So I'm driving my car yesterday and rev my engine while at a stop light. I hear this wierd noise like "tink tink tink" but it only seems to happen around 3-4k rpm.
So this morning I get in the car, let it sit for about 30 seconds and rev lightly to about 3-4k rpm and sure enough I hear "tink tink tink". So I drive to work with the radio off and don't hear a sound. I pull in to the parking lot and rev the engine to 3-4k rpm, no sound. I rev higher still nothing.
The first time I heard the noise, the car had been warmed up and running for about an hour. This morning the engine was still cold, then I heard nothing after it warmed up.
It's a 98 s14 with 58k miles. Any ideas?

I was told by a mechanic that if I ever heard a clicking sound to have my timing chain looked at something about our car has a rare chain instead of a belt and it makes that sound and it is very bad if u keep driving it (if it isn’t the timing chain I cant remember what it was exactly but that we have some chain that fails about at 60k) sorry if that’s not much help I’m going off memory

i just test drove a 95 240 that had the same sound you described. it did it at 3200 rpm. i hope it's not the timing chain... cuz i'm about to buy the car!! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

check your heat shields as well.. one for the Catalytic converter, and exhaust manifold.

Yes, our car does have a timing chain rather than belt, but no, you shouldn't expect it any time you hear a clicking. The timing chain problem is mainly with the S13. Basically, Nissan threw a real flimsy little chain guide in the S13 that will eventually fail. It is a known issue, I believe there was a technical bulletin, but it was not a recall, so you'll have to pay for any work done ;-) Really, it's usually not a problem until closer to 100k+ miles, and its more of a consistent clicking throughout the RPMs (the chain is hitting the guard). Yeah, if it gets far enough out of hand, the chain can eat up your engine. Those guides just need to be replaced... unfortunately that's a lot easier said than done. Anyway, it is mainly an S13 problem. I wouldn't totally rule it out for you, but it would definately be down the line of possibilities. You've got an S14 with low miles...
