long the 1st time around! once you get out of bakersfield, 58 becomes hella hilly with lots of grade changes. i was kinna scared then, fully loaded 86 in the middle of the dessert with lots of hills. once you get around tehachapi, road becomes fairly level until you hook up with 14.
you gonna stay in mohave? once you are in 14, mohave isnt that far. i stayed in motel 6 in mohave. mohave is hella windy! from mohave, wsir is only about umm 20 mins away, not that far.
i hope that helps man. youll hella enjoy just drift, i know i did. im pretty sure your titan can take on 58. just use low gears and drive slow.

Thanks Al and Paul!
Yeah last time I went up grapevine (my first JD event ever in January I think) it was rainy as hell, and I was stupid and strapped the car on the trailer with the front straps in an X, and of course going up the GV the car slipped about a whole foot further down on the trailer and jacked up the weight distribution something awful and it started to sway if I went any faster than 60mph going up the hill... which is too slow for the left lanes and too fast for the right lanes with the big rigs, so yeah, I don't like GV any more either heh. Even if that was completely my fault.
But yeah, I'm definitely taking either of those other routes. Sarah's not going to this one, so I'm just going to sleep in the car somewhere along the way.
Thanks again guys, hope to see you both soon.
