So we installed my Tomei 2-way LSD tonight But for some reason when I turn, it makes like a rumbling noise from the back and you can definately feel it.

Anyone have an idea what is wrong? We went to a parking lot to do some figure 8's and it just had the same sound over and over again. I was supposed to take my car to get it cornerweighed, but I don't want to risk driving it out there (40 minutes each way) when it is doing this.

This may be a vague question, but can anyone help? I'd really appreciate it.

Thats the 2way locking. all 2ways do that.

what kind of rumbling? you did put fluid in there, right?

anyway, all 2ways 'clunk.'

How do they feel.

Yea I know they clunk, but to me it was really bad. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

Yeah I put fluid in. Will it clunk more at lower speeds than higher speeds?

it normally clunks more at slow speed and tight turning like pullin into a parkin spot and flippin a u turn etc.

Yeah, one ride and a two-way and I decided never to have one for my daily...too much sacrifice, I put a 6 bolt vlsd for some additional traction, invisible. However, I don't drift the car...Street daily and some weekend racetrack time. Weaksauce I know.

From my limited experience, especially in slow manuevering turning...2 way is loud and you can feel it.

I'm curious, cuz I had WeldLocd 3 before, but now I'm on VLSD (Which I like, cuz I don't plan on going to the track too often)

I have never had a 2 way, but if there is a loud rumbling, what's the noise difference from 2 way and welded? What I mean is that, the main reason why I got rid of welded is cuz it was you can feel it at low speeds, and loud at low speeds, HOWEVER it was really good at what it does.

I didn't think that a 2 way would be loud (Like what he said)
If a 2 way is loud and stuff, what's the point of getting one? It's more worth it to save like $500+ and get a welded IMO

Did you check backlash? What break in method did you use? Did you change the fluid IMMEDIATLY after break in?

What do you mean by backlash? The LSD was installed last night, so it hasn't been broken in yet. How long does it normally take for it to break in?

As for the question about the welded, I've never driven in a car with a welded diff so I have no idea. I knew the 2-way would be loud, but I didn't think it would be this violent.

BTW this is a track car, so it doesn't bother me one bit, I just want to make sure its working properly.

My boys 2 way sounded like he had a bowling ball in his trunk that would slide from one side to the other when he turns. You get the idea...

haha thats kinda how it sounds, and it feels like I'm running over a bowling ball too cuz it hops all weird.

At low speeds i think thas how it suppose to sound... Mine feels like a welded at super low speeds <prkin lots and such> but when u gt going and kick it there is hardly any noise.

Ouch looks like your not the familiar with these. Back lash is tooth engagement, you want the engagement to be in the center. If you dont check it then you could be engaging on the edge and thats a bad thing. Thats how you break teeth.

Ummm breaking it in takes about 25mins or so of doing figure 8's.

I have a tomei and its loud with the fluid I use (valvoline 80w90 no additive, slightly louder then tomei fluid). Sometimes it feels like someone is hitting the subframe with a bat or something. Thats how it is, get used to it.

because 2ways have some slip, so if your daily driving, make a turn, or parking, basically low speed driving, the clutch plates can slip, when they slip the 2way doesnt lock and thats what the clunking noise is... there are still times it will lock on low speed daily driving and will feel similar characteristics of a welded.

for a welded its always locked, nothing slips. When you make turns your wheels will travel at different speeds but cant since its locked, to compensate for that one of your tires have to break traction and your car will sort of bounce around. The smaller radius turn the larger the effect. most of the noise is from your subframe moving all over the place as well. every action has an equal and opposite reaction...

the sounds of clutch plates slipping on a 2way is different than when you have subframe play from a welded

Couldn't have said it better myself

Thanks for the help guys. Realized part of the problem was a bad half shaft. But after breaking it in and changing the fluid, it definately is a lot better now.

can someone tell me what the backlash needs to be set to? I did a seach on here, searched google. Nothing really showed up to tell me for sure. It is a welded diff with stock case and all that. I still have all the shims and took pics of them so I would remember how they all went in...can I just install the exact same way and it will be ok? If not, what do I need to do to measure it and make sure it is right? This is my daily so cannot afford to get it wrong and mess something up. Thanks.

Just replace the shims in the same order they came in, you should be good, especially with an oem diff.

that's what I was thinking too, thanks for the confirmation.
