SR20DET overheats on track..solution?

Hi.

My S14 has Redtop SR20DET with KA A/C in it..

And I have SR20DET stock radiator with SR20DET fan and KA fan..

so 2 fans...

On streets, car is very fine..but on track.. after like 15 mins of driving..

it overheats fast...

So what can I do?

Just drop in Koyo aluminum rad and solved?

also, for Koyo one, should I get one for S13? or S14?

upgrade your radiator
s14/s13 koyo is nearly the same
doesnt matter. just upgrade.
make sure ur system is bled really well too

how dows that work? Both stock fans are clutch fans. Anyway, do you have a fan shroud? If not, get one. Upgrade your radiator, and you might want to think about upgrading your thermostat as well.

He's probably running an sr20 clutch fan with a ka a/c condensor fan for the ka a/c.

yea, be sure you're running the fan shroud. upgrade the t-stat while you're at it. and for ur s14? s14 koyo then.

actually i dont think you're running a shroud cuz i dont believe the ka fan will fit inside it. if this is the case, run the shroud and ditch the ka fan, it'll be fine without it.

your stock fan does nothing without a shroud. OEM fan is best for cooling.

what kind of temps are you seeing?

put some water wetter into you radiator. get an oil cooler.

Run Water Weter and purified water only, you do not need anti freeze. Infact if you are running anti freeze they shouldnt be letting you if you are on a track.

Do not bother with the Koyo aluminium radiator, the Koyo copper cools better and is 100 something dollars cheaper. You do want the s14 sr20 radiator.

Get a s14 water pump for safety. It does not cavitate at high rpms because of a different wheel design and you might just need to be replacing it anyway.

The stock clutch fan cools very well if you have the stock shroud, without the shroud it is worthless.

A z32 radiator cap will raise the pressure of your cooling system increasing your boiling point

Buy an OEM thermostat, the lower temperature thermostats are ok but you wont be utilising it while on the track. Just whatever you do though, use a OEM thermostat or a reputable aftermarket. The random ones from Autozone often work like shit. Beware lower temp thermostats if you make your cooling system really good while driving on the street.

Look up ducting for your radiator to make sure you are actually getting air going through it, you can make some very easily or purchase some.

A "swirl pot" is excellent to have and eliminates the possibility of having air in your cooling system, definitely worth it.

Almost all of these things are cheap and will make your cooling system amazing, do it! If you dont allready have an aftermarket c.temp gauge then get one, the stock one is doodoo.

here's my set-up and I have the Stock clutch fan on as well.

SPAL 16in E-Fan 2800CFM
Koyo Aluminum Radiator
1 Bottle of Water wetter
80% Distilled Water
20% Coolent
New OEM Radiator cap and thermostat

I emphasize to really bled the system carefull, I did it fast one time and I got an air bubble which pushed out coolent over time. Part an hill and run it for a while with the heater on, while adding and squezing all the radiator hoses.

Luke, one thing you want to avoid on the track is any glycol based coolant. In most racing orginsations it is illegal to have it in your system. Glycol makes cleaning up a system failure or a wreck a lot harder

The copper radiator cools better because of a lower fin count allowing more air to pass through the core. I think copper might be a better heat conductor then aluminium as well.

Luke, thanks for pointing out to run only DISTILLED water in your cooling system. The minerals that are found in basically all other waters beside distilled water will cause corrosion of your aluminium bits and pieces

Yeah the little coolent I have is Basic Prestone, u get at Pep Boyz or Autozone. I don't really track my track that open, but I haven't heard of that at any drift event.

Good point on the Radiator, the Koyo Aluminum has tons of fins they car bend easily. Thats why I made custom mounts instead of radiator zipties.

I do notice the cooling difference from the fan, the bottom of the radiator never really heats up, it's just slighly warm compared to the top
